1400 AFH 16V conversion question - threads merged

In his AFH conv tech guide Teflon Tom mentions some cambelt covers that help fill the hole left when using Tom's custom mounting.

I think these (AST,AVZ engine codes) are the parts

036109121M -Top
036109127K - Bottom

036109143B - Back

I ordered these (from the local SEAT dealer) but didn't get them before the engine was in the car. Just trying to work out if I can fit with the engine in and without disturbing the water pump and cambelt timing...as I think the back part is partly held on by the water pump bolts. Obviously some cutting to fit around the custom mounting will also be required.

Anyway I thought I'd post pics for reference - obviously haven't fitted yet so might be wrong but looks like what I need.

(Three parts clipped together temporarily)

Ah yes you are right. That is certainly not going to happen any time soon I'm afraid.

Driven the 16v a bit now (about 250 miles) and the idle speed is starting around 900 rpm but is rising after driving to about 1200 periodically and then coming back down Is this still the ECU "learning" or does it sound like the TB needs cleaning perhaps.....or worse?

Could it be the temperature sender? I've noticed the gauge seems a little erratic (NB it was fine with the old engine).

Yes either that or the thermostat.

What does it drive like compared to a 1300?

The 1400 engine is quite a bit smoother. It is quicker obviously but you need to keep the revs up. (My ex 1600 probably ideally needs a 1300 final drive) Sounds pretty good over 4000rpm with a 50 mm exhaust system.

One thing to consider it's a lot tighter under the bonnet than a 1300 so not so easy to work on.

Got my exchange (lower rate) tax disc yesterday so it looks as though the DVLA is processing the engine change without too much trouble. Maybe the recent move from processing at local offices to Swansea has helped.

What cat converter did you use? I only need an exhaust system to finish mine off now.

Probably go with 50mm diesel system but unsure what cat to use, i have my original cat and also have a polo gti cat also 50mm

Is anyone able to do an acceleration video?

I'm in two minds. I really would like to keep the proper Skoda engine but I also fancy a fast hatch.

I used the polo downpipe including cat and cut about 50mm off the end. I then cut a bit off the front of the diesel system and joined with a 50mm joiner.

I've only got 2 of the mountings left, eon is earmarked for somebody already when I remember to reply to the pm.. Last batch too, the company that made them for me have gone under. So in future it will be autocad drawings only from me.

Think il just get myself a diesel system and get it to work with the gti cat and stainless manifold/downpipe, i was pondering a custom 2.25" system but just money and hassle.

Anything bigger than 2" is a waste on a normal ish felicia, I'm just about to start making a 2.5" system for mine at great cost I might add.

How many did you have made Tom? Do you know if they are all actually now on converted cars? Maybe we could start an 16V engined Felicia register!

The diesel system is cheap as chips (for an aftermarket one at least) and fits to the Polo down pipe with a couple of cuts (I used an angle grinder) and a joiner.

It makes quite a nice noise under acceleration attached to the AFH as well. I think its a no brainer.

It's only about 15 if I recall including prototypes, funny thing is I haven't made any profit out of it, been knocking them out for virtually what I paid to have them laser cut, if there is enough requests I may consider getting another batch done in a thinner plate size and made of aluminium, all iff's not definite, I'd have to speak to Colin and see if we could sell them via the briskoda shop/marketplace.

Got my amended V5 and a tax refund the other day. Unfortunately doesn't quite cover the conversion costs!

I would be intrested in one.. as this seems to be a good conversation to do..

Thought i would update on my 1.6 afh.

Mine is now finnished after finally sorting the exhaust out, went for the diesel system and the 1.6 16v cat. Also had to change the gearbox as mine was broke so it now has a felicia 1.3 gearbox.

Only gave it a quick blast up and down the road and it seems to be pretty quick.

Still having throttle body issues though!

That's really clean. Did you polish the cam cover?

Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk

You'll be doing that to yours soon juan27... 1600cc wooo.. You know you want to.

It was pretty clean when i brought it, so just gave it a quick going over with so old metal polish i had in the garage.

That separator between the cone filter and the engine is great nu99et18!!

may i ask if you did it  yourself or maybe bought it from somewhere? because i have a cone filter set up like yours for my 1.3 mpi in my favorit and would love to put something similar because it might be pulling warm air from the engine

I did it myself mate, just used some aluminium sheet and cut it to shape then fixed it inplace, dont suffer an heatsoak. There is actually a cold air feed i fitted aswell but not in this photo.
