Advice/tips for tinting fog lights

Featured Replies

So i ordered some yellow film to tint my fogs and it arrived the other day

Aftet looking at the fogs properly, it looks like it mite be more difficult then expected, so I was wondering if anyone has any tips?? quite a few people have done it so it can't be that hard

Did you cut the film while it was on the fog lights??

Not likely but worth a shot, is there a template for the fog lights available so you can cut the film to the exact size??

What I was going to do was use paper, draw a circle to the exact size and cut the film

I did it on my corsa, was easy when I had the light out otherwise it will be difficult lol

I did my furby ages ago but had the fogs out to do it.

On the vRS Fabia it's a bumper off job to remove them.

At the very least take off the fog surrounds.

The best stuff to use is genuine lamin x.

Get a spray bottle with some water and a couple of drips of washing up

liquid. Spray both the sticky side of the film and what you are sticking it to.

If you do it dry and make a mistake you'll have a job repositioning the film.

Get a proper vinyl squeegee from ebay if it didn't come with one, it's easier

to apply and smooth with one of them. Once you are happy with the position

start and squeegee out the water from the centre outwards. Once you have the

centre stuck well apply heat via a hairdryer as you start to go around the contours

so you can stretch the film over the curved edges. If you don't heat it you'll get

creases.

Take your time and you'll be fine.

I have this look on my Audi as well but the fogs on that come out without bumper

removal so it's easier.

Just take the fog surround out, then apply vinyl then cut round it afterwards.

I started the trend around here for tinting headlights and tail lights lol

Doesn't my plan of using paper to draw around and create a template sound any good??

Surely it would be pretty straight forward, after a few tries and getting the exact size cut (have plenty of film to try it a few times, so not worried about wasting it or not having enough)

I hardly ever need to actually use my fog lights so the yellow film is more of a visual mod, I think it looks good on silver and black Fabia's

Nver use my fogs, vinyl is flexible with heat where as paper isnt. I measured the diameter of the fog then +2cm all the way round on the vinyl, was easier to work and gave me some room for error before trimming. Theres like a small lip for you to trim againt :)

I did my fogs yellow and my rear lights a good year before you joined and I wasn't the first.

Member dxg did the yellow fog thing before me, I think I was maybe the 2nd

person to do it, I was gutted to find out cos I thought I was the first at the time. :(

The trend at the time then was doing them in dark lamin x.

Which was what I did my taillights in before I did the fogs.

So I thought I was being well clever doing them in yellow.

Mine were done in black fly eyes before I went yellow and when I sold the

car it had yellow lamin x with black flyeyes over the top of that, and with

yellow bulbs, that combo may have been a first.... :p.

It's pretty hard to do something original on these cars nowadays,

apart from a few people like Korban who still find new stuff to do, more

or less everythings been done in the nearly 10 years these cars have been about.

It's not the neatest job in the world as I'm impatient and done mine in about 10 mins in the dark but this is what i done with cheap ebay yellow film.

1) cut a very rough square to size

2) pull plastic fog surround off

3) stuck film very roughly onto bulb

4) turned fogs on which heated the film up slightly which allowed me to smooth the film out/ get out wrinkles etc.

5) cut roughly around film leaving excess which is stuck down around the plastic of fog light holder

6) pushed plastic surround back and job done.

The whole process took me about 5 mins a side, which isn't the most perfect job but im more than happy with results. Next sunny day i have off, im going to re do the above process but spend a bit longer making sure there are no small creases etc. (unless you actually get down and look even mine still look perfect)

Remove surrounds

Clean light

spray light with soapy water

Stick on film

Hairdryer to soften tint and pull to shape

cut excess off

press out bubbles, soapy water will assist here.

refit covers.

Should be 20 mins max imo.

This is exactly what I did. Take off the fog surround and make a paper template and place this on the lamin-x and draw around then cut.

For ease of application, follow grrr666's advice. I've done the same

Did you go for lamin x? I want some too but not sure whether to buy genuine lamin x or some off eBay.

Genuine is better as small bubbles come out by themselves over

time as the vinyl has some breathable properties.

The smallest size piece they do ought to be enough for 2 fogs.

I went for the cheap stuff off eBay, only cost me £1.45 in total with free shipping, looks like they've put the price up a tiny bit since then

here's the link - http://www.ebay.co.u...ar=420094525740

took a while to arrive but i was in no rush, so that didn't bother me

it wasn't difficult to apply, even for someone like me who had never done it before

the hardest part was cutting around it after i had on the fog light perfectly with no bubbles or creases

i messed it up and cut a bit too much the first time, the second time i was stretching it while it was warm and managed to stretch it a bit too much which left a hole in it, third try and it was perfect

i didn't use a hairdryer or heat gun, just switched my fog lights on and they warmed up within 2-3 minutes which was warm enough to stretch the film

i didn't remove the fog lights as some people have done and i didn't even remove the fog surround, mite be easier if you do remove the surround though.
