Columbus Satnav Disk

Featured Replies

Picking up my 2009 Octy vRS on Monday and want to get the latest maps for it. When I looked around the car in the glovebox was the DVD case for the maps which were version 5.

A quick google and I believe latest version is version 10, is this correct?

Secondly a few years ago a friend of mine bought a Passat and then bought the latest map DVD but he couldn't update as he needed some inbetween versions to update the firmware, so in the end had to buy an older DVD update and then update to the latest maps and then sell on the older maps. Is this the same on the Octy or is there a way I can update the firmware separately to the latest or should the latest DVD solve the firmware as well.

Thanks

  • As kb says updated, but its not that new. Check out www.rnsfirmware.com and take the 'modified for older units' route. Adam

  • Yes mine was an A, they were built up to end 2008 or thereabouts I believe and I agree there aren't too many users (on here at least) with them.

V.10 is the latest map version and you'll need firmware after 38xx I think.

You can update firmware straight to 38xx or higher and then instal new maps and music.

The newest maps (v.7 onwards I think) use a new format POI which requires its own partition.

So three partitions are created on the HD: maps, music. & POIs.

Thanks for the reply. Is the firmware included on the map disk or is this something I have to do separatley?

Separate.

Firmware is available for free (legally) from 'My Gti' website (look up RNS-510 firmware).

Maps aren't legally available except through Skoda / VW dealers and a few select online suppliers.

Thanks for all your help. One last question. If downloading the firmware from the GTI site will the Satnav still keep the Skoda logos etc on startup or will it make it with VW logos.

Thanks

Yes, branding is retained. The same disks are used for VW/Seat and Skoda.

The different numbers (4020 / 4024 / 4026 / 4028) are automatically used according to the car manufacturer and, in a couple of specific instances, model.

As a Skoda owner you'll only see the one ending in 4.

Last digit:

0 VW

2 VW Touareg

4 Skoda

6 Seat

8 VW T5 Multivan & California

I just went to the My Gti website but none of the firmware links are working.

Does anyone know of another website that can provide the firmwares.

Thanks

VW Navi, but they are usually buried in threads.

Have you tried the 'Alternative Download Location'? That usually works.

Or try Googling the firmware version you are after.

There might be an 'underground' website that may help with firmwares

You don't need to be cryptic when promoting the legal downloading of firmware as opposed to the illegal downloading of maps which are also available on the site you allude to...

I was only referring to firmware :-), anything else I wouldn't know about as I have free map updates anyway on the new Columbus

If the "site he is alluding to" offers both legal and illegal downloads then no, he cannot mention or link to it here.

You cannot link to or mention a site that happens to have half a dozen legal downloads when at the same time they have many, many that are not.

You are all assuming firmware downloads are legal as well.

They should only be available within the dealer network, and even though they do not have a retail value are still subject to copyright. I have edited my post anyway, maybe the quote should be edited as well.

Quote duely removed.

Hungry Horace: I stand to be possibly corrected, but it looks like yours has already been upgraded as the HW / SW part numbers are showing different suffixes.

I know its a pain, but I'd remove either the dash top box or the head unit to see what the label says the part number is.

If it ends in 'A' on the label you can go to 4020 (and beyond) without issue.

If it doesn't, you'll need modified firmware to reach a stage where the latest maps as well as the 7-digit postcodes will work.

Ok I just enabled test mode in VCDS (didn't realise it needed hard reset after).

Delivery part no. 3T0035680A

HW ver. H11

SW ver. 1304

Map ver. 7920

I am guessing its a revision A that can go upto firmware 2704.

As suggested going down the modified firmware route but have a few questions.

As it would be firmware not specific to my device does it make it laggy and are there any horrible bugs.

What is the most stable / best firmware for my device ( don't mind if its not the latest just newer than what I have).

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to help me out, I realise these questions must get asked a lot but everyone here is an invaluable source of help.

I used to have a Fabia but sold it last year and have had several different cars in between, now I have an Octavia and back in this forum I realise just how good it is compared to some others.

Edited by Hungry Horace

The sticker says that it is not an 'A' suffix (different to an 'A' revision) and you can go to higher firmware using modified firmware.

The SW part number will change as newer firmware is installed.

Thanks again for all the help.

Are the modified firmwares very laggy or buggy or is there really no difference in performance.

Do you recommend a particular firmware that is stable.

Thanks again for all the help.

Edited by Hungry Horace

I've not used them but I've not heard any issues with them.

I believe adamal is using a modified 4xxx without issue.

I think I went to a standard 4120 on mine, and that was fine.

As kb says, I have much improved functionality with 402x, with no 'laggy' feel at all.

Andy, I think you must have had a newer unit to go to 412x?  I'm led to believe 402x is the latest recommended for those older units like mine and the OPs requiring the modified firmware.

Thanks

Adam

Mine was a Rev B and worked fine. The only way of really telling is from the radio HW version. There are very very few Rev A units about in my experience.
