Passenger side rear wheel red hot

Featured Replies

Got home today smelt that unnerving smell of pad/disc, sniff around and could hear my passenger side rear clicking like a cooling down noise felt the wheel and it was very hot, I then touched the disc and it was insanely hot (bad idea as I now don't have a finger print)

I have the a3 springs in, but when I release the hand brake it still sticks any ideas? They were new discs and pads too off when I bought the car 2 month ago :(

Most likely going to be a sticking piston in the calliper.

Usually caused by dirt and or corrosion of the piston.

They might have changed pads and discs but it sounds like they didn't clean the piston before pushing it back, thus forcing dirt between that and the seal.

Darn it! Might see if its still under warranty from them, if not is it a simple enough job?

I would try the warranty first.

I you get no joy then its not too difficult if you're reasonably confident.

If not then you could ask someone on here, who's local, if they can give you a hand.

I'm sure they would for a pint or two.

Just chewed and it is still in warranty, says up to £100 for brake system but they don't pay for facings (discs pads I assume) due to seized calipers, il give them a go and see what happens, cheers mate :)

Chewed!? Checked*

Could it be over tight hand brake??

I had this after skoda service dept decided to adjust my hand brake for me at service! First time I set off from garage it nearly sun on a roundabout it was that tight!!!

Took it back slackened off and was still red hot when I got home!!

Change of main dealer garage me thinks this year!!!

I have the exact same issue on a front caliper. Decided to get the complete octavia vrs setup

How much you looking at?

How much you looking at?

I'm not sure if this is what you are asking about, but I replaced a rear calliper on my B5 Passat and it cost about £80 from ECP as they sell callipers refurbished by Pagid - just in case you can not free that one up.

I'm guessing a seized slider might also be at fault here.

I got all four octavia vrs calipers and carriers for £180.

Rebuild kits roughly £40 (for all four)

Sandblast and powder coat all four around £60

Just a little project as i was board

Well I took it to evanshalshaw cramlington where I bought the car as its still under warranty...left the car there and went back to work.

Thy rang me at 4.30 saying they had fixed the problem and blamed it on a dirty piston and the pad not sitting right...took handbrake off and it looked promising, got it home got out and walked around the car feeling the wheels for heat:

Front 2 little to know noticeable heat

Rear driver side was warm

Rear passenger was ticking could feel the heat and the wheel was red hot :(

Il hae to ring them again tomorrow but its a nightmare keep taking it to Cramlington when I live right next to the Sunderland one!

Apologies for the spelling, 12 hour shift and the stress of this I'm nackered haha

Stuff like this really annoys me.

Its very easy for a garage to see if your calipers are not working properly, ask them if you can take it to the garage near you?

Yeah that's what I'm going to ask tomorrow, going to cost me new pads and a disc by the looks of things :/ I'm wanting it all perfect with a cruise control retrofit in time for bugjam next month!

You might get lucky and the disks be fine, if its under warranty and the faulty part has caused damage to the disks and pads they should cover it! if the brakes getting that hot they should be looking to change the brake fluid as well!

And they should be checking for a warped disc to go with it.

Is the warranty provided by the cramlington dealer as a stand alone 2nd hand vehicle warranty through a third party?

If so, you should be able to take the car to any skoda dealer. They recover the costs from the warranty company.

Rang Cramlington and asked if I can take it to Sunderland, reply: no.

Rang Sunderland any way, reply: yes ofcourse sir, I don't know why they have given you that information.

Took it there, and it was smoking from the brake! Anyhow they rang me back at lunch time an said the rear calipers were burnt out almost along with the discs and pads an that brake fluid was boiled...

So Cramlington rang me up begin forgiveness, said they were picking my car up from Sunderland and fitting new rear brakes an giving me a courtesy car...an Agila, better than nothing though!

Fingers crossed ey!

Had the same thing with the Polo 9N we had, nothing except changing the calipers fixed it. Quite scary considering the car had a daily motorway commute (until we noticed it).

There collecting it from the Sunderland branch where's its been all day...I didn't take not of it :( doh

Result!

when you pick it up, ask them to specify exactly what they've done and to see the old parts.

Drive a short way and then check whether the brake is still getting hotter.

Fingers crossed eh?
