Vrs TDI black line fuel economy

Featured Replies

My CR170 was averaging 47mpg actual doing mainly single/dual carriageway on a 60mile round trip daily. Just hit 20K miles this week (suspect its finally loosened up) and after the service I decided to drive it with economy in mind as an experiment and returning 58mpg over the last 482 miles with still 140 odd left in the tank according to MFD.

Now up 50 the 5k miles mark - average overall is 51mpg. I get 55-58mpg trundling to and from work on A roads - a boring max 60mph 20 mile journey - during which I exercise the usual hypermiling techiques.  On a faster run (fully laden to Cornwall - ate some miles) - got 48mpg.  Happy overall with the consumption - tho I do not use the power in town through the gears etc - leave that for the open road where it is so much more satisfying.

Test drove a fl vrs diesel dsg today on b roads and motorway averaged 43mpg wernt that impressed

that's very good for an automatic, only 2mpg less than a manual!

from this thread it looks like diesels are averaging about 10 mpg more that petrols which is exactly what the manufacturers specifications suggest.. I'm not sure what people expect but I'm more than happy with my mpg!

My old mk1 tdi used to give me 65 mpg regularly, my mk 2 2.0pd will just about manage to give me 60 on a run if I coax it like a grandad. It seems to me that with all the focus on lower emissions, the actual economy suffers. Surely this means that more fuel is being burned for the same distance travelled, and ultimately more pollution. Not complaining, just wondering.

My CR Vrs estate has just had its 30k miles service at 14 months old and for the last 5k miles I have used an app to calculate fuel economy. It says that my best tank gave me 53.34 mpg and the worst was 45.79 mpg, which is down to the mix of driving changing from mostly motorway to more town. My climate control is on most of the time and the average over that time is 47.96 MPG

I had a petrol Vrs estate for 12 months previous to getting the diesel and on the same use I averaged 36 mpg on Vpower.

To be fair, if you buy a good diesel for a lower price or equivalent to a petrol you can't go wrong. 10mpg doesn't sound much but it soon adds up, not to mention the cheaper tax etc. The diesel

also will retain 40~mpg when blasting round town and the back roads. Any petrol owner is lying if they believe they get much more than 25-30 on a blast. As for motorway runs, petrol cars have always been ~10 mpg of a diesel.

I'm used to 30-35 out of my old petrol so 50+ is a revelation.

The thing was i never really hammered it and majority of it was 70 on the m5 so was expecting at least high 40s although i do recall the aircon being on so that would drop it a few mpg

Yeah I agree at normal speeds the petrol is fairly efficient but if you drive it really quickly thats when the gap between petrol and diesel increases. Thing is equivalent diesel models are usually a good bit dearer to buy. When I bought my tsi second hand I would have had to pay about 2k more for the equivalent diesel. I intend keeping mine for at least 5 years by which time it will probably have done 130k miles so doubt the gap in resale between diesel and petrol will be that huge by that time. Also factored in fair chance the dmf would have to be replaced at some point in the diesel and difference in road tax ain't that much either.
