HELP!!! I have fitted the radiator, (half of my knuckles are missing to prove it) everything connected, no leaks. BUT! After filling with anti freeze using the expansion tank, I let the engine run for a few mins, The top hose to the radiator gets hot, the anti freeze in the expansion tank is warming up, very well, but the bottom hose is still cold, the engine warmed up but nothing showing in the temp gauge. ANY IDEAS :-( I just want my car to work :-(

Define "run for a few minutes". If it's just sitting on the drive, idling, it will take ages to get to operating temperature.

Have you checked to make sure the thermostat is working correctly?

I had something similar after I'd drained the system, installed new thermostat and the re-filled the system. In the end I took it out for a 10 mile run on the M2, got back and all the pipes were nice and toasty, and the gauge was at 1/2-way point. :)

I will check the thermostat, should the thermostat be connected to the bottom hose?

  • Author
I removed thermostat, it opens up in boiling water, so that is OK.

I let the car run for a very long time, Great News! both get hot so does the radiator.

BUT!! No fan, I tested the fan directly off the battery, that runs fine.

I now think it must be the fan switch. The new radiator came with one fitted, but sadly it was a different connection 'see Photo' so I fitted the old one.

Does anyone know if you can test a fan switch some how?

Yes, the fan switch is what it says it is.... A switch... It's either on or off.

if you have a multimeter set it to the continuity setting and see if you have a circuit across the 2 pins. You should be able to get a pair of spade terminals on that new fan switch rather than searching for the proper connector.

Did you keep the old switch? ;)

Damn!! tested the switch it works fine.

My 12 year old daughter said it was a really cool experiment though.

Could be a shot in the dark, or teaching granny to suck eggs but.................have you checked the fuse?

A voltage check across the socket side of the connection? Make sure there's 12v getting to the switch?

  • Author

Good idea, I will check in the morning.

Worst case scenario, given that you've tested the switch and the fan, is a home-made loom for the fan. ;)

Yeh I had to make a custom loom for mine, the fan circuit is permanently live, ie; not igniton switch controlled so you could potentially just wire it straight up to the battery via a fuse.

Power is getting to the fan.

Thermostat is OK

Fan switch is OK

Fuse blown !!!

I changed the fuse it blew straight away.

If I connect a live from the battery to one of the terminals on the back of the fan the fan runs.

Could this still be a fan fault though

:wall:

its a bit unsual, might be worth putting a new second hand fan in there.

I have just connected a tester on the lead going to the fan. When engine gets up to temp, light comes on, fuse does not blow. I plugged in the fan it ran for one second and blew the fuse.

Aghhhhh!

I just seems strange fan runs when connected to a live.

Time to buy a fan I suppose.

if i recall the fan motor is only held on with 3 nuts, you don't need the entire metal cowelling

Again maybe a granny sucking eggs question: have you checked to make sure the fuse is the right rating?

According to the Haynes book of myths and half-truths:

Fuse 17:  25 amp:  Coolant fan, horn, headlight flash.

.....so you should have a couple of other things not working too ;)

Could be that the wrong fuse has been put in, but is man enough for the horn and lights, but not the fan. The old "any old fuse will do" kind of thing ;)

.....or there's a fault with one of the other two causing the fuse to blow. If you leave the fan unplugged and put in a new fuse, what happens?

  • Author

Fuse is a 25A in socket 17 so is the right one.

I think it is new fan time :-(

Still waiting for the fan to arrive, Aghhhhh!  So i got underneath the car jetwashed it all. Aqua-steeled everything that I could and then undersealed everything else. Looks very nice underneath. Tommorow I will attack the paint on the rear Turrets, plates in place and ground back so looks better, rust was not really too bad but I would rather sort it before it starts.

Fan arrived today, Fitted and all works as it should. I still can't work out why the old fan worked if connected to battery. Tried the car, great until I turned on the interior fan to clear the screen POP fuse blew :-( Oh no here we go again.

My blower motor is a bit broken and I think it needs a right good clean / perhaps new brushes - squirting WD40 into where the brushes are gets it going but only temporarily - I suspect yours has a similar problem and it's blowing it's fuse trying to overcome the inertia.

A replacement is £85 from EuroCarParts brand new....... so it's worth trying to get it going again! :)

If you are too lazy to remove the strut brace then it is a real struggle. :-)

Stick finger in fan and move blades. Stuck solid. Problem found. It freed of very easily.

I removed the mystery bit of rubber and threw it in my tool box (I assume it is not needed).

I then re-fitted the cover using 2 clips and popping the rest in my tool box. I expect to need to do this job again soon.

Sent my lovely wife up the road to buy 20A blade fuses so I can test.
