17's or 18's for Winter wheels?

Featured Replies

If it was me, I'd see what Skoda recommend for winter tyres for the vRS (perhaps one of our Scandinavian owners can comment?) and go with those - any sensible insurance company should have no cause for complaint when informed (if they are a different size to standard).  If they (the insurers) complain and start claiming "Modification!  Heresy! Premium Increased!" then find another insurer...

I go with the bi-annual tyre swap myself for the same size but I guess it all depends on the cost - plus the convenience factor.  If you're happy to swap your wheels at home (and have somewhere to store them properly), then at least you a) have them for when it suddenly goes cold (as stocks suddenly get depleted at the first snowflake) and B) don't have to arrange a swapover time at short notice.

EDIT:  ThePlumber has just posted the magic list in another wheel thread: http://www.skoda.de/...load.php?id=769 - pick your engine code and pick one of the tyres listed.  "Manufacturer approved" - so shouldn't be a problem.

  • I'd always thought narrower tyres were better on snow, not sure exactly why!! Also, rally cars always seem to have narrower tyres when they run on snow!! I'm sure there's a very good reason for it, pr

  • I think it's due to the car's weight being on a smaller cross sectional area so enabling the tyres to 'cut' into the snow instead of riding over it.   The Continental TS850 and Goodyear Ultra Grip 8

The VRS uses the Golf Performance Pack brake setup on the front as standard iirc so that'll be 340mm disks - too big for 16's! From personal experience running three different sized winter tyre setups on the Yeti, for snow, id recommend the narrower tyre and tallest sidewall combination possible. The narrowness of the tyre is the most important thing for overall conditions in snow without doubt imo (all other things being equal of course).

As I don't speak or understand German, I haven't got a clue what it says!

All I want to know is what size wheel rims I can use so can I order some Continental ContiWinterContact TS830P tyres (205/50 R17 93V), as I have found some at a very good price.

Also what puzzles me is SUK won't give me the necessary information without a VIN or Reg Number, why not? I want to be able to place an order shortly before the prices start to rise.

Octavia III starts as page 197.

First column is your engine code (Cxxx) which is on the VIN sticker on your car. (Motorkenn-buchstabe)

Second column (Typschlüssel-nummer) is the variant (again, should be on the VIN sticker; Axx)

3rd column is tyre size; 4th is the rim dimension.  5th is the Offset of those rims.

6th column is "Snow Chains - Yes/No".

Not having an Octy 3 to check, I've no idea what the actual variants are.

To answer your question, 6Jx17, ET48 for the rim to match your 205/50R17 tyres

So if I wanted to go for some Continental ContiWinterContact TS850 225/50 R17 98 V's what rim size what I need to look for?

Thanks.

225/50R17 isn't an Octavia size, it appears?  If it was, then you'd be looking at a 7Jx17 ET49 or a 7.5Jx17 ET51 or thereabouts.  Looks like 225/45R17 is the Octavia size though although recommended rim width and tyre rating depends on the engine...

225/50R17 is applicable to the Mk2 Scout only.

The thing is I want to get the best for the vRS and I would like to fit Conti's to the car for the winter, but I'm struggling to find a set of wheel rims & tyres at a decent price. I'm torn between the 830P & 850's but I can't get the 850's in 17" without changing parameters.

Not according to the dealers in Germany. Octy 3 size when fitted to 7J x 17 ET 49 rim according to winter tyre package info.

Sorry misread 225/45/17 tyre required not 225/50/17.

I've been looking at this too for my new vRS estate that's on order.  Ideally I'd like all-season tyres on 17" wheels, but I've found out that a set of alloys will cost £250 per wheel, and that Skoda don't supply 17" steel wheels.

So I either try to find other steel wheels which will fit the new vRS, or fit 22//40/18 winter or all-season tyres on the wheels supplied.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

That'll be why then - I was looking at the Mk3 Octavia tyres and wheels...

There's also a few places that do ATS Twisters, whilst silver (won't show kerbing so much as the black wheels) are around for some reasonable prices, they are 7.5J x 17, 5 x 112 & ET 50.

From £365 delivered.

As far as I can see that they are just 1 mm out on the ET that SUK recommend for the wheels.

good price indeed, place i found was £600 so guessed ud seen cheaper :)

On Ebay BTW,

On previous cars I have simply bought a set of steel wheels and put conti winter tyres on then swapped them over. On my new VRS (got it two days ago) the price of another set of alloys is fairly upsetting, plus the cost of expensive conti tyres.

My question is can i put a higher profile tyre on my 18" rims (currently 225/40). I wonder if i can get away with a 225/45 to get a bit more sidewall?

For what I can see your looking at about £1k for alloys and winters

You can knock that down to £5-600 if you shop for the tyres in the summer.

You can knock that down to £5-600 if you shop for the tyres in the summer.

And 500 Euros (£400) for a set of 4 winters over here (225/40 R18 92Y) which I've got for my Octy 3 when I get it! (Golus alloys). Thing is being compulsory over here during the winter months, there's more of a market, so cheaper.

Richie

There is a nice set of 17" Zeniths on Ebay at the moment for £300 inc Conti WinterContact 830P tyres, whether they'll fit the Mk3 I don't know?

Mmm, Mr Rao, who has a notoriety for being completely & utterly wrong!  :giggle:
