tyres

Featured Replies

I had my MOT today, was keeping fingers crossed it would pass as I am off camping to the IOW next week, so I get a call from my mechanic, its failed (my front tyres were pretty close to the wear indicators anyway) then he said it passed as he swapped the spare with one of the fronts and had them redo it  (did not know that was possible)

Result.

Only now I need 5 new tyres!

Only thing is I have my heart set on a campervan -possibly to buy in winter when they should be cheaper, so unsure if to fit some cheapos or decent ones, as I would have to sell my estate vRS to fund it.

Are there any good offers about, these 18" ones 225/50/18 are quite pricey.

You get what you pay for with tyres, in my opinion.

Tyres are quite pricey for the vRS but you could have a look at this site for opinions and reviews:

I've got Goodyear F1 Assymetric 2s on currently and they are fantastic and I've heard good things about Michelin Pilot Sport 3s but both are expensive. Falken tyres seem to be OK and Uniroyal Rainsport 2s are highly rated by some. If you search the web, you'll find that many of the 'top-line' brands have cheaper sub-brands which may be worth looking into (e.g. Goodyear own Dunlop and Fulda, Continental own Barum and Uniroyal).

I'm with bigman on tyres and always fit Eagle F1 Assy 2's, but if you want to stick some cheap ones on, my bro has a Leon Cupra which had Runway tyres on it when he got it (same size as the vRS). They were reasonable tyres and the gripped pretty well. Perhaps not up to the same standard as more expensive stuff, but not ditch finders either.

Due to the excellent performance and wear rate I'm currently favouring the Continental tyres.

I replaced 2 of the SC2's I got on my car with SC5's after 30k miles. I'll be around 40k miles before I need 2 more - and I'll be getting 2 more SC5's.

I've got Conti 5 on mine and really like them. Why put really cheap tyres on any car let alone a performance model like a vrs - they are the only thing that keeps you on the road. Have to laugh when you see cars that have been lowered etc to make them handle better and then they fit cheap tyres...good tyres will make the biggest difference over any other mod possible.

Wise words

Re offers just trawl the net, put   "cheap tyres online uk" into Google & see what comes up.

many times I have done this & then got a local dealer to price match

Another vote for SC5's, but they are in the same price bracket as F1's.

IMHO tyres are the one thing you shouldn't ever skimp on. look at http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/

We all have our personal faves (since we spent money on them) but putting £40 remolds on a car with torque is not a great idea.

I'm an http://www.goodyear.eu/uk_en/tires/passenger/vector-4seasons/ convert. In 8k miles no wear to speak of and christ - the grip is good, and predictable.

For those 4 weeks a year with snow... you can drive around like a boss. The 25 weeks when it's cold and damp - sorted. The other 23 weeks it will be wet... or perfect race conditions. You wanna race?

Got 4 new falken 452s on my vrs and they are ok but a little noisy

I'm running winter tyres on mine. It's made driving in any weather possible and for when its hot (4weeks out of the year....) its just common sense to know you haven't got full grip.

This is a daily car and I'd never go back.

I do have a bit of weekend fun in the garage and yeah it's on a summer tyre but I only use that in perfect dry conditions anyway .

At this time of the year even premium tyres will be give away prices so manufacturers can dump old stock. Grab a bargain !

My Vrs is now 14 months old and the Contisport 2 have done 29500 miles so far but will be due a change in the next couple of months. While having a puncture fixed this week I was chatting to the owner of the company I used and asked about cheap tyres. He was very much of the opinion that "you get what you pay for" especially in wear rates and performance. Hence I will be replacing mine with Contisport 5.

+1 for the Goodyear 4 seasons I was so impressed with them on the Scout I've put a set on the SLK.

Hankook Evo Ventus2, decent midprice tyre.

How do you guys find the Vector 4Seasons for road noise? - a few of the reviews say they're a bit noisy.

I like the thought of the good year-round grip, but the Octavia is already known to suffer from road noise.  I wouldn't really want to make it worse..

I have just fitted 225/40/18 Falken ZE 914's after reading good reviews on tyrereview.com, they cost me £68.35 a corner or £285.24 in total with delivery from AllNewTyresc.com, only been on the car two weeks and I like them!

Just fitted a pair of Goodyear Efficient grip performance tyres to reparable a couple of sawtoothed Maxxis MAV1.

Goodyear are massively quieter than the previous tyres but they still don't make the VRS a quiet place on a rough road. £120 a corner, the dearest tyres I've ever bought.

The Maxxis I thought were good value for money and had loads of grip in all weathers but they were damned noisy and the back of the car wore them to a 50p shape. Been aligned since but the change was minimal.
