spare wheel

Featured Replies

Regarding the pressures for Get-You-Home space-saver spare wheels.   In addition to asking on this Forum, I had also played a Wild Card, and had asked Skoda themselves - regarding the Greentech that we had bought for ourselves in June, & also about a SE that we had bought for a member of our family, just earlier this month.

The DEFINITIVE answer from the Skoda technicians, was that the SS spare should be inflated to the highest pressure of any of the road wheels on the car.    My assessment is that the "50 mph" rating quoted for the Greentech models, is no more than an ultra- safety issue, because if the SS was actually used, then the vehicle would be running on 3 x Alloys & 1 x steel wheel - something NOT to be recommended.           The spare for the SE is actually identical IN ALL RESPECTS to the other wheels on the car, & there are no cautionary stipulations added - it's just a spare, as in the old fashioned meaning of the word.

So, there we go then...............and en passant, so to speak, & in view of some of the less-than-complimentary remarks about Skoda's interest & help, I have had occasion to direct a few questions/problems in respect of both cars, and EACH TIME, Skoda's response had been extremely fast (almost immediate, in fact) extremely helpful, courteous & eager-to-help.                As regards Customer Service, can't fault Skoda whatsoever, so there you go then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don't know if it's 100% relevant to your original enquiry but my Citigo Elegance was ordered with the Style Pack 2, 15" silver Auriga alloy wheels which also comes with a 14" steel spare wheel etc.

  • Yes, they are the same as the steel wheels that come as standard on the S and SE models.

I still cant get my head round the fact that so many cars are now sold without a spare. Its nothing more than a money making exercise for the car makers, who then charge you for a spare. As i have said b

Got lucky, bought a full sized spare, never used, off Ebay for £21.00 from a bloke who had sold his wife's car. Already got the rest of the kit, so well pleased.

How much would you want for the compressor? (SimonJ)

As I had purchased an after-sales spare for family member - at a cost of £161, I insisted that he should also have the can of sealant & the compressor which had been supplied from the factory, & they were duly (& quite happily) handed over - & I must admit that the Compressor is a very nice piece of kit.

As I had also purchased a spare for my own vehicle (£50 in my case) I tootled back to the dealer, and requested my can of S & the Compressor.    I was told that even though the vehicle had already landed in UK, the spare had been fitted (obviously factory supplied on the off chance), & therefore there was neither a can of S or a Compressor supplied with the car.    However, the dealership is looking out for one for me, as they're new, compact & shiny - and I want one.

Having read quite a few articles about "get-you-home" spare wheels - not to mention the Compressor & the tin of Gunk, it would appear that if one does use the Gunk, then you are most likely still have to finish up by buying another tyre, as tyre repair guys are not prepared to then repair the tyre. It's something to do with them having to clean off all the Gunk adhering to the inside tyre wall (an extremely time consuming job for them) not to mention that with some tins of sealant, there would appear to be health-and-safety issues if the guys then have to de-gunge the tyre.

It's a tad expensive, I know, but one should either (a)stipulate a factory-fitted spare (around £50) or if that's not an option, ( B) go for broke, & buy a wheel & tyre from the Dealer (around £150) or, possibly even, the cheaper option, source one locally.

With the 2 Citigo's (1 a pre-reg) that we've recently bought, we exercised both options 1 & 2, a bit on the pricey side, but the peace-of-mind is well worth it.

Incidentally, if one buys a SE, then, as it has all-steel wheels, the spare & tyre then supplied, is what older readers would regard as a "normal & traditional" spare.

Modern technology (& car manufacturers) sucks!

  • 4 months later...

I've a question (and I'm presuming the SEAT Mii will be the same as the Citigo).

Mum has a Mii Mango (15" alloys as standard) and came with no spare.

We're looking to sort one out, but not be bent over.

First question - will a 15" wheel and tyre fit in the spare wheel well?

If we buy a space saver - can it be fitted to the front axel?  I've heard not but can't find a definitive answer.  We don't want to have to mess about swapping wheels over from front to back etc at the side of the road.

Lastly - is there any reason why a decent 14/15" 4x100 steel from an earlier VAG car won't be suitable - let's face it there must be 1000's out there from mk2 Golfs alone!

Cheers,

Ryan

Yes, a 15" wheel and correct tyre will fit. The space saver can be fitted on the front, but you must adhere to the 50mph limit and don't go in for abrupt manoeuvres, you will have nowhere as much grip. The problem with the earlier 4x100 wheels is finding the right offset. The back is fine but I haven't been able to find one a 14" one which does not foul on full lock without spacers on the front. 15" may be more feasible but it will be trial and error.

We have a Ford Ka as a runabout that my lad drives when he is home from Uni. I upgraded the front brakes to the Sport Ka items (much better stopping power) but you are buggered if you get a front wheel puncture as the 13" spare won't fit over the brakes. So you have to put the spare on the rear and then put the one taken off the rear on the front. Which I had to do in a supermarket car park once!

Sorry, only loosely related to the topic!

Cheers Peter, most useful.

Any idea what offset we're talking about?

Space saver looks favourite really, due

to the cost, and as she doesn't do long journeys and has time to get the alloy sorted in a short time frame as she's retired (excuse the pun!)

Mtytyres sell a 14" steel wheel with the correct offset. As far as I know the Skoda spare is fitted with a 165/70R14 tyre.

Just phoned SEAT Worcester and they don't do space savers for the Mii apparently!

I've found a seat 4x100 alloy in a scrappy just down the road - it's 14" but will probably do.

The offset of the 15" rims on Mum's Mii is ET41 apparently...

Before you put a tyre on it I would put on the front of the Mii and check it on full lock. I have a nasty feeling.......

It's ET38 - but probably not as wide as the 5.5" wide 15J wheels that are on it...I'm guessing 5" wide from an earlier SEAT forget what those little ones were called - Arosa's?.

The Seat Arosa 5J 14" steels I tried needed spacers on the front to avoid the track rod ends at full lock.

Ah yes - I guess the design of the wheel is something I hadn't considered along with the ET....
