Yeti competitor from Nissan: the new X-trail

Featured Replies

As I mentioned before this is basically a long wheel base Qashqai.  So the nose and dash is all the new QQ.  But this now takes over from the hideously ugly current X-trail as a seven seater version to replace both that and the QQ+2.  Also this has a sunroof that can open that the QQ will not get (though it escapes logic why the front opening panel is the smaller of the two?!)

I think it looks good inside and out bar the awfully large and tacky rear lights.

That looks just as good as the Yeti facelift to me.

I like it but it does remind me of a slightly less stylish Santa Fe. Interior looks like a step up from the current one.

Bit big for a Yeti competitor though isn't it?

Hence, as I described, picture it has the new QQ!

Best copy of the new Rav4 I have seen.

The trouble with all these new SUVs hitting the market is that they all look similar to me body-shape wise.

I think our Yeti stands out from the crowd. No other so called competitor has caught my eye. Besides,we have yet to see an SUV with a window area like the Yeti.

Having huge rear windows is a treat and a must for families with children.

But it's bigger, so not a competitor? The QQ is the competitor to the Yeti

Seems Nissan are hoping this competes with Mondeos as well as QQs did with Focuses (Focii?). What they seem to have forgotten is that not many Mondeos sell these days; the BMW 3 series in the big seller in that segment, and is likely much tougher in terms of showroom appeal.

As to whether this gives any clues to the QQ replacement Yeti competitor - we'll have to see. It might be on the same platform but that doesn't mean much...

What I said above comes directly from the horse's mouth - an engineer working right now on the QQ replacement.  He's probably driving one as we speak somewhere around Millbrook.  So trust me what you see in the Xtrail is really just the new QQ+2 with a silly Xtrail name on it.  The nose up to the front doors are the same as the QQ with the QQ getting a shorter wheelbase and a slightly different tail with more slender lights.

Need any more proof?

Well the new QQ will be revealed on the 7th...  but Nissan have done some teaser shots of the nose today:

Haha... and who is surprised that it looks 98% like an X-trail?  :giggle:

Interesting that the range will start with a new 1.2 turbo petrol engine. Where have I seen one of those before...

Yep, the grille area is very similar to the Next-Trail, and the rest of the car is a very similar shape to the current QQ.

Looks a bit like a mazda front on.

Which isn't a bad thing IMHO.

Interesting they are not going to do a +2 model.

I saw something like that today on the A421 all camo'd up.

Was definitely a Nissan.

mmmm am I the only one who sees similarities with all the above said already (QQ, X-Trail, Mazda) and ... a lil bit of dacia Duster as well (especially looking at it from the front to the back from a side angle if that makes any sense)?!

Different doesn't always = better

Just different

I quite like it although, having just watched the video on What Car?, I am not so sure that I like the back end. The interior is a marked improvement and the front ok but overall, and unlike the Yeti,  it does lack any truly original styling. Looks like a cut and paste of various Japanese/Korean design themes.

Disappointed to read that it has been lowered, even though it is only by 15mm, it is still going in the wrong direction for a class of car where people value a higher seating position. Might go and have a look at one when they are out though,,,

Apart from lowering the suspension the front seats are also mounted MUCH lower and at a proper height. The Japanese designers wanted the current QQ's seats mounted high up to give the impression the car is a real SUV you step down from to get out. Fine and well but also meant most people's heads touched the ceiling inside. Daft and a huge reason why I never got on with the current QQ.

Is it right to assume the QQ and X-trail variant will both be built in Sunderland?  Well, "continue to be built in Sunderland" so far as the QQ variant is concerned.

Has the QQ moved away from its Renault Scenic platform?

Did I hear a rumour that several of the latest European spec Infiniti models will come out of Sunderland too?

Do you detect a Renault/Nissan/Dacia strategy here?

Better built and higher spec Nissans out of Sunderland.

Cheap and cheerful Dacias out of wherever in the Balkans Dacias come from.

Renaults somewhere in the middle, both market position and geographically?

Renault F1 engines out of...... Can't be too long before they're UK sourced too can it?

Yep, UK built and it feels very nicely made.

I don't like it, it looks basically same boring as any other car from that group like kia, hyundai etc

Yeti even after recent make up still looks original and distinguished on the road.

+1 !
