Right, I'm going to be changing the gearbox oil on my 2003 Fabia vRS as it's getting a bit notchy.

 

I've read that a special tool is needed to extract the drain plug. Am I right in thinking it's an security M16 spline bit?

Is it the same for the drain and filler plug?

Also is it 2 or 2.3 litres to fill? There is conflicting info from a search on here.

 

I assume it's just fill until it just seeps out of the fill plug?

You need about 2.2 litres of oil which is just about till it starts to come out. Just keep an eye on how much is going in. It should be full after about 2.2 litres.

 

Filling is a buggar and I ended up using a length of pipe attached to a funnel to fill it.

 

The tool you need is indeed an M16 security spline as per this ebay ad:

Make sure you can open the fill plug before the drain one! It's the same tool for the fill and drain plugs. You may need a new washer but I didn't and reused the old one.

 

And take it for a good run before and get it up to temperature.

 

Are you using the proper VAG oil?

Yes I will be getting the oil from the Skoda dealer.

 

I will be doing this at the same time as an oil change service so it should be nice and hot.

 

Did you have to remove the battery to get to the plug? I assume it was the same layout on your Cordoba?

Just phoned the dealer, based on my reg I need G052157A2 which is £75 for 3L.

 

They will do G052171A2 for £47 for 3L but he didn't recommend it as it could be for a different 6speed box.

It was the same layout as my cordoba.

 

I think I just removed the air intake to gain enough access.

 

I know mine was the cheaper oil but may have been a different box. I just used the stuff the dealer told me I needed.

 

My box was the FJW (I think) the very long geared one.

I bought the M16 spline socket ready to change my gearbox oil, only to find out it was a 8 or a 10mm Hex plug instead....This wasn't a temp fix either as my latest vRS also has the same fitted so maybe worthwhile checking before paying out for something you don't need

I put redline in my 05 fabia, and redline is amongst the best gear oil you can get and that was £45! - which i thought was expensive! lol

Is the gearbox oil not lifetime? So doesn't need to be changed unless something is up?

I found this extremely helpful gearbox workshop manual. The Fabia vRS gearbox is not 02M, it's actually 08A.

 

From what I've read, it's almost exactly the same as an 02M 6 speed.

 

My gearbox code FSM requires oil "G052 171 AX", where X is the bottle size, G052 171A2 = 1L.

 

This is contradictory to what my dealer said.

It's not normally that sticky... more slippery...

As per my thread, I put " G052 171A2" in my 2005 6 speed vrs gearbox, it's been fine.

Etka says gear oil should be g052 157 a2 in an 05 fabia vrs and it needs 2.3l

When I go to an 03 reg car its the same.

Thats the expensive one int it lol. Off to tps now will see what the price is.

Correct stuff is £21+vat ish from tps per litre
