Monte Tech - Steering Creak

Featured Replies

Mine happens on slow speed movement.

Also on full lock then moving the wheel back to center.

Sounds like from the steering wheel.

Having jacked the car up. The track rods do knock on steering movement.

This car (vrs) has had steering rack replaced and shortly after this squeaking has started, which sounds like rubber rubbing on something near to the steering wheel, quite high up.

So you think it could be the inner track rod ends?

Garage have ordered a slip ring for the steering wheel but say it's unlikely that.

They then also went on to say that squeaks, rattles and any adjustments are only covered for the first 6 months or 6000 miles and are investigating this as good will.

If I find out that there is a bulletin for this and it's a potential safety issue I will not be happy. I assume they can search bulletins for key words on a particular model?

I spoke to Skoda CS this morning about my recent work that's been done to check all was ok etc and I mentioned the track rod issue, she said the dealer can check the system to see if my car is affected by this, I'm still going to mention it at MOT next week, will update then

Glad you are getting sorted :-)

This would probably be the sound im hearing when pulling off on full lock. I dont get a creaking but more of a 'clunk' i'm not under warranty but none the less will get it in and have it looked at. If they're quoting silly prices i'll get the parts and do it myself.

Thanks for the heads up guys.

Its as much a feeling as a noise, as you turn lock to lock at very slow speeds/stood , the tie rods judder as the joints stick/let go progressively. Ours did it more noticeablely reversing and from day one, I initially ignored it thinking it would go away.

Today I took the estate in for its third service/30000 miles and mentioned it when booking in. They looked at it, confirmed the fault and immediately without consultation changed the tie rods and did a 4 wheel laser alignment under warranty. Under the health check sheet it was listed as "requiring immediate attention". The job takes about 4 hours. The fault was described by a master tech as "due to contaminated grease".

Must have been a huge batch of contaminated grease!

Just had the 2nd service done yesterday and mentioned the creaking steering sound. Picked the car up to be advised its a known issue that affects Ibiza's and Fabia's; the wrong grease was used at the factory and breaks up over time (no details of TPI given)

Car is booked in on the 12th Oct to be fixed under warranty.

My monte tech is making a similar noise,  A little ****ed off having bought this from a main dealer with a known fault that should have been fixed prior to taking delivery.  Will get on to the local dealers for a warranty claim.

What age is your car?

have a 14 plate monte and think I might have this issue.

Yes its a 14 plate monte carlo tech black edition with 26,000 on the clock.  Only recently noticed the low speed steering noise seems or sounds like a steering tie rod boot scraping on something not metal to metal so not panicking at the moment bit have a day off next week so might get local dealer to look at it.  I'll update you when i know what I'm dealing with.  I suspect they will try and wiggle out of it but the car is only a few months old from when I picked it up and I had to argue the toss with them to service it before purchase!!!!! Criminal

I have read reference to tpi previously - you aware of tpi reference number??

car went back to the supplying dealers and they confirmed not one but two TPI recalls.  The sterring rack tie rods both sides replaced and retracking done which has solved the low speed noise when parking and also oil leak from cam chain cover new seal replaced again factory TPI noticed oil on the lower plastic engine cover on driver side wheel well.  Both replaced under warranty at no cost but a little ****ed off that the car was sold with these know faults.  Happy to say all fixed.  Garage did have issues in parts being delivered to the dealer ship so make sure you get a courtesy car.
