In that case: one has to look at the screen and (try to) listen.   :giggle:   I appreciate my comment was geared more towards a younger driver perhaps.

In that case you should see your Doctor and arrange a hearing test.

Every 3 years (up to 60) we have to have a medical which includes a hearing test, and my last one I had exactly that problem, and although I passed I was borderline to keep my job. Told to go and see my Doctor, which I did and she arranged a full NHS Audiology Test which showed I had "lost" the ability to hear certain tones in my left ear.

I now have a hearing aid specifically tuned to those frequencies and things are much improved.

It is like a lot of things; because the loss is gradual we don't realise how bad things are getting until it is pointed out to us.

Oh dear, how depressing! My comment was (at least) half tongue-in-cheek but now I feel quite decrepit.

That's how I felt when they told me I needed a hearing aid!!   :( :'( :whew:

The screen is useful in telling you the beeps or continual note is due to the flower border 30cm away and not the car or wall on the otherside.

I think you can change the tones and loudness

If I can just steer this thread back on track :)

Thanks to all those that have contributed and confirmed the ‘slow’ start times of the Columbus unit.  My reason for asking the question in the first place therefore seems to boil down to the initial boot time of the Columbus unit (e.g. when you get in the car for the first time that day or after it has been turned off for an hour or so). I believe the unit starts booting from the moment you unlock the car.  So depending on how long you take between unlocking and engaging reverse I guess the OPS screen may be instantaneous or slow to appear.  To those that say they do not experience any delay (in the initial boot up) are you getting into the car immediately after unlocking and do you ever see the “welcome on board” screen? I would be interested to know if some units are booting faster than others and why.

Having also researched the various VW related forums across the net it seems that the RNS510 unit (Columbus equivalent) can be quite slow to start and therefore an irritation for those that want to use their parking aids (sensors or camera) during a quick get away.

Tones and volume can also be changed with VCDS to several different levels / pitches.

Well I guess my hearing is pretty shot having seen Motorhead live a few times in the early eighties but my lugs still perform a useful purpose as they allow my glasses to stay attached to my noggin which is rather handy for driving along with other daily activities. So plenty of looks around AND checking the display on my Bolero when going backwards (sorry I know this is for the Columbus unit) is a very handy addition. No delay on the Bolero when engaging backwards and works a treat with park assist on those rare times I use it. Oh and thus far I can determine that the higher pitch beep is for the front and the lower the rear... which is nice.

I've never found a way.

You can change them (two different ones if you have PA with one speaker in front of car and one at the back) in the Maxidot. Both volume and pitch can be altered. No need for VCDS.

Having previously said I do not get a delay between starting up and the display of the parking sensor screen, I have now noticed that I do get one sometimes !

The Skoda Navigation screen comes on for several seconds before the parking Sensor screen displays.

I cannot work out when this occurs just every now and again ( 1 in 10 maybe) and it is not linked to how long the ignition has been off.

If you have a mobile phone that auto pairs with the columbus it can mute the sound for a while as it does so. Eventually the screen will show a confirmation that they are paired and you can clear it.
