indicated 140 - how fast really?

Featured Replies

Took the Octy onto a "private road" on the Oxfordshire / Warwickshire border last night and clocked an indicated 140mph.

What is the actual speed likely to be?

130-ish i estimate

It was always 10% less in VWs (assuming standard tyre setup). From m experience so far, my Fabia seems to be about that too.

The fabia vRS is GPS'd at 135mph when the speedo registers 140

Thinking about it I can calculate it from the RPM and gear ratios........ time to dig out those uni books

some time later..........

Based on 5500rpm its 133.65 mph

Know what you're trying to do but you would still get an error....as I believe the tacho is not entirely accurate...or something like that.

We had a thread about this some time ago....I asked the same thing as you've done.

Yep, I found that thread in a search. Was hoping someone had done an indicated 140 in a GPS equipped vehicle.

Still, a calculated 133mph seems to tie in reasonably well with what people suggest above.

You also have a nice "Private Road" that runs downhill from Finmere market towards Buckingham......................................LOL

Ah but that one has a nasty bridge just around a corner where Mr Plod sits frequently ;) Incidentally that stretch of road holds claim to being where the fastest ever person caught speeding in the UK was caught.

Not including policemen on the M54 :)

Had mine off the clock once

Has anyone ever had an accurate speedo fitted in their car?!

Seems like one of the most important parts of the car in this day and age(gatsotime) is the speedo. Why do makers fail to make an accurate one.

Mind you,if your actual speed is way under what the car reckons you should be ok

I'm just a bit disappointed for myself reading this thread :( Looks like I wasn't going as fast as I thought .pah! :)

Had an indicated 160MPH on mine in germany on the A1 Bonn - Koln autobahn. Tomtom GPS was reading 149MPH and still accellarating. I would have been able to go faster but I had to slow down for traffic, I still had around 500rpm before I hit the rev limiter in 5th.

Im fairly confident mine is about 5% fast. The Milometer was exactly 5% out on some very long stages on the Cannonball which had been acurately pre measured so I guess the speedo is calibrated the same.

With a GPS remember it reads your speed horizontally as that is how the satelite sees you travel therefore if you are going down a steep hill at high speeed on the GPs you are actually going FASTER !!!!! than the GPS reading :thumbup:

If there are any techies here can they work out what a 4x4 will be doing at 7200 in top as its off the clock & in the mileometer window, I know its 7200 because thats the limiter setting

was on a private road t'other day, probably the same one goochie ;)

indicated 145 was 139 on the gps

is the standard 4x4 limited at 6500? or do i need more power?

i thought you had a huge fecking turbo on urs bengie why you need more power

My Octy is out by 5mph at an indicated 80mph, GPS reads 75mph.

At an indictated 140mph I would expect actual speed to be a touch over 130mph.

Most manufacturers set their speedo's to over read. It is illegal for them to under read in some countries and also leaves the manufacturers open to law suites from motorists who have been convicted of speeding. The rolling diameter of an underinflated worn tyre is different from that of a same size over inflated new tyre so manufactures will calibrate speedo's to take account of the worse situation. This means they all tend to over read a bit in normal circumstances.

I thought Jason had bagsied that for his "hybrid"

Next time you have your car on the dyno, get them to do a speed check. I had it done on my Impreza and it was actually very very accurate (it had a KPH-MPH converter on it which made that even more impressive) somewhere in the region of +/- 2-3 mph at 30-120. Worthwhile to get it done then you have some element of confidence in your speedo (or not of course!)

Not sure what the std 4x4 limiter is set to. When the car is mapped the limiter can be raised. You will know if you are hitting it by the sound the Engine is making, its a sort of mechanical version of PLEASE DONT DO THIS ITS HURTING

I see.Do get a bit frustated with manufacturers figures generally though.I know everything is a 'claimed' figure but....

People are saying the 130 bhp furby runs at more than that without being touched.Does the same apply to the octavia vRS? Have I really got more like 190 bhp?

Sometimes it feels morelike 100 bhp, other days it flippin flies. Those must be the 190 bhp days :)

Same for the 0-60.I know its not important realistically but it still sells cars to people. It seems well known the fabia will clock it in 8.5 or less (in the 7's) without tweaking.I know this partly relates to insurance groupings by the manufacturer claiming a dawdling 9.5 or something but Insurers aren't exactly stupid and if they could crank it up a group they would

The Octavias figures too.Is it more like 0-60 (mph) in 7 not 7.9? (I know thats to 62 mph/100kph)

It all seems a bit of a joke really.None of the manufacturers details seem accurate and it seems impossible for them to be accurate.Couple that with speedos that have to be over reading and its mad.

Perhaps somebody independant should provide figures for the cars, not the makers ( I just need reassuring that my car is a 146 mph monster even if I have to do 156 on the clock down the autobahn to reach that claimed speed!!)

Should have included this in your for sale section. Maybe tempt someone even more.
