I painted them.

Could you be kind enough to describe the painting process to me as I'm an idiot and mine are peering at me from the box, telling me they need to be green.

Will this affect my warranty if the dealer notices?

If you've put on the 312mm brakes then your warranty on the brakes is probably shot anyway. If your dealer doesn't mind the 312's then I doubt green paint will affect their choice?

Sorry I phrased the question badly, but you answered my question anyway. It wasn't the colour choice I was concerned about. :o

Here's what I did -

Buy -

Hammerite Smooth Green Paint

Hammerite Special Metal Primer

Hammerite Thinners - Large

Nice little brush

Available from Halfruads or I got mine from a decorators company called Brewers.

Strip the brakes down (I'll deal with it for one caliper) -

Remove the brake hose - Plug the hole.

Remove the pads.

Looking at the caliper you will see two black 'tubes', remove the end caps and then two slider studs using an allen key, this will split the caliper and carrier. Pull out the tubes as well.

Drain out all remaining brake fluid, push the piston fully home.

Degrease both parts using the thinners.

Carefully mask up all machined areas, the piston and the bleed nipple.

Apply the primer and allow to dry as per the tin.

Apply two coats of Green - Ditto.

And in true Haynes form refitting is the reverse of dismantling.

This is very brief but you should get the idea, important to ensure no dirt enters the fluid chamber and no paint on machined surfaces.

Thank you very much. I shall make my way to the said Hafrauds as its 100yds away from my house. Should be dry pretty quick in this weather.

Thanks again.

Anyone reccomend either Spray or Brush on green? Seen both in the Smooth 'straight on rust' Hammerite?

Just wondering...

Have to say considering I used only Hammerite products, I used the primer which you may not need and how hot it was mine didn't dry as quickly as i'd hoped.

They had 48hrs in the airing cupboard before they went on and the paint was still a little soft - best to give yourself plenty of time.

As for fitting follow Ross' guide in the how to section and you can't go wrong, only minimal tools needed.

Get yourself a small bottle of Brake Fluid while you're at Halfrauds. You may like to breeze by and have a look at the 7 drawer 'Snap On' style tool chest I treated myself to on Saturday. Bloody 10% days - make you buy things!!!!

Lummox rates the spray so even though I had the brush on already, I ordered some spray - Lucky I had the brush on stuff!! Nuff said :P

I went mad in there on Saturday, Mer stuff is 3 for 2, +10% off, made sense really. I didn't actually need any of it.

I might take a fast paced walk past the toolbox section.

*******!!!!

Will be painting them one night this week & then fitting on Saturday morning.

Nice easy job Jon. I removed the brake hoses on mine and used the TT ones as previously stated. If you decide to do that here's how I did it.

Remove the horseshoe clip on the strut first then I released the caliper holding bolts just leaving the last one finger tight and then took the hoses from the fixed pipe connector. Take the small rubber nipple cover from the brake caliper and use this to plug the brake pipe :P . I didn't lose hardly any fluid really, quite surprising. When you refit the brake pipe it will only go in one way.

Also another tip - Undo the small Torx Brake Disc securing screw first that way if it's really tight you can have an assistant press the brake pedal to stop the disk moving while you undo it.

Remember a little bit of Copper Grease on the sliding parts.

Another stoopid question....How do you bleed brakes with an ABS System??? This is the 1st car I've had with ABS :(

No different to a normal non abs car.

Show off!! :finger:

You don't need that many draws for a Stilson, Adjustable and a Lump Hammer - My 7 draws are more than enough :D

See the choice of the profesional.

The search is on for some green Hammerite!

Local B&Q don't have any, but do have some Plasti-kote Metal Protekt in dark green which will be too dark.

Gonna try Halfords or some more DIY places like Focus Do it All or Homebase, but I might not get the brakes fitted at the weekend. :(

My brakes arrived 5 minutes ago!! yeah!!

Halfords had the Smooth Green in tins and spray, but no Special Metal Primer. Do It All had the primer but no Green at all. B&Q is my next stop after I finish work.

The box is bloody heavy, isn't it?!!!

Well heavy, got a call from Porters (work on a Uni campus) and had to lug it from there to the office. Then I couldn't contain myself so had to open it like a xmas present and got my hands covered in black. :D

Can't wait to clean them up and paint them! Then somehow work out where to get to fit them, as I don't trust myself playing with the brakes on my car! May wait until the Sump Protector Group Buy goes through and get them both fitted together.

Yay! Got some primer & Hammerite from Halfords.
