Retread Tyres

Hi Guys

I am looking at "Retread" tyres and wonder if any one has any thoughts on them; Longevity, performance, noise etc.....

 

I need 4x 205/55/R16's and retreads have come up at arround £35 each.

 

Now, i have had "Remoulds" many years ago fitted to my Range Rover 2.5 diesel. Driving around 60mph for majority of its life, these remoulds lasted nigh on 8 years.

 

But i have heard of stories of remoulds peeling off.

Retreads are supposed to be much better. But are they?

They are regularly used on Buses and lorry's and people say there has been vast improvements on standards and quality of the carcases they use.

 

Any thoughts welcome..

Its not something I would do. Its the only part of the car connected with the ground. I don't touch remoulds or used tyres (and yes, if the tyres don't look brand new on a used car I change them).

These days they need to meet high standards to be sold. They are ok but don't last as long and sometimes have poor wet grip performance.

 

Fine for road use but don't use them on a racetrack unless you're drifting.

Still debateing whether i should go and try them. I'm more curious than anything. If i do get some i'll give a review of how they feel grip wise and how long they last

Retreads are remolds. I have had bad experiences (delamination if sidewall at speed) but you may fare better. The tyres on buses and lorries might be remolds but are commonly "regrooved". That is, made with thicker rubber under the tread. Once "bald" they can be regrooved to make them legal again. Once fully worn they are replaced new or remolded.

TBH, I would use a remold/retread as a spare but never otherwise.

One issue will be the correct e and s markings on the sidewalls. You could end up with a tyre that works fine but is illegal and an MOT fail.

Good point there thank you. My tyres do need a speed rate "V" if these retreads donot come with that then they will not be fitted, thanks

They might look ok and have good tread depth but you have no way of knowing if the carcase is damaged.

Better option would be to buy budget tyres from Kwikfit or similar

i'll wander down to National tyres on m0nday. they've quoted £280 for 4 Avons.

I wouldn't touch re-moulds - along with your brakes, they are all you have to stop you ploughing through a hedge!

I don't use them, remoulds or otherwise

i use to use retreads on my 16v golf years ago

they have to meet safety standards

they land jumbo jets on retreads so they must be ok

i never had any problems years ago with retreads and use to drive car reasonably hard

they wore out quite quickly but you get what you pay for!

have you had a look at blackcircles and my tyres for a decent price as your size tyre should be around £45/50 for new

So the remould companies test every tyre that they use?

They CAN check the outside of the tyre but I doubt they have the equipment to check the steel banding embedded in the side wall.

As for Kwikfit, they do supply a budget tyre which isn't a remould and it's not that much more money.

Checking the steel banding would just be a quick xray. Take maybe a minute to go round and check for cracks etc.

I would only ever fit new tyres to my car because no one can really prove what has happened to them previously if they are not new. If you want to risk it thats your choice personally I've found previously when I had to use remouds because I couldn't afford to put new tyres on that they were false economy because they didn't do anywhere near the miles a new tyre would.

Why use remoulds and not Falken, Hankook etc which are pretty good budget brands... pay a little extra, its your insurance excess/NCD on the line and in an extreme situation your/your families or someone else's life depending on those tyres.

Retreads should be banned and for 40 you can just get infinity or something if you do have a deathwish, t1rs are 50 each and they have seen me safely round most of Europe, the nurburgring and spa, sure its an extra 60 on the 4 but that vs your safety and the increase in insurance premium when remoulds kill you

Could you refresh my memory please? what sort of tread do they have? any grip is bad weather?

Its so long since I had need for any I bet the price has risen from 1/9d for three

Generally, I buy new, premium tyres. If I'm on a budget, I use part worns, so long as they're a good brand and I've looked over them well, I wouldn't use a remould/retread though.

Only ever tried remoulds once as a poor hard up student - they quickly started to de-laminate at speeds over 60. Never again.

 

Like most on here, I would only ever fit new tyres now - you just can't be certain of a used tyre's history.
