recommended engine oil

Featured Replies

Little bit of assistance needed on choice of oil. Think the tappets may need doing as making the infamous ticking sound so first port of call topping up oil..

I realise the oil needs to meet the vw spec but any suggestions for decent oil at a reasonable price.. there's so many to choose from dunno where to start.

Cheers,

Alex

What car is it for , a mk1 Fabia vRS Diesel.?

Yeah 06 plate, what do you recommend?

Alex

Sorry,

only wanted to check what you were asking about.

no idea about diesels other than reading the recommended oils,

If you are topping up, it really should be with the same as you already have in.

If the engine is worn and you need some advanced oil to help hide that,

then hopefully someone with experience on Mk1's will be along,

Fabia 1 section would be good for a quick reply.

Hi Aj,

If you have the 06 it will be the 1.9PD engine. It's a great engine and as long as the correct oil is used you will never get a problem with it. However, there lies a potential problem. Some owners don't read the manual and put the wrong oil in it and this can cause problems very quickly. Do you know the cars history? Have you owned it from new? Let me explain. The PD engine is very sensitive to the oil used as the camshaft powers the fuel injectors as well as opening the valves and closing them. The valves are controlled by hydraulic tappets so if you have a ticking noise, then that may be of concern. Either one of the hydraulic tappets is on it's way out (simple to fix, it's a diy job if you want to do it), or more worryingly, the camshaft is shot. Camshafts also make a ticking noise when they are on their way out. It's very loud when it's about to go bang. IF it's the camshaft, and I cannot tell you it is as I haven't heard it, then it can be very expensive to fix. This nearly always comes about due to the wrong oil having been used. I replaced the camshaft in a 1.9pd engined Golf and it needed a new cylinder head too. The cost was enormous, and all because the owner hadn't ever read his manual and had been servicing it himself with the wrong oil. The car had covered just 30k too. Normally, these engines will cover 400,000 plus miles if cared for correctly.

So, you should always use the VW spec 505.01. You can use the spec 507 oil (this is longlife) but you don't need it as you don't run variable servicing on your PD. Make sure you always buy a fully synthetic 505.01 and not a semi. The best one to use in my honest opinion is VW's own Quantum brand. It's cheap and has all the right high pressure anti wear agents in it, and it's fully syn. It's also difficult to buy the wrong one. There are many other brands available but you must read the labels carefully as it's easy to pick up the incorrect oil and ruin your engine. And when I say ruin the engine, I mean it does ruin the engine and quickly with the wrong oil.

I do hope your engine is ok and I'm not trying to worry you unnecessarily. However,  you must be aware of the potential for a camshaft issue on safety grounds. Get a tech to listen to it as they can normally tell pretty quickly what it is.

As estateman says using correct spec oil in a PD engine is vital! It must meet the requirements of VW505.01 or VW507 and say so in writing on the can.

Note VW505.00 or 501.00, are not suitable oils and is the wrong oil that tiny difference 505.01 in the spec no. is the vital difference!

It signifies the addition of vital EP additives in the oil that protect the unit injector camshaft which subject the oil to exteme shear forces.

Most handbooks give you an Oil Spec to use.

Any oil will do as long as its in Spec. So why pay VW or others inflated prices.

Here use this...http://www.commaoil.com/passenger-vehicles

Comma has been for years a reliable oil provider. They also supply & bottle for others like Unipart/VW/Vauxhall etc.

Once you know what spec, do your homework on price & get some.

Example Fabia II RS 1.4 TSI (2010 - ) [Petrol Fully synthetic, high performance, 5W-40 oil, suitable for petrol vehicles including those with fuel injected and multivalve engines.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COMMA-SYNER-G-5W40-FULLY-SYNTHETIC-5-LITRE-MOTOR-OIL-/231021241100?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Car_Care_Cleaning&hash=item35c9f0630c

5 Ltr £26.45 delivered. But a trip to Halfrauds might cost the same or less.

Inflated prices?? Is harsh lets put it to perspectives its castrol rebranded so its already bargin at VW standard price.

The trick really is knowing some in the trade and getting in with TPS we run several VWs and i recently got 5w30 5l bottle for £15 plus vat not bad in my opinion.

^ What he said.

You can hardly say Quantum oil is expensive when compared to any other fully synthetic oil.

Just picked up some 'triple qx pd oil' today

5litres for £24 with a free oil filter from euro car parts

It meets required spec and have heard a fair few people using it in there vrs

This oil? Where did the extra discount come from on a price which was already discounted?
