Are Skoda Insurance talking BS?

Featured Replies

I've reluctantly taken the 7 day insurance to get my car taxed and during the the process they asked me where I park and do I park in more than a single place when I go to work.

Now most of the time I have to drive in because of the time of day that I work, but at least one week per month I get the chance to use the train into work, now I've always considered that to be included in the normal policy that I take out which is S,D & P Inc commuting.

Skoda Insurance say that is not the case and I need to take out business use insurance!

WTF are they on about? I'm not a business man or orifice worker so how come that I need to have business use insurance after all of these years to park my car in the nearest railway station.

Any ideas or are they just talking BS as per usual to hike the premium?

Driving to a train station, IMO, does not constitute use in connection with the insurer's business (I think is the term they Skoda Insurance would probably use) and I think if you were to go legal, you would probably have a few people agreeing with that too.

Go Compare's desciption of Business Use:

Business use – Includes social use and also covers the designated drivers in connection with their jobs (e.g. driving to different sites or offices, and prearranged meetings away from the normal place of work).

I really can't see how driving to a train station to park your car is classed as business use.

It sounds a bit over-zealous to me.

Does to me too. Just seems that they may be trying to sting me for more money.

What makes me wonder what they're upto is when they gave me a quote for the car (which is oddly valid for 6 months, when most insurers only do 28 days in advance) of £534, yet when pushed they dropped it to £407, a drop of £127!

I don't think I'll be taking up their offer unless my existing insurers really do rack up their prices.

They are talking bs! When you're driving to the train station, you are still commuting to one single place of work.

To be safe, as I sometimes have to travel to various offices around the country, I added full business insurance on both our cars this time, I think the premium increase was all of £5 a year on each. Not worth the hassle and arguements for the sake of a fiver.

I've got business use on my policy with Bell as I do use my car for work sometimes. Did not cost me anything to add it either, so not all companies charge.

The thing is I'm not travelling to/from multiple offices, I travel from the station which gives me the best travel option into Guildford, it's not as if one day I was travelling to Woking, the next Waterloo or Portsmouth.

It's just one location from a local station to avoid sitting in the traffic in Guildford as it can take an hour to get to/from the car park to/from home which is 6½ miles away, by train it takes 10 mins to get to the station & 10 mins into town & v.v.

No hassle or stress!

I've got business use with direct line and it was no extra charge but when I tried to add business with Hastings they wanted nearly £50 extra maybe that was admin fees as we'll for changing the policy...

Ask them to define "commuting" ;)

It's all commuting whether you go to a station or all the way to the office. Business use is travelling to different sites, meetings, going out on training, etc on behalf of the business/organisation.

I use one of two stations (Clandon or Gomshall) to travel to ONE central point, namely Guildford mainline station, that's it, if they want me to go elsewhere then they provide transport in the form of a taxi, bus or another train.

I'm not wasting my fuel on my company.

They (well vw branded) quoted us £900 and when pushed dropped to £500.

Our renewal with direct line, after price matching against Aviva, was £310 with hire car plus (£30)

Just goes to prove a point.

I wonder how many people are so gullible to just accept the quote that they are given and pay it, without shopping around.

Still I won't be taking up their offer as far as I can see it, not with them trying to say that I need to have business insurance for parking at a station to get into town. I'm sorry but that's complete & utter BS.

I guess the insurer is just being over-cautious or maybe that's one of their restrictions.

I think there is some confusion.

I think the question they asked was something like "do you always go to the same place when you go to work".

In your case the answer is 'yes' but they have taken your answer mentioning different stations as 'no'.
