Fabia Vrs TDI stage rally car build

Think we finished today's stages in 42nd overall, and 3rd in class, had a boost pipe pop off on the first stage, which lost a lot of time, the next stage was a repeat of stage 1 and we went 25 seconds faster and gained 17 places,

Been consistently around 3>4 seconds slower than the escort in 2nd in class but he has a 280 bhp cosworth engine ..

09090001: This is the 1st stage from the last rally, you can see the dampers are failing about halfway thru , intercom was playing up too which is why there is a close up of Andrews hand for a mo

  • Ok she is up and running now, got the rad back in and the heater piped up. unfortunatly the lsd from tran-x will take 12 weeks even tho it is in stock it needs more machining or something so that is

  • Just got home, and I have to say, thanks John, she flies now, we surprised a few today that's for sure, followed a 250bhp escort with a sequential box in it for 3 miles and he had nothing on me out of

Looks like tomorrow is going to be very wet so it is all to play for but we don't have wets just cut slicks so could be interesting.

are you entering the Mid Wales Rally ?

Doubtful I probably will stick to tarmac with it

Good luck

Off to sweet lamb tomorrow for auto solo test

Well, finished 31st overall and got 2nd in class :-D, had a minor clash with a Subaru and bent my rear door but apart from that we have had no problems.

Well done Jim

Sounds like a good first run out.

Well done Jim and co. Excellent first outing. :)

Excellent. Well done :)

Well done Jim. I followed the action on the website for most of the day. A really good result for first time out in the car.

When is the next one?

We lost around a minute over the 2 days , 20 secs due to the boost pipe coming off, then the heavens opened with 2 cars to go before us and caught us on uncut slicks so I was a bit over cautious and dropped 15 secs to the next in class, and on sunday I had a big lockup under braking from around 90 mph which stalled the engine and it wouldn't restart on the key we had to have a push, strange as it was almost as of the battery was flat but I'm thinking maybe the starter motor of an earth lead is breaking down with the heat, this lost probly 20 secs again, the car leading the class went out which bumped us to 2nd in class :)

it is a strange feeling when we got up behind a nice mk2 escort with 250 bhp and a sequential box and all I can hear is his engine revving up thru the gears as we accelerate up behind him and pass him under braking lol. need an osr door now and a bit of paint on the sill where a rock jumped out and scraped it lol.

Oh and Fabokavrs, cracking job on the map mate, dont go away I have some ideas :).......

the wavetrac lsd has failed in some way as it no longer locks and has no preload which has cost us a bit of time here and there today so that needs looking at, on saturday it was awsome with the grip it supplied then suddenly it just gave up and span 1 wheel thru a corner.

I'm off to bed now .

Gutted about your lsd :(

Is it covered for competition use?

  • Author

Yea covered for motorsport use so no problem hopefully, if not I'll get credit card company involved and get my money back as not fit for use etc

Do you need a carbon fibre bootlid by any chance?  ;)

Do you need a carbon fibre bootlid by any chance?  ;)

lol would love one but at the moment I need to pay off my credit card more :(

next phase now it is proven is to rid the shell of everything we don't need and get the weight bias a bit more central, then more power, more brakes, etc lol

small update, I sent the wavetrac back to Regal autosport as they are the Uk's authorized repair place, they were a bit reluctant at first to believe there was anything wrong but once I had a chat to california where they are made that was sorted out, They suspected I had run incorrect oil in the gearbox , which I had not, wavetrac said use factory fill so I did..

They then changed their mind and suggested the oil was getting overheated in the gearbox and this was causing problems, they have replaced all the internal carbon shims and springs free of charge and I should have it back tomorrow with luck.

While I have the gearbox out I am thinking of messing with ratio's again as it is a bit low geared now but I am unsure if I should keep the close gearing i have and just up the final drive ratio to 3.31 or try the 5 speed tdi box as it is with the wider gaps between gears..

also I need to sort water spray onto intercooler next too.

next rally is hopefully down ampeney near cirencester on 5th april.

more of a reminder for me than anything else

ratio's here http://zelek.com/diagram_charts/diagramlist.htm

speed calc thingy here http://johnmaherracing.com/calculators/gear-ratio-calculator/

tyre size calc here http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator

I think by fitting the TDI cwp into the gear ratio's I have now I will get a better spread throughout and gain a 120mph top speed

it gains me 5mph in 2nd gear at 4k rpm and takes 3rd to 62mph at 4k which is a bit better.

Ok guys, all change again lol.....

Now I have found that I Kaaz make a lsd for the 02J box and I can have one by next weekend.... :)

So I have bitten the bullet and sold the wavetrac and bought the KAAZ which is what I wanted before really, I'm not saying the wavetrac is not any good as it certainly does a very good job, but it does seem like it it may cause me issues with the type of use I am giving it and I really want something I can fit and forget for a while until it's due servicing etc.

It seems the way the wavetrac works causes a lot of heat in some circumstances and I really could do without fitting a gearbox cooler too.

I will update again once I have more shiny expensive metal to show you :)

LOL I can write more now top gear has finished..

The Kaaz is a 1.5 way plate lsd which would be a terrible thing in a road car for everyday use unlike the wavetrac but should hopefully give no problems and stay pretty consistent in use once it is bedded in.

Also I replaced the osr door with another in the same colour off ebay as it was pretty mangled after the meeting with the scooby lol, and next up while I wait for the Kaaz to land from Japan I am intending to sort the intercooler water spray, I just won a tank and pump off a scooby sti which I will fit inside the car somewhere, I just need somebody clever with electronics to make a small timer switch to pulse it on and off I think, and need to find what water spray jets guys are using to do the job..

I am going to see how the engine pulls with the revised gearing and then maybe see about a bit more power, maybe a pd 150 turbo? just to get a bit more of a shove thruout the rpm range really.

any thoughts guys?

Ok Exciting shiny bits arrived in the post last week :)'DSC_1162_zpse0f01cb6.jpg

one KAAZ plate lsd unit, I'm hoping this will be the real answer to traction and reliability, so I had a think on the gear ratio's and decided to try the std fabia tdi ratio's as they will spread the speed per gear a bit more and hopefully make it easier to use that torque more.

I had a 02R fabia tdi box that had a dodgy 3rd gear so stripped that to repair and fit the lsd into it, only to find it was a later box and had the smaller diameter crownwheel fitted which won't go on my diff :(..DSC_1166_zpsdc3753f9.jpg

so after trying a few options I had to use the cwp and main shaft from a 02J octy tdi box which meant a lot of work shimming it up and changing bearings over.

It's in now and after following the bedding in procedure for the plates it seems to work fine and certainly stops it spinning up (I'm still on soft moulded slicks lol)

next rally is on 5th april so not far away now, I have water spray to sort next along with fitting the egr delete and cat delete (to try and lose some lag).

Nice  B)

Wheres the next event?

Down ampeney mate

 http://www.cheltmc.com/rally.htm

by cirencester  so local sh for me maybe pushing my luck here but hoping for a top 10 finish as I managed to get my old felicia up to 8th there a few years back and the venue should suit the tdi more as it's more flowing. can't wait now after tonite's little drive

Im a little lost as to what gearbox your running now lol.. but if u fancy a spare 5 speed with no faults that came on my 1.9tdi ATD fabia then pm me for a price.. im converting to 6 speed so you can have the shafts/ starter/ linkage etc if u wanted it? Bone dry + i put brand new genuine gearbox oil it when i put my clutch in back end of last year n dun tops 1000miles since then.. located in Wakefield :)
