Superb "W8" light issue

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I see that this has been covered somewhat before, but I wonder if there are any more solutions out there!

I have bought a Superb interior light to fit as a first mod to my new 2008 Octavia Tour. The car is really clean so I don't want to hack it about too much, but all the same I've got a bit of a problem with this passenger airbag warning light (pictured), I haven't seen one of these in a dome light before! Google searches haven't revealed what airbag light (if any) was fitted to earlier cars, so I'm unsure if retrofitting an earlier light is an option, or if perhaps persuading a light from another car to fit a switch blank on the dash would be an option. Are these airbag lights even strictly necessary, for roadworthiness requirements etc? I don't forsee myself using the airbag deactivation feature any time soon! Any insights or opinions would be greatly appreciated :)

I opted for making my own w8 unit (but I like to do things on the cheap!)

I've just had a look at your site, good job you did there too - I like your thinking! I've already got my Superb light though, so I'll crack on with that (if it'll work!)

The passenger airbag switch was an option. Have you got one?

Yes, there's a key-perated switch in the glovebox alright. I don't know if it was standard fit by 2008, but it's mentioned on the build sheet anyway. Hence the warning light on the original light!

There's nowhere to put it at all the Superb light, so I'll have to do something about it - either stuff it into the headliner or relocate it somewhere!

What's so special about the superb light? Is that mood lighting I see?

Exactly, there's a gentle red glow on the interior at night, handy for seeing things without ruining your night vision by turning on the interior light. The light controls are backlit as well, making them easier to see along with the other dash switches. I have a Passat one on my mk4 and it's very effective I find.

Here's a pic of a Passat one in action - the only difference with the Superb version is that the switches are backlit green - the ambient lighting is still red, as the colour is easier on the eyes.

Here's the Passat light in my mk4 (I have a sunroof, so it incorporates the sunroof controls)

I don't suppose any of these light units came in black?

I just had a browse on eBay and logged in purely to ask that question

VW Individual made a very small batch of black ones, which were mostly sold to the US. They go for silly money!
