Brakes graunching

Featured Replies

Got a call from the wife yesterday (I was miles away at the time unfortunately) to say the car had broken down and she thought it was the brakes. She said they made a horrible noise when she applied the brakes and it continued after she released the pedal. She was going to phone the AA to get them to pick the car up at midnight from work (B&Q wouldn't let her go early and make the time up). I persuaded her that she could drive the car home carefully which is what she did.

This morning I gave it a run before I went to work and hey presto, no noise. Any ideas before I take the wheels off tonight?

Maybe just a stuck stone off the road or something.

I know that helps very little.... But if you cant find anything use that as an excuse.

My immediate though was ABS. I'm sure someone with alot more knowledge than me will come along and help :)

How would the ABS do that? Not saying you're wrong, just can't see why. Unless the sensor came loose and hit the splined thingummy and has now worn away. No warning lights on though. Does the basic 1.4 mpi 8V car even have ABS?

Take both wheels off to have a look at the actually brakes and pads before you start thinking deeper, then go from there.

Something similar happened to me the year I got the car, one morning they was screeching so loud I was forced to gear down as much as possible and apply the handbrake to stop, turned out the clown who had the car before didn't bleed the brakes and one side was warn to the metal and the other was fine. Not saying that's what it is though.

I'm going to do that this evening.

Well, all wheels off and nothing obviously untoward. Front wheels could spin a little easier but I'll sort that at the weekend. I drove the car a couple of mikes and no repetition of the problem. Mind you it seemed ok this morning and then it went wrong later. Could it be a heat thing?

As a matter of interest where is the gearbox oil drain plug and the filler plug too? I've sent SWMBO out to find a Hayes BoL but Halfords may be shut by the time she gets there.

any luck with this? my discs wont spin much either when turned, think that along with a build up of crap on them is causing the vents to block and heat to build up
