Gearbox oil - when to change

Featured Replies

There are numerous threads on here about which gearbox oil to buy but I can't find anything about when to change it !

It is a case of only change it once you start to have some issues, or is there a recommended mileage interval -

thanks

Its in theory fill for life.

For normal use I would change it every 5 years of 50k

Use nothing other than oil from the dealer.

Trust me on that!!! Never use anything other than from the dealer.

I'd leave it alone, except perhaps to check the level.

Remember, gearbox oil sees none of the contamination that engine oil does. If you do decide to change it, you'll be amazed at how clean and new the 'old' stuff looks when it comes out.

Our Fabia is on about 115k miles, and it hadn't even occurred to me to change the box oil, and I'm always tinkering with stuff. Waste of time and money IMHO.

Gearbox oil still wears and most manufacturers give intervals for gearbox/diffs.

There was a technical video that Spoon did and they were saying for track use you should change the gearbox oil even more than engine oil.

Track use is of course different to somebody plodding about on the road, but over time the effect is still the same.

My first-hand experience of gearbox oil in the fabia (it had done 55k) was a slight crunch from 1st to 2nd in cold weather until it all warmed up.

New gearbox oil – now perfect

That’s a case of the oil not having the same properties as new.

A visual inspection of old gearbox oil is in no way a representation of its quality.

Rubbish

The stuff that comes out is black!!

Gearbox oil is shot by 100k, skoda say lifetime but a lifetime to skoda is the 3 year warranty period!

If your anywhere near 100k i would change it for sure!

yeah, pesonally i'd change it every 40-50k

except for all the swarf and some of that is stuck on the magnet inside ---- in newer cars I like to change mine @16-20 thou and baring leaks forget it

Oil still degrades though doesnt it?

Ive changed a couple of box fluids

Lupo gti 100k (black as anything and gear changed were notchy - new fluid hey presto like a new box)

Berlingo 1.9d work van 134k (gear change was a joke! No side to side movement and literally req 2 hands to change gear - new fluid and yet again hey presto took a few hundred miles to loosen off but its brand new again)

Fabia vrs 70k (notchy change old fluid was black - new stuff and job complete)

Really need to do my leon im on 108k and its not as smooth as it could be! I guarantee a fluid change will sort it!

OK, well maybe Skoda gearboxes or oils aren't comparable with old VW ones, but when I changed out the oil on my Mk2 Golf a few years back at about 150k, it came out looking perfectly clear, and replacing it made precisely no difference to the gearchange (which wasn't a problem).I changed it, 'cos like the OP, I thought it 'should' be done. No interval specified for that car either AFAIK.

I'll check the colour of the Fab's oil sometime, doubt it will be black, but I'll let y'all know either way.

Mine came out black full of bronze specks, good stuff, refill it and ignore the whine!

Until my spare box with LSD is fitted

It will be rotten trust me

That old golf may have had a recent change. Unless you know the exact history you have no way to disproove that

I changed the oil on my old octy at about 80k, it made a noticeable difference to the gear change. Get the proper vag oil though.

I used redline, expensive but top quality stuff. I've used it in other cars i own and it always lasts and gives a smooth shift.

My box was a little notchy.

This thread has made me want to do mine. How much do you need?

2.4lts, vw stuff is about £26 per litre.

I 've just paid just over £20 for 2 litres and 1.5 coolant ---@ Skoda dealer

Strangely cheap, sure it's the right stuff lol?

£26/L

I'll leave it for now! :)

Its not £26 at all, its about £10

There are two types and one is wrong for this country yet they still sell it and show it on the system.

If its the one for thats used for the DSG boxes as well then its wrong, its too thin.

If you search for my name and posts about it I once listed them both and the correct part number.

Right,

went back through your posts Fred

Skoda UK confirm that part number is usable in the car.

There are two oils...

G052157A2

Which is super expansive and apparnetly the "high performance verison".

G060726A2

Which is not as expensive and the traditional stuff.

I've just used the new stuff and its crp.

So to anybody who wants the proper gearbox oil go for G060726A2 and dont let the dealer tell you otherwise.

Gl-4 specified I read old thread saying about 75w90 recomend but 75w80 is a bit nicer from what I read of most the posts I’ve just changed mine out with GL-4 75w80 once warmed up

slightly its a lot better now but I’d agree most time should come out clean but at same time that doesn’t mean the oil is still viscous enough suppose it’s down to how much **** you give it mine is just over 120k so thought it couldn’t do any harm I’d rather play it safe as got no history

It really wasn't. I'd forgotten this thread, but 15 months ago I changed the clutch on the Fabia.  I changed the gear oil then, and it was very nearly the same colour and consistency as the new stuff that replaced it. No difference to gearchange afterwards, but aside from the clutch slipping, there was no problem anyway.
