Is that yet another 'definite fact'?

Well you have presented the evidence so it must be true

You don't have to post on here.

If you think people are really trolling then report them, that's what the mods are for.

I have as much right to post on here as you do. There are some excellent and mature people here but like some forums there are a few who aren't. Not worth my time reporting them. The mods should police the various threads anyway.

You lot sound like my kids.

No stop arguing or no PlayStation for the whole weekend.

I'll go to my room and play with my x-Box then....

That's not how the system works. There are relatively few mods and lots of threads and posts, so they rely on people reporting posts and threads which may breach the rules. They don't get paid, they have other things to do (allegedly).

Yet another moronic Briskoda-Troll ......

Please play nicely. It's OK for people not to agree with you simply because your experience of fuels differs from someone elses.

As I posted, even identical cars under identical conditions tested exactly the same way will give different results regarding which fuel is best.

I have no problem whatsoever with people having a different opinion to my own. What I have a problem with is when those other people come up with stupid comments such as "flat earth" and "blah blah blah" etc. - hence my troll comment. With regards to the fuel debate if someone thinks that supermarket fuels are better for their car then that's fine. They also need to accept that others such as me and others prefer to use branded fuels.

You have an ignore list which you can add users to if you don't want to see their posts.

I have no problem with reading posts from users who have a different opinion to my own, so long as they debate in an adult and constructive fashion, so I do not wish to add anyone to an ignore list.

Of they are trolling stop feeding them then!

Yes, I think I'll just ignore them....

I see very little difference between brands or supermarket, nothing that can be attributed solely to the fuel anyway.

What I have found is Miller's improves mpg and makes the engine feel more powerful. Probably all imagined though.

Almost forgot, Android.

Personally I prefer Esso, BP or shell over supermarkets but to be honest only put Esso and BP in Vin so far with no noticeable difference between them but he is still running in.

All of the major Brands and Supermarkets source their fuel from the same refineries. The fuel is exactly the same bar additives which are "added later". There are only about a dozen refineries within the whole of the UK, so most depots and garages are supplied by their closest refinery. Pay more for Shell, BP, Esso etc if you like, but you are only paying for additives which are not really necessary.

edit: The Esso Fawley refinery provides 20% of the UK's fuel. Esso owned and Esso branded station provide only 10% the UK's fuel, so where does the other 10% go? The answer is that Esso and other refineries sell to anyone and everyone.

Correct, a friends Kia however will not run on Diesel from Tesco, it misfires. No idea why!

On my 150 O3, I have definitely noticed a lower mpg from Shell Fuelsave Diesel than any others (has also had Tesco, Total and BP). I am wondering if the engine doesn't like Shells additives. To be truthful though I have no idea why.

I've been using mainly supermarket fuel for the last 10k, can't get anywhere near Tim's mpg figures! I'd convinced myself that was mainly down to the fact our commutes are different, ie Tim has more mileage on A roads whereas I am on the motorway more. Having read this, I'm going to try Shell for the next 10k or so as an experiment, I log my fill ups on Fuelly, so this will be an interesting experiment, will let you know how I get on in 5 months!

Hi Matt

If you get better mpg on Shell tell everyone. if you don't just tell me..... :-) ( No smilies available on iPad for some reason). To be honest I think the difference between thee and me is I'm up and out at 06:00hrs every morning before there is a lot of traffic about and my daily commute is mainly steady speed open roads. The motorway ends literally a couple of hundred metres from the security gate where I work.

My fuel consumption is not so good now the colder weather has arrived, but I don't bother checking it every time, the novelty has worn off!!

The only way to know whether different fuels affect your cars mpg differently is to try them all (as Matt Pez will do) over extended periods. Some may see benefits from certain additves whilst others may see losses or no benefits whatsoever. Each car, driver, commute is different, so what is good for one is not necessarily good for all.

With my Subaru's and Cosworth I definately noticed a performance and smoothness difference with 100 RON fuels (the STI IV would have died without it), but for all of my normally aspirated petrols and turbo-diesels any difference between fuels has been imperceptable to me.

The answer is not black and white, and no one fuel will be best for everyone. If it was, every garage would use the same formula..

Undoubtably with highly tuned engines, such as your Cosworth or Subaru you definitely benefit from high octane fuel, as I do in my 911 which wherever possible I use Shell V Power. When we were on holiday last spring out of desperation I had no option but to use Morrisons petrol, the fuel consumption dropped at least 5 mpg, although the engine ran fine. I haven't tried using supermarket fuel in the Octavia as we have a Shell station near where I live and another one right outside the security gate where I work. I don't use V Power diesel in it though.

I was talking about normal diesel not v power but honestly makes about 50 -60 miles different ,using motorways sitting at 80 ish ,to me it's not good when you do 40 k A year x4 vans that's lots of miles ,so don't do it now ,personal vehicles I don't either .

Red.

You may get a visit from the RFTU if you are unlucky and they can take the car as well.  In Holland it has a green marker.

The diesel VRS doesn't need anything other than bog standard fuel, if you experience issues then by all means switch to the premium stuff. My petrol has been running on Tesco 95 Ron and it runs perfectly fine. My Fabia VRS however misfired on anything but vPower

On a Fri evening, to avoid the M1 road to hell northbound J26-31, I take a slightly extended route to the east of Nottm, and then head north via Ollerton and Worksop, a mixture of A roads and country lanes, and the mpg shoots up to just over the 60 mpg mark, an increase of at least 5mpg over using the motorway the rest of the week. I generally leave home about 7am, then leave the office between 5.00 - 5.30pm so hitting the Nottm rush hour, especially in the evening.

Last car, Renault Scenic, certainly preferred branded fuel, noticed about 5-7mpg difference and occasional poor starting when using Asda fuel compared to the Shell I normally used.

Present car, Ford S-Max definitely prefers Asda fuel, exactly the reverse of the Scenic, lower mpg and poor starting on the Shell stuff.

If and when Octy arrives I will experiment and see!

My experience with a 54 plate Altea 2.0 TDi I had was, after using mainly supermarket diesel, I had a few problems with flaps on the intake side becoming damaged with sooty deposits, causing a right nuisance. I have mainly run my Roomster TDi on branded fuel and not experienced any issues like that. Okay, 2 different cars, but it kinda put me off supermarket diesel. can't say i've really found any difference MPG wise.

My Octy will be petrol this time, but I will try to use branded fuel in that, as i think the likelihood of beneficial additives might help maintenance wise in the long run.

its personal choice really.

.

I completley agree - everyone is entitled to a preference and has the right to express that preference.

However that is rather different from simply announcing that something is "a definite fact", without offering any evidence.
