Xenon headlamp option? Worth it?

Featured Replies

I ordered mine with Bi-Xenons. My last 2 cars have had them and I would never be without them, the difference is amazing. Simply putting a HID conversion kit onto standard headlights is never as good. Go for it every time.

  • Xenon should be number one option, always. Second Parking Sensors, third sunroof

  • Why on earth would anyone want to upgrade the bi-xenons, they are superb both on dip and main beam. If you can't see clearly with the bi-xenons it's your eyes that want upgrading, not the lights!!

Yes!

I had them on a 2008 Octavia II L&K. They were good, but too much hassle. I drive a lot at night, as in frequent 200 mile+ overnight journeys. Despite the lights being checked as adjusted, auto-levelling etc, I couldn't go more than one journey without somebody putting their high beam on after I went past. The Octy III might have a better design though. The II's were like sharp narrow beams that dazzle like hell. Passat was pretty much the same.

GET THEM you will enjoy

Never had a car with Xenons, so am looking forward to them on the vrs we have coming, I hope I wont be disappointed....

I have the same model, but never had any problems with my xenons, only thing I wish would be better is the high beam.(halogen)

That is much better with my new octy III with bi-xenon and light assist.. :)

And you can adjust them via Maxidot for European driving - probably my favourite function on my Mk 2 vRS, as I go to France 2 or 3 times a year.

Oh, and the clarity of beam / view is astounding.

Do it!

Our experience is similar but usually drivers that flash anyone with better lights than theirs so we stopped taking any notice.  As Xenons become more common we had less and less flashes.

I have an Elegance with Bi-Xenons and would say that they are a must. Once you drive a car with them, you will never want to go back to Halogens. The difference is amazing. Yes you get some drivers flash you from time to time, but that tends to be on undulating roads.

Shame they are so expensive; as much as my other options put together. So will be going back to halogen (and adding nightbreakers) from the current Yeti's xenon's, as the budget will not stretch to another k.

TP

Maybe its just me but I had them on my Qashqai until last week and never understood what the fuss was about. Hence I didn't spec them on my fab Elegance.

It's quite a difference between a reflector and a projector in terms of light distribution. The Qashqai has reflectors. For one, the reflector solution use the D*r type xenon bulb, which has a shield to prevent too much light scatter above the cut-off line. This results in an inferior light output compared to a projector solution, which use a D*s bulb. The difference can be as much as a couple of hundred lumens. Another thing is that there can be substantial differences between projectors as well. The projectors on the O3 are way up there compared to other cars I've driven.

There have been numerous reports on the xenon's being very poor on the Qashqai.

As above this was likely down to the early reflector design on the MkI. The MkII got projectors and they are still poor.

Just goes to show some manufacturers do it better than others.

Hi,

I am about to order an Octavia 1.6 TDI. Was wondering if it was worth adding in the

"Bi-Xenon, AFS and LED daytime running lights & black cornering fog lights" option.

Apart from the safety aspects, does this option change the appearance of the car?

Any thoughts?

Wouldn't be without them well worth the money. You will see all the benefits just look at the manual on line and see

I love the ones that come standard on my vrs, think it makes the car so much more classy, also i think the little dance they do at the start is also funky too haha.

For driving i must say they are so so so so much better than my mk2 headlights. The question is does it justify the price of the option = if your not strapped for cash then do it

If I had to bin all the optional extras on my car to have the bi xenons then I would have done so without hesitation. If you do much night driving then they are a must have. Vital where I live driving across the New Forest with wild animals roaming loose on the unlit roads!

has anyone upgraded their factory spec xenons yet? I'v read a couple of things that say main beam is a little disappointing, although dipped is still good.

What about previous cars? is it as simple to do as with halogens? any recommendations of upgrades?

Dipped and main beam are both awesome on mine.

Pmsl.

The headlamps ruin the lines of the front of the car. I'm going to mod mine with perspex sheeting and remove the lamps.

people probably said that when halogens first came out. Bet you've not upgraded to Canton speakers because 'your ears work fine' :P

But anyway, theres nearly always something better than OEM spec, you can have different colour temps, different quality etc. Just wondering if anyone has looked into it in the past

Candles! Far to advanced tech... how about just a smouldering twig?

With some of the school runners around here, that's about right.  :wall:

There is a very good saying - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". And the optional bi-xenons certainly aren't broken.
