Buying a used Skoda with DSG gearbox for taxi purposes..

I am thinking of joining the taxi trade. An automatic is the obvious choice for me...I hear good things about Skodas and their DSG gearboxes....and bad!!!

Anyway im thinking of buying a second hand automatic skoda for taxing and was just wondering if there is anyone else there in the same situation? i.e Skoda+DSG+Taxi)

 

What are your experiences?

Same for me, the DSG is a dream in traffic.

Make sure you keep up to gearbox oil + filter changes.

Make sure the oil changes are done by a company that knows VAG + has VAG com etc or a main dealer.

Under/ over filling the DSG box are the cause of 90% of all DSG problems.

The temperature of the gearbox oil has to be 37° when setting the level up. This can be read using VAS machines or VAG com etc.

Oil + filter every 40k

Cant remeber if manufacturers spec is oil every 40k + oil + filter every 80k

But for the sake of a fiver id get the filter done everytime

I worked in a main dealer (VW) and they charged 0.9Time Units for Labour at £86+ vat per hour.

+ 6 litres of oil (uses just over 5L)

+ oil filter.

Dont know how much these cost as im a techy not parts lol. But im guessing it will be cheaper at a VAG "specialist" ;)

VAG = VW. Audi. Seat. Skoda ;)

Most people think it stands for

Volkswagen Audi Group

But (according to one of my tutors at VW head office) its Volkswagen then 2 german words i cant remember lol.

Most of the bad press comes from the 7 speed DSG I think.

 

Anything with a 1.9 or 2.0 diesel will have the 6 speed box. Bit stronger.

 

There's a member in Ireland using a 2.0 TDI DSG as a taxi with over 650,000kms on it with nothing but oil changes and a DMF replacement.

Hi, it would be interesting to understand what this statement is based on ... since you seem to talk about all DGS boxes in general. Most issues today seem to be related to the 7 speed DQ200 with a dry clutch setup so here the oil level should not matter. Or am I wrong?

... and as an add-on I can mention that here in Sweden the taxi companies complain wildly about all the DSG models but they are saved by the warranty they get when leasing their cars for their taxi business. This has driven the cost for Volkswagen Group to a point where they have stopped selling certain models and gearbox combinations to taxi businesses in the city regions due to their extensive start-stop-start driving habits.

Nope 6 speeds **** up to ;)

We have replaced a good few mechatronics (DSG control units) on 6 speeds 2.0tdi + 1.9tdi. Mostly in warranty (but if out would have cost over £1k..

+ the "jerky gears" which can be due to incorrect oil level after somewhere else has serviced the DSG gearbox. But can also be due to needing a manufacturers "update" of the Mechatronics followed by an extensive roadtest with the diagnostics computer (VAS or Odis) plugged in telling you to hold it in certain gears between certain rev ranges for various lengths of time. The last one i did that required the long road test took me 3 hours lol :D

The 7 speed have similar problems but are also more likely to need completely changing.

The moral of the story is if you want reliability.... stick with a manual ;)

Hahaa, been down the V70 path too, it was ... boring :kiss: !!! And it left me on the side of the road a couple of times so not a completely trouble free car either.

so as long as the oil is topped up and looked after the gearbox should be fine.

 

But im intending to buy a car thats second hand...so may or may not be out of warrenty???

Good question actually...anyone?

In my experience there is around the same amount of problems with manual + DSG gearboxes.

The difference is the price to fix them.

Also there are alot more manuals on the road so in terms of the percentage of breakdowns to the number produced the manuals are more reliable. Most problems with manuals were caused by the dual mass flywheel falling to bits and going through the gearbox casing so not technically gearbox related.

Dont get me wrong its not just a VAG problem. BMW + Merc also suffer with reliability issues on there "semi-auto" gearboxes

3k for a DSG gearbox.

It is quite clear from the above that Matt knows what he is talking about with regard to the DSG box.

 

So I would like to try to advantage of his experience and ask a question.

 

I too suffer from "jerky gear" change syndrome problem, and would like to known how to go about approaching my local dealer.

 

I have reported this problem to the dealer and been told that as no fault code is shown when testing there is nothing they can/will do about it. I would like to be able to approach the dealer, with as many facts as possible, to indicate that there are a number of updates/amendments that are available to bring the DSG up to the latest spec, should the dealer be prepared to do so.

You indicated that the 7 speed DSG has similar problems but often requires changing. When they change the box is there anything different with the new box that will prevent the same faults happening again.

 

The DSG fitted to my Octy is the 7 speed DQ200 and the car is now out of warranty and has never been outside the dealer network for any service work
