Brake squealing?

Featured Replies

Greetings again guys, over the past few days driving about ive noticed a rather high pitch sqealing noise coming from what sounds to be my brakes, its everytime i put my brakes on, only when gently applied though, if i apply them heavily the squeal dissapears.

So, as a matter of precaution i popped the furby on the drive and jacked it up to check over a few things, as soon as i jacked it up i noticed that the wheels on the front (both sides) do not turn freely (cannot spin them like a wheel of fortune lol), could this be siezed calipers? the pads dont look particularly worn, and the surface of the discs look nice and even surface. any ideas? :)

cheers again.

Maybe worth finding a quiet road and do some hard braking & more than you might already be doing,

and get any build up off the pads, and see if it helps any.

It maybe is sticky Calipers, so you will need to check these or have them checked for you,

& serviced, they need to get thrown back ok.

I would suggest that the pads are taken out and a little Copper Grease applied to the back of the pads.

How many miles on the car, and what servicing has it had done?

Do you get any surface corrosion showing on the discs over night or with a couple of days of inactivity.?

hmm i was thinking sticky calipers, lukily my old man is a ex mechanic (all be it for ford, but principle is the same).

Dont have the service history to hand, but its had 1 owner, which was lancashire fire service so it has been looked after :) .

no surface corrosion as far as i can see. had the wheels off the other day before i set out for work.

Its 40k miles on a (58'), MOT just been done last month.

I did consider doing some hard braking so see if it loosened them up a little, though one thing i did notice was, the noise dissapears for a little while after washing the car?

May be a silly question, but does it go away when the road's wet?

If so, then I'm pretty sure it's basically either dry backplates or the individual friction compound you've got on.

very good point, havent thought to try that yet, better get raindancing though, its sunny all week here apparantly lol!

although surely if that was the case my wheels would turn freely when jacked up, it seems like the brakes are always ever-so-slightly on, enough to stop the wheels turning freely?
