Thats what ive found, the gauge is way off whats actually in the tank....

Exactly.  How simple does it have to be?

When we're talking about fuel consumption (as distinct from range, which is a totally different discussion) then mpg is the only thing which matters.

I am beginning to supect that some people waste their time burbling on about "miles per tankful" in a discussion about fuel consumption in order to cover up the fact that they are incapable of simpe arithmetic.

If (as is clear from posts earlier in this thread) there isn't even any consistency about how many litres there are per tankful then - if discussing fuel consumption - quoting miles per tankful is an utter waste of everyone's time.

If people can't be bothered to note, whenever they fill up, how many litres they put in as well as the mileage, why are they bothering to post in threads about fuel consumption?  If you don't care, fair enough, don't post.  If you do care, then measure it.  Simples.

Correct me if I am wrong but the OP's question is about Octavia 3 fuel tank size?

What the question that the OP further then asked was when filling up after the fuel light came on he/she only got 41 litres or so in it.

What someone could usefully tell us who has access to a copy of the Octy 3 manual which, if similar to other Skoda manuals, will mention how many litres are left when the fuel light comes on.

The Octy 2 is 9 litres ie about 2 gallon in old money and I think the Fabia 2 is about 7 litre ie about a gallon and a half in old money.

If the Octy 3 has a nine litre warning then 50 litres is spot on, if something else it is a bit off.

So to reiterate the OP's question is about fuel tank size not fuel consumption although one topic is related to the other via the issue of range which is a very important issue for some of us and we do like to vent off about this as fuel tank size affects range which is a pain on many Skoda's as Fuel tanks size X Consumption = Range.

Not Complex ie Simples.

According to the manual its 'approx 7 litres'.

I've ran mine to the bottom of the red with only 10miles range showing and could only get 44litres into it.

That is spooky and makes it sound about the same size as a Fabia 2 tank, which I can vent and actually get close to 50 litres, hmmm.

I am thinking that the fuel gauge sensor is a sensitive pressure transducer that I am presuming can be either calibrated via the VCD or should be changed as being 5 litres out is unacceptable in my opinion.  Even for a Octy 3 TSI VRS should a litre should take you about 10 miles on average on cruising roads.

Compared to other VAG cars (A3, A4, Passat) the Octy fuel gauge runs down very evenly and consistently but does underestimate fuel capacity left when the needle is hitting empty.

I arrived at this forum as I too am confused by the range of my new Octavia, was perplexed when filled up for 1st time at the weekend and only got about 40L in, so checked manual, says 50L (not huge to start with compared with my previous cars 70.1L Passat & 61L A4 Avant(same size car) but can I even get the stated 50L in? I will need to fill up again tomorrow so am monitoring this closely and will see how much I can squeeze in, but this does worry me, and before some smart ar$e goes on about how to calculate range, please see the topic title. The reason I am concerned is I hate petrol stations, and tend to fill then empty so I go maybe once a week/every 600+miles or so. Now I am worried that I will be going twice a week, it doesn't take 5 minutes to fill up - it takes planning for the journey I do/ I want to avoid certain high price/motorway forecourts & shopping queues etc. I regularly drove to south of france on 1 tank in my previous cars (fully loaded & dicing with speed cameras all the way), looks like I will be making more stops from now on.

Would anyone dare to try to actually run the car dry and see how much fuel they can cramp into the tank (please do not do this in a diesel). Take a spare fuel tank with 10L so you can reach a gas station.

Well, that's how I got mine from the dealership, running on fumes (even though they said they've put more in than usual, since I asked!). 50,64 liters went in at the fill-up.

I tried this actually, after 680 kilometers (I am dutch) my range said 0 km.

According to my fuel consumption and the fact that the tank holds 50 liters, I figured I could manage 850 km.

So I kept on driving untill I reached 810 km en then I could fill my tank with 49,5 liters no problem.

On the dutch forum we found out it only seems to happen to diesel cars (all diesels even VRs).

Good job you drove, walking would have been painful with balls that big !

Way to go.

Apologies for being late to the thread, but having come from a (diesel) car which had a 65 litre/14 gallon tank and was re-filled at about 750 miles, average of 58 mpg , I find myself watching the Octavia's gauge spin round in comparison and visiting Costco more often.

50 litres is under 11 gallons so I suppose  around 550 miles is the expected range at 50-55mpg.
