Air Con has suddenly stopped working - Need help trying to find cause.

Chris it seems that i'm in the same boat as you! pressure is ok, changed the pressure switch too and still no joy  :@

Mine has been like this for a while now and getting rather annoying, specially with the current weather!

Is there an easy way to check the compressor and or condenser?

Condenser can only be checked by gassing with the oil and UV dye in it, then by shining a UV torch and glasses (CSI style) to see if its leaking. Normally any air con specialist worth their salt could tell it from the pressure gauges on the gassing machine.

Compressor should be able to be checked using VCDS...

Any air con specialist that uses R134a and UV dye to locate a present leak is now breaking the law. It may be added to a system on build or service to aid diagnosis of any future problems. If you have a suspected leak the system should be filled with oxygen free nitrogen and then use a sniffer or bubble spray to locate the leak.

Yep, he uses nitrogen if he suspects a leak - I did say 'gas' not 'refrigerant' in my post. Can't see how the UV dye is an issue when its pumped in with the Nitrogen?

How is the uv dye going to get around the system?

By magic, though I'd bet the compressor would just "love" getting to work on some OFN - not!

Evap Sensor? Though I think that throws up an error code.

I had a 1.4 Fabia with the wrong ECU coding (therefore saying A/C wasn't installed), though I'm not sure why this would happen but that is what happened to mine. Won't show up any fault codes either, changed the coding to the right coding and voila.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I have the new compressor (nice new Denso one) & have checked the black plastic clutch thing on the side of the pulley wheel. On the compressor fitted to the car (suspected broken) the plastic can be turned quite freely by hand with the engine off. The new on it solid & only turns with the pulley wheel.

Therefore, it looks like the compressor on the car has seized & broken the safety clutch plate.

New compressor is being fitted a week on Saturday - just in time for the British heat wave to finish & the cold weather to kick in!!

I know my car isn't a fabia (celica) but I've had air con problems and mine was due to a faulty compressor. Mine is a magnetic clutch relay type though so when you press the button the clutch engages and drives the compressor (mine tried I engage but was burning the belt out lol) to check if the compressor is seized I took the pipes off ( and reclaimed the gas of course lol) and manually turn the compressor and see if you can hear it sucking or blowing through the pipe holes.

Another thing to note is that with mine it won't engage the compressor if it detects the gas is low.

If I was you id re- type that post mate, illegal to discharge the gas into the atmosphere with a £1000 fine iirc

Cheers bud

On a side note then, how can halfords sell a re charge kit when surely if you know you have a leak on the system how can you be allowed to re charge it? Just curious that's all lol

Just had a look through this one as I'm having similar issues with mine, although the way it failed, it was temperamental and now it's actually completely failed. What I'm wondering from looking at this is how long the gas usually lasts? I had it gassed in September last year, so surely it can't have gone by now?

Sometimes I found that putting it from hot to cold a few times sorted it - that no longer sorts it, when I start it and put the air con on, it last worked about three weeks ago no, since then pressing the button doesn't make any noises or have any effect whatsoever. I'm very much so at a loss with this one :(
