VRS Petrol sound

Featured Replies

As much as its apparent across the vw range I would still get it checked by an independent......the cost of a new engine in these things is heart and bank breaking.....i would rather be a few quid short for a check up than a few grand short.

Scribbler;

Excellent advice about oil change intervals and your not sad for cleaning it, im in the middle of my body work buff up project. :giggle: ..... I've never really done an oil change on any vehicle but a purchase of a Haines Manual and a new tool kit me thinks and away i go soon.... The VAG service kit is pretty cheap to be honest so will plan that in before winter.....:D

  • Well I don't mean to unsettle you two and im not saying which is right but when mines upto temp it sits at 90° all day long regardless of road speed type and its quiet as a mouse. My mk1 VRS was the s

Back to sleep.

FWIW I had a petrol vRS 06 for around 15 months, and it sounded pretty lairy compared to my 12 plate vRS, lots of bass resonance in the cockpit and a bit of a rasp ourtside. Nothing that you'd wind your windows down and go looking for tunnels, but melliflous all the same.Current vRS sounds like a really ****e toyota sewing machine, so be thankful.

I don't think he's on about the usual wrarp from the engine when you give it beans on the loud pedal. Mine is also a bit lairy when you open her up a bit. Its just nice and quiet on tick over. Which I think is the default. It shouldn't sound like a diesel that is for definite.

hi mine is a bit noisy on tick over .had cam belt done etc .had cam chain checked thats  ok.had it servcied.

hav talk to a bloke and he said it cud be the cam shaft variator.but im not sure about this .

I wouldn't worry about it. I've been informed they all sound a bit rattley on idle- something related to the high pressure injectors.

Mine ticks quite loudly on idle. Car is serviced every 3000 miles (cambelt, coils etc done). I have no worries. Car pulled a standard 199 bhp and 207 ft/lb torque on a RR pre-tune.

Now it's modified with a stage 1 map and bolt ones. I regularly get 35-38 mpg on my runs to work. Once on the move the car sounds smooth and pulls smoothly through the rev ranges in all gears.

See mine's quite loud idling you really could pass it as a diesel.

Doesn't mean it's going to blow up does it lol?

Normal for it to sound quite a bit like a derv from the front on idle

i would check your cam folllower for your HPFP as when they start to wear that can also enhance the diesel type noise. The TFSI is quite noisy due to the nature of the high pressure fuel injectors but they are shouldn't sound like a diesel

Its a belt on the TFSI do you have the tsi?

Im going to record my engine on tick over so you can hear what it sounds like, see if yours is the same.

the 2.0 TFSI engine does also have a timing chain, albeit only a dinky one, at the flywheel end of the head.  The timing belt just drives the exhaust camshaft from the front of the engine, and the inlet cam is driven from the opposite end via the chain and an adjusting unit for varying the inlet cam timing

Should probably add, mine has had the cam follower done too.

Sorry about the shocking shaky hand video recording but its the sound your after. I tried to get as close to the engine as possible and from inside the car with the door open. About half way through I blip the throttle and it drops to normal tick over about 800rpm. Its noticeably quieter and with the bonnet closed all you can hear is the ticking. Once your inside you can't hear the engine. I believe this is the normal sounding TFSi.

Mine sounds the exact same- same colour too.

I'm not at all worried by the noise, sounds like a typical TFSI on idle.

Similiar sound to mine :)

I wouldn't class it as noisy though, that's quiet compared to a diesel.

U guys need to stop worrying - as Stu08 already mentioned, its the injectors ticking away.

Its "normal" according to VAG.

Mine sounds like a diesel when sitting inside with the doors closed though.

Sounds like mine too.

TFSI is not an engine to makes your hair stand on end. Direct injection tends to make things pretty agricultural.

Mine sounds like a diesel when sitting inside with the doors closed though.

Thats the whole point im trying to make all these people coming on saying don't worry about it its normal but they don't know what yours sounds like. The fact you said its sounds like a diesel from inside the car would make me say somethings wrong. Thats why i posted the clip as mine is silent inside the car. I had the door open aswell if i shut the door and turned the radio off the only way you would know the cars running is the revs needle and slight vibration of the gear knob. i Think people were misinterpreting your initial post and assuming you meant the ticking noise which is common on the TFSI. Sounds nothing like the diesel though PD or CR.

I'll get it looked at... As it's no way silent when inside and I would say it's slightly juddery on idle too...

Like if I was to hold my phone it'd shake in my hand slightly..

It might ultimatly be ok, i just wouldn't take everyones word for it unless they have physically heard it. Record the sound and post it up that would enable everyone to hear it and give a more informed opinion before you go spending your cash.

I'll get a recording put on later this PM :)

Actually sounds ok to me at work out these crappy speakers. That said if your at all worried i would get it checked out it will give you piece of mind.

For some reason Scribbler I thought you were the OP. Yours sounds fine, I got mixed up.

OP yours really doesn't sound unusual at all. They aren't the smoothest of engines on idle due to the DI. Unfortunately I can't pick up the lumpiness of your idle through the video.
