check oil light on at start, then goes off?

Featured Replies

Hi all, just a quick one...

My check oil light comes on when i first start the car, then goes off pretty much straight away. My first thought would be that it's only just below the sensor level, then once the engine's spinning it's ok, but i've read some old posts on here saying that the check oil light should stay on until you open the bonnet for a certain amount of time?

Obviously i'm going to check the oil anyway (i'm in the house in my pyjamas at the moment) just wondered.

My service is due at my 1.9 PD130's on 110k miles.

Cheers,

Dez

Isn't the light related primarily to oil pressure rather than volume?

Viz if your engine oil is too low, then that will of course affect pressure, similarly if the oil pick up is clogged or pump is on its way out.

If it stays on any more than a few moments, I'd say it's time for some more investigating.  A stitch in time.....

Might be worth replacing the sender as a relatively cheap starting point.

I'm not aware of any oil light staying on until you open the bonnet - not quite with you there.

N'owt wrong with checking oil levels in your jammies!

What colour is the light?

If i remember correctly, then:

Orange oil light = oil level low

Red oil light = omg turn off again! See a mechanic asap.

Hi Gaz, found it in this thread: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/230866-oil-warning-light

3rd post down, of course, that's not to say that the info in it is right lol....

Not checked my oil yet (although I have got dressed since posting this morning)

If I'm reading that right, all Doherty is referring to is that the bonnet switch resets the oil level indicator, not that a light stays on.

It's quite plausible that it would cause a reset because you'd obviously want the new level 'sensed' if you've just topped it up.  And I suppose that'd also have some value in a system check.

I'd have thought a sensor was a sensor and it'd be reporting the value of the oil level all the time,  but that's just my view and isn't one of a technical expert, just an oily rag.

Hi all,

so, i've checked the oil, it did need topping up, which has now been done (filled up to the bottom of the indent on the dipstick)

However, the 'check oil' message still appears on the display for a few seconds when i first switch on (until it is replaced by the 'service due' message showing instead).

if it's a fault with the sender/sensor, would this show up if it was hooked up to VCDS? Just wondering as I'm about to book it in for a service anyway,

Cheers

Is this the minimum mark, rather than the maximum?

Sorry, meant to the top of the indent lol, so that's the end of the flat bit, before it bends back up then bends straight again (if that makes sense?)

Sort of like this:

engine end     ---\____/--------------------------------    other end

Filled it up to about halfway up the indent to start with, then the message still popped up so i topped it to the top of the indent and still on?

Could be a dodgy oil level sensor.  Might be worth getting the car scanned for faults with VCDS, I'm not that far from you and if you look in the VCDS forum there is a list of people with VCDS, I know Jonny5 is close to Leicester.

Thanks Trundlenut, got in touch with Jonnny5 last night and we're sorting something for next week, much appreciated!
