DSG hill start slow to release.

Featured Replies

Has anyone else noticed that it can be a tad slow to release after being parked for a while or overnight.

I'm finding that it takes about 5s to release before pulling away, is the length of time it holds adjustable via the VCDS software, because it's a little irritating.

My hill hold doesn't like to release unless you're pretty aggressive with the accelerator and clutch

The op is talking about a DSG equipped car.... no clutch. (No clutch pedal anyway!)

Mine has no problems pulling away on hills.  In fact you could say that all automatic cars have 'hill start'  they cannot physically roll backwards due to the gearbox.

The problem is mainly after being left overnight, it doesn't happen if it has been used during the day or during driving for a normal hill start, which is odd.

Maybe it's just because it's new, I don't really know.

Is the hill hold on the DSG different to the manual as that only holds for a max of 2 seconds but should also release as soon as you apply power....

The problem with mine is that it seems to snatch when I apply power to go away rather than just releasing smoothly.

Maybe a job for the dealer to sort.

The point I was trying to make (maybe not very clearly) was that hill hold tends not to release quickly unless you're aggressive (in my case anyway) so even in a dsg if you're gentle on the accelerator it may not release quick enough.

Mines releases straights away, slight bit of throttle and it just lets off, as designed.

I'm not sure from your description if you are really talking about the Hill Hold.

Are you describing moving the car on the flat, or on a hill, after a period of non-use?  In forward or reverse?

I park on a hill overnight, when I come to drive off there's a considerable pause before the brakes will release and if I use power to drive away I will get a snatch, rather than a smooth pull away.

I've also noticed a little "bump" between 1st & 2nd when its cold as well. I think I might have to have a little chat with dealer to see if there's something amiss.

The bump between first and second could be an issue, I don't get it in my 1.4TSI.

Does hill hold break all four wheels? If it is first thing, could the problem be a sticking hand break rather then hill hold?

Does hill hold break all four wheels?  Hill Hold operates numerous times a week on my car (I live in the Cotswolds) and it hasn't broken a wheel yet.  But it does operate the BRAKES on all 4 wheels.

Mine occasionally does it when left overnight but my experience has been a sticky handbrake. The noisy change from 1st to 2nd is a common issue with DSG's right across the VAG group. I'd book it in the dealers

I am getting exactly the same problem on my new DSG VRs TSi. Needs a fair bit of throttle to get started on a hill when the engine is still a bit cold, and after a bit of a delay it takes off with a big lurch. I'd say the hill-hold on the brakes is too slow to release. If I use the manual hand brake it is absolutely fine and gentle/smooth off the line. I had a DSG diesel Passat with autohold and this had no problems at all in the same place. I will be taking this up with the dealer.

Hmmm... So none of your guys deactivate the Stop/Start & the TCS prior to flooring the brake and throttle simultaneously before releasing the brake ?

I have no problems with my hill hold or 1st to 2nd gear change bump maybe, I got a good one although, the tyres do seem to be wearing slightly unevenly, more so on the front if anything.

I've noticed it aswell. I'm thinking maybe having a poke around VCDS to adjust the hill-holder a bit, but will probably just take it to the dealer first. The worst is when SS is activated and on a slight hill, then even a gentle throttle push is causing it to get off the line with at big "jerky" movement. A big discomfort.

Hey guys, was there any conclusion to this? I've just bought a 65plate VRS and have this issue when cold, either rockets up the incline in reverse or sometimes starts then hesitates as if the clutch has been depressed. Then change from R to Do can sometimes feel temperamental. When all warm everything better although the whole gearbox doesn't feel as smooth as the MK2 VRS (unless I'm just picking on it because of cold issue)

Anyway, thoughts from those that had this issue appreciated

Thanks

I've found out where the problem is and to whom it occurs. Gotten me frustrated for years (Alfa Romeo has that much better engineered) driving Octavia in parallel.

If you are learned to release clutch slightly before pressing the throttle to start, you will have the problem. Actually HH has a timeout of 3 seconds by default, I believe. UNLESS, you slightly touch throttle, then it releases brakes.

So, learn to touch throttle a bit quicker upon clutch (or brake on DSG) release, and it will loosen brakes at that very moment.

Thanks, I seem to have mastered the HH surge, I'm still getting an intermittent jumpy start when engaging D from R when cold but no codes according to Dealer which appears to be the only information mechanics use these days :( will keep monitoring.
