Mine have gone on today. 6Jx16 ET48 steelies and Conti Winter Contact TS850 in 205/55R16. Looks odd after 18s, now I need some wheel trims. Anyone got any suggestions for a cheap set that don't look too naff?

There isn't much caliper clearance at the front on a CR150, I doubt 15s would fit if anyone was thinking of it!

I got my Nokian WR D3 205/55/16 on steel wheels put on the car by my local tyre fitter last Thursday- my backs gone at the moment.  I can now get up my road and into my drive without any worries.

Got a bit of snow on Friday, fortunately it did not stick.

andyvee I got my wheel trims from Euro Carparts  link £14.99. I also got a set of wheel bags off of Ebay.

Cheers, I have a wheel tree in the garage so don't need bags. Might get some Xmas lights on it LOL.

I'll check out the trims at ECP.

Is there any chance for a foto of this combination (I mean TS850 205/55 & 6x16'' rims)? I have recently bought such tires and now I have no idea what to do - give myself and option to install chains (using 6'' rims) or better look and tire fit (6,5'' is recommended for 205/55 tire). I am a bit affraid that tire can be a little bit squeezed after instaling it on 6'' rim (my tires have FR fature). If you can take some pictures this will help mi a lot.

Thank you & cheers from Poand

Now running mine with winters fitted to VAG 6Jx16 ET48 winter steel rims and they seem fine, will try take a picture when I'm off work in a day or so.

6J is an approved rim width for 205 tyres according to Skoda

Need the speed rating so fitted 225/40 R18 92W XL winter tyres from Vredestein (Wintrac Xtreme). Used them lots of times before on various vehicles, very stable on snow even at high autobahn speeds.  They are CHF 150 a corner so not too bad.

Skoda/VAG winter steel rims 6Jx16 ET 48 with the matching Octy III 16" Nordic winter wheel trims.

Gdswiss, where did you order these from in Switzerland? Online or from a local garage?

I'm currently looking for a good place to buy a set of 17" Winter Wheels & tyres for when my vRS arrives.

The best places I've found so far are internet sites in France but I'd prefer to buy them in the country to avoid any customs problems.

I must be a naughty boy then running my ET50 6.5J steels off the previous car along with 205/60 R16 tyres........

....3 weeks in now and all still in one piece! :giggle:

Waiting for appropriate setting to take a piccy, but thankfully the red and black theme through the car exterior makes the black steels with caddy covers look better than one might initially think.

Hi Gabbo,

ordered from reifendirekt.ch (which are shipped from Germany with all Zoll charges paid) but there are others in CH too. Quick google should sort you with the best price.

Thanks for the reply gdswiss.

I'd tried ReifenDirekt already but doesn't recognise the vRS when you select the pkw type and it says there are no wheels available this car.

The best prices I've found so far are at pneus-online-suisse.ch but they have a much better selection of wheels on the French version of the site :(

I'll keep looking...

My car is a MkII but this seems a more suitable thread for my comments than any threads on the MkII forum at the moment.

When I recently bought my 4x4 Octavia estate it had excellent brand-new TS850 winter tyres, fitted on the original Skoda 15" alloy wheels.

These wheels are a bit corroded so if/when I buy a set of summer tyres, I may well buy a another set of alloys for the summer and keep the old, corroded alloy ones for winter rather than buy a set of new steel winter wheels.

The dilemma is - which alloys?  I would probably stay at 15" but not sure whether to look for 6" or 6.5" width.  Since I am buyng tyres as well, I have looked at the tyre+wheel prices from Mytyres.  They offer a choice of several rims at prices ranging from from £47 to £79 each:

http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/komplettrad.pl

Does anyone have any experience of any of these rims please, or can anyone suggest a better / cheaper place to buy a set?  Any idea what Skoda wheels cost, new or second-hand?  My preference is always for the plainest / easiest-to-clean wheels I can find.  I rather hate the look of over-ornate wheels with curly spokes or lattice-work or very narrow, difficult-to-clean crevices or gaps between the spokes!

As for the best tyres purely for the summer, that is a whole different question.  Even if only used in the warmer summer weather, I guess comfort, wet grip, wet braking, low rolling resistance and long life would be good to have.  I don't need sporting characteristics - I've got a sports car for that.  My Skoda is intended merely as a comfortable, reliable, economical, versatile workhorse.

Stuarted, most of the tyre websites will now only offer you wheels or tyres which are approved for your car model and year of build.

I don't think the width of the wheel is so important as long as the tyre size you want is compatible.

You can see compatible rim widths and tyre widths here:

http://www.yokohamatire.com/tires_101/customizing/rim_wheel_width/

This site is very useful to compare existing wheels and tyres with the new ones you are considering.

For the Octavia i believe many people choose the Dezent TD wheels because they are TUV approved and standard wheels from the Golf:

To be honest, I like the fact that it stays on the original 18 inch wheels. I looked at the cost of switching to 17 inch for winter and the additional cost for the wheels. AMAG want about chf 1'800 for a complete set on Dunlops. 1'200 more than just buying the Verdestein tyres so despite the fact that we switch tyres twice a year (mit lagerungskosten), I can do this for 10 years and still pay less overall than a separate set of winter pneus/wheels. Plus the tyres get balanced twice a year so wear should be a lot less.  :-)

Thanks Gabbo - good useful stuff.

You make a very good point..!

I was also quoted 1800CHF from AMAG for the winter wheels with Dunlops so started looking for cheaper winter wheels.

I went to 3 dealers here & none of them would even give me a key-ring on top of the price for the car (i was hoping for winter wheels included)

Originally I was hoping I could fit a 16" wheel as the alloy/steel wheels & tyres are much cheaper.

When I realised that I could only drop to 17" I didn't concider just staying at 18" and just changing the tyres.

There's no real difference between 17" & 18" tyre prices & as you say it means the tyres, wheels & bolts get professionally checked every 6 months...

The saving of 500-600Chf will take around 5 years to pay off when only paying to swap the tyres twice a year,

EBay item id 161058116550 for example. At least £100 cheaper than the same thing in the UK, and cheaper than 18" winter tyres, which I wouldn't want anyway as 205 is the widest I want to go. If 195 on 15s were approved for the 2 litre diesel I would be fitting these as they are even cheaper.

I'm running 195s on 15" steelies on my 2 litre Golf TDI , plenty of room over the calipers and this is their third winter.

It's early to post about winter tyres but as I've now got my 4x4 Octy I'll be getting rid of the Forester and the snow tyres on the spare wheels which got me to thinkiing..... I can't put snow tyres on the Octy as it's a company car and they won't allow it, so what is the recommendation? Chains or socks? I've read elswhere that socks don't last but have never trised them.

And of course it'll need two sets even though the manual says to fit chains to only the front wheels.

Why on earth would they stop you putting winters on (or even know)?

Socks are ok. Got a set for my Passat before I bought a set of winters last year.

I've used them twice and they're a little bit frayed but they got me off of my estate, ungritted, and up a fairly steep incline onto the main road that was gritted. That's what they're good for. I wouldn't use them expecting to do 30mile trip, but they ARE good for short trips on ungritted surfaces and for emergencies. And DONT use them on any amount of Tarmac!

FWIW, my vRS will be a company lease so I'll be buying a set for it as, like you, I m not allowed to fit winter tyres.

I've been argiung with fleet last week about winters too. If you drive lots of miles they are cost neutral as summers wear faster in winter as the rubber freezes. As above socks will get you to the main road.

Order socks NOW as the price will go up and the postie may not be able to get down your street when it snows!

Hi

I am new to this, thread.

Do you really need to change all 4 wheels to winter tyres? As most of us has front drive Skoda's, would it be possible to change just the front wheels to winter tyres??

I know this is a new thing in the UK to change to winter tyres, but do we need to change all 4 wheels??

Steve
