Problems pulling away from cold. Superb Estate 11 - DSG

Featured Replies

I have to enter the main road outside our house from a slight incline off the drive.

Today went to pull out into the road and the accelerator refused to transfer power leaving me stranded in the middle of the road

Fortunately the traffic was light and I managed to get away with it but the thought of it happening in front of a large HGV or bus is quite worrying

I have found that when undertaking the initial reverse procedure prior to engaging drive for exit from the drive to the main road, power delivery is not instantaneous.

Anyone had similar experiences please?

If you look at Honest John's website, he states that the DSG gearbox can at times leave you stranded waiting for power to kick in, when pulling out of junctions etc.  One of the reasons I bought a manual!

Have you got hill hold assist? If so (or even if not), maybe try using the handbrake rather than the foot pedal and get the revs up a bit?

I have noticed that my 170 dsg is a little hesitant the first time I try to accelerate away immediately after a cold start. I now allow it to warm for a few minuits before starting off. This doesn't feel like the dsg issue as it does not happen as I start off, but rather after I have already driven a few yards and then I want to accelerate with the drive already engaged. The car is due a service soon and I will ask about it.

It is possible to deal with the dsg hesitancy on take up if you are aware of it. When it is important to move away sharply, such as on a very small roundabout or a tight and busy junction, transfer braking to the handbrake before you move off. Holding the car on the handbrake and not the footbrake ensures that the power comes in immediately you accelerate. I have used this technique successfully on a small roundabout busy near here with a built up centre island that restricts visability . Of course you don't want to hold the car on the handbrake for too long as this will wear the clutches. I have also developed the technique of releasing the footbrake and allowing the car to slowly roll forward a little before accelerating. This technique works well on a more open roundabout when you can more easily judge when to move forward.
