Octavia II - Alloy Summer Wheels, Steel Winter Wheels - same bolts ?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Not sure if this has been asked before but, currently have alloys as fitted on my 2009 Octavia 1.9TDi Estate. I've priced up some steel wheels and winter tyres but am not sure whether I can use the same bolts for both. Can anyone advise ? My old Octavia Mk I had alloys nut a steel spare and that used thew same bolts, is it not the same case ?? Tyre/wheel supplier weren't sure but erred on the side of not. Can anyone hel please ??

Best regards

Roger :)

canot answer your question but would be handy to know where you are getting wheels/tyres from?

Im looking to get some for the vrs intime for winter, best i could find for 4 wheels and tyres was about £380 but they were budget tyres.

It's not impossible that you could use the same nuts as the alloys. However, you should check that the head of the nut is the correct size, and the contact face has the same chamfer angle. If there are any differences, then the load placed on either the bolt or wheel could cause failure when running.

To be safe, it is probably better to get the correct nuts for the steel wheel.

Cheers

I got steel wheels from mytyres and they use the same bolts as they have the same taper in the hole. You can always get 4 steel spares from the dealer if you're really worried, as they are by design supposed to use the same bolts.

Thanks both for the replies. @ ed209 - price below is from Mytyres.co.uk. Tyres are H speed rated and European C graded for economy and performance, so didn't think them too bad. Rougghly same price as your quote.

Steel wheels with winter tyres (LK 5 x 112.00 x 57.00)

Goodride SW608 205/55 R16 91H

Skoda OCTAVIA 1.9 TDI 1Z 1896ccm 77 kW 06.2004- £ 86.70 2 £ 173.40 icon_trash.gif plus 9.90 £ postage and packaging per complete wheel /alloy rim 2 £ 19.80 Total Amount 2 £ 193.20

My Octavia came with 17" alloys and a 16" steel spare from new. I always assumed that the same standard bolts were designed to fit both wheels and have used them successfully.

Thanks all, think that about clinches it then ! Thanks for all the help.

Unless you have upgraded the brakes, you can get 195/65R15s on the car fine. You can get Goodyear UltraGrip 8s for only £83.30 each and they are massively better than any chinese tyre. I also wouldn't just get 2 as you risk spinning the car off the road and yes, I know people who have done just that.

If you're buying winter tyres, you're buying them for safety. Don't compromise it by buying no-brand tyres and only putting them on the front. It doesn't even say these tyres have the mountain and snowflake symbol to show they have passed tests.

Try Rainworth Skoda online or via eBay.

I got 4 steelies with Hankook 'performance' winters for £460 I think - delivered, fitted & balanced. Have a look at my previous threads to confirm the price, or call Rainworth.

They were brilliant last winter.

Same bolts.

Are these any better anyone ??

Steel wheels with winter tyres (LK 5 x 112.00 x 57.00)

AVON Ice Touring ST 205/55 R16 91H

Skoda OCTAVIA 1.9 TDI 1Z 1896ccm 77 kW 06.2004- £ 97.10 4 £ 388.40 icon_trash.gif plus 9.90 £ postage and packaging per complete wheel /alloy rim 4 £ 39.60 Total Amount 4 £ 428.00

I've used Avon Ice Touring STs 205/55 R16 for the past two winters and been very impressed. This winter will be their last as they will be below 4mm by next March.

The ABS doesn't cut in much and the car actually stops normally on snow/slush.

I'd buy the Avons again.

Furthere to recent messages I've found someone selling a set of steel wheels from a VW Touran.

Two questions :-

i. Will they they fit an Octavia MkII ? the stud PCD is the same at 5 x 112, and

ii. does it make much difference that they are 15" wheels whereas my 'summer' wheels are 16" ??
