What Diesel?

We'll beg to differ as my personal experience on both petrol and diesel says they aren't any better.

I use shell regular then add millars. The shell is 1p a litre cheaper by me than both tescos and sainsburys so that part is a no brainer. I choose to add millars which adds 2p a litre. My vRS seems to run better as a result. I have had very few dpf regens in the 6k I've done so far that I'm aware of and average circa 49 mpg actual.

Buy a supermarket own brand item and it will invariably be of lesser quality than the equivelent branded one.

Buy what you prefer. Makes no difference to me at all!

We will indeed. Your petrol and diesel cars must be different to mine!

Same here.

Works derv will run on anything but really well on Sainsbury's city diesel for running and mpg.

Our Touran hates Tesco and shell and runs like a bag of nails on either. It's not bad on Sainsbury's, but prefers BP standard diesel for running and mpg.

Our petrol cars equally had a mix. Mk1 20v elegance liked Total best, mk 2 loved Tesco best.

Honest there is a difference in my vans only done tesco versus bp,jet and We do about 40 k in each van per year so can makes massive difference I don't understand why !but tried many times over the years

A transit costs £100 ish to fill should get 400 miles "do drive them hard" but with tesco fuel is about 350 that's big difference and is on an 08 plate 115bhp with 170k on the clock also a 11plate 140bhp with 75k on clock

I run my car on shell, as I runs smoother and I get more mpg so it works out cheaper than SM fuel. But the next guys car could work the complete opposite, so as said above use the fuel that works best.

Thank you chunkstar for providing real life evidence in support !!

Here we go! Yes supermarket fuels meet the EU specs and there is nothing wrong with supermarket fuel, but they DO NOT have the patented additives that premium brands add, after the refining process. And it those additives that make the difference and make premium brand fuel BETTER.

Blah blah blah, blah blah blah.

Blah blah blah, blah blah blah.

Sort of juvenial reply I'd expect from a troll...

Eh? You insinuating I'm a fictional mythical creature?

I always use premium brand fuel, namely Shell v power diesel and petrol. I stopped using SM fuel years ago when a car I bought wouldn't run properly on the SM fuel.

However I filled my old Yeti with Asda diesel last year before a run to London via Milton Keynes and the consumption was absolutely dreadful. I averaged 33mpg to Milton Keynes and had to refuel there. The car averaged 41-45 mpg on a motorway run as did my first Yeti on the same journey many times before. After refilling at Milton Keynes with Shell diesel the Yeti's consumption figure on a reset Maxidot was 40 mpg, with the same speed and driving style, a huge difference.

People will argue forever over anything, especially car related stuff, eg Skoda's are crap! We all know the truth on this forum but try telling other people who still think that today's Skodas are like the pre VAG buyout cars. It's the same as petrol and oils, which is now ongoing on this thread.

Supermarket fuel is used as a loss leader to draw the customer into the store, much the same way as cheap bread or milk. The fuel will always meet the EU or ISO standards or whichever is used but, as a previous poster stated you are paying for the patented additives which are added to the premium fuels. If you are happy buying supermarket fuel fine, I wouldn't criticise you for buying it and I wouldn't try to persuade you to change to a premium fuel, it boils down to personal choice and preference, you pays your money etc etc and I prefer to buy v power, that's my choice, and if you don't like my choice, so what, it's f*** all to do with anyone else how I spend my money. Let's argue about which is the best phone Apple or Samsung, just for a change.

updated myself with the thread content, and back to the football.....

Apple :-)

Android. ..

Apple :-)

Surprise.

Stuarted I am not going to get into an argument with you. It is futile, and I am sure even if I took the trouble to post proof here you would still not believe it. So I'm not going to waste my time. You have your opinions and I have mine, let''s leave it there.

The Earth is flat and that is a definite fact, because I say it is.

The reason why I do not waste time in bothering to prove this is not because I cannot, but because you would still not believe me even if I did.

But supermarket fuels aren't cheaper than branded ones, at least not in the NW they're not so if a supermarket is selling it at a loss how can a big name then sell it for the same price but with added additives and not make an even bigger loss?...

Some people notice a difference, some people don't notice any differences and some think that they notice a difference but are not really sure. Excluding the actual fuel there are many other variables at play. What car is used, driving style (relaxed, aggressive), journey type (town, motorway, school run), weather etc. Some fuels (additives)  may perform better than others within the same vehicle, but the roles may be reversed if another verhicle, driver etc is used.

Agree completely.

In my own case, I have never noticed the slightest difference.  There is far greater random variation in the fuel consumption between one fill-up and the next, even when using the same brand of fuel, than there ever is when changing from one brand of fuel to another.
