  • I like the cornering fogs. I'd say the constable needs to catch up on vehicle developments

  • Its a shame they are not stopping the people with lights out.......see loads of cars with lights out & keep seeing the same ones on my way to work with the lights still out.

  • Must have been a slow night. It's legal, there's no need to disable them

Nice work Wayne, any chance you could also email Skoda UK, it would be interesting to hear their angle on them.

I wonder if they are type approved as dual purpose?

I read on here (in one of the many cornering fog light arguments debates) that VAG vehicles with cornering fog lights had a different E Mark (vehicle EMC certification) stamped into the glass / lens than on those without?

Could be absolute rubbish by the way.

Could do.

Can someone draft me a better written statement?

and would using the ASK SKODA section be any good?

I've never had a (sensible) answer from Ask Skoda.

Cant find ASK SKODA section!

I thought there was one on here (Wayne dreaming?)?

If it helps, early on in my Yeti ownership I did contact Skoda UK (via the Contact Us page on their web site) about the cornering fog lights, querying their legality wrt to rule 236 of the Highway Code and the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations referenced therein.  In response I received a phone call from the Skoda UK Technical Manager who assured me that the cornering fogs were fully type-approved and 100% legal.  Unfortunately since the exchange was carried out via their web site and over the phone, I don't have a written record of it.  I'm sure that if someone else were to repeat the query in similar terms now, Skoda UK would respond with a similar answer.

While we're on the subject of the Highway Code, may I draw people's attention to rule 170:

170

Take extra care at junctions. You should...
  • not assume, when waiting at a junction, that a vehicle coming from the right and signalling left will actually turn. Wait and make sure

Thus if someone manages to interpret a single, large-ish, off-white light coming on as being the same as a small-ish orange light flashing on and off and as a result they choose to pull out without waiting to make sure, then it seems fairly likely - since they failed to follow the advice given in the Highway Code - that their driving "falls below the standard expected of a reasonable, prudent and competent driver".  That's Driving Without Due Care or Careless Driving which can earn them a fixed penalty of 3 points and £100 fine, rising up to a maximum of 9 points, plus a fine of up to £2,500 and a discretionary disqualification.  So it would seem like a good idea not to do it.

Finally, as others have noted above, VAG are by no means the only manufacturers to offer cornering fog lights.

Let's make this plain and simple;

Skoda, Seat, VW and Audi all fit cornering "fog" lights to their cars (along with many other manufacturers).

All these cars have been Type Approved for sale in the UK (and the EU).

To be Type Approved they have to be legal.

Therefore these lights are LEGAL!!

Is that too difficult to understand?

Someone not getting a present from Santa this year then ...

:-)

Well there certainly appears to be some people who don't understand the terms "Type Approval" and "legal"

Thanks so much for correcting and educating us all again.

There seem to be some here who cannot understand the sheer fact that all the things fitted by Skoda to their car are legal, because they have to be Type Approved to be sold. Whether they like that feature or not is immaterial; they are legal.

Now the fact that the Policeman in the opening post got it wrong is the problem for the local Force and not us. Personally I would have been having a chat with his Divisional Inspector about the matter, but then I often work closely with the Police so know the proceedures.

At least you, Marie, take it lightheartedly unlike others.

And yes I am grumpy, having gone sick from work today, and having an appointment with the Doc tomorrow to hopefully pull forward my Carpal Tunnel operation.'

Aww Graham, get better soon  :bearhug:

Sorry to hear you are below par-and wish you well for an early repair.

Well there certainly appears to be some people who don't understand the terms "Type Approval" and "legal"

Santa will not be pleased.

Lol

No dont get better!

I mean what would the world be without our own forum Meldew?!!!

Can u not see One Foot in the Grave will never be the same again, if Victor got better?!!!

Kidding.

Get well soon, G :-)

Hi Graham,

Don't envy you with CTS and its associated pain. I'm sure you have researched the subject in your normal thorough manner but worth mentioning, just in case you have missed it, that the NHS Wales Direct site is a mine of information for CTS.

Get wellsoon and 'pob lwc'.

Shanco

Cheers for that, Shanco, that was one page I hadn't found!

I suspect mine is a conglomerate of various reasons; I know my mother suffered it and was operated on, plus what is basically RSI from work plus old age, of course.

Many years ago I had a Minivan fitted with fog/spot lights. They each had two bulbs in them. While driving through a town at night in falling snow, I was surprised when a policeman vaulted over a low fence and waved me down. I had the spotlights switched on. He came to the window and told me it was illegal to use spotlights in a built-up area. I said they were actually fog lights and were legal in falling snow. As he walked round to the front of the van to check, I flicked the switch to foglights which put on the yellow bulbs. He looked somewhat puzzled and then let me off with a warning.

Now don't quote me but I find myself agreeing with Graham.

It must be a first that people here seem to be wanting to prove that their car is illegal.

Surely, no one really believes that Skoda (or VAG, Mercedes etc etc) would get a car past EU/UK regs if it didn't conform?

And personally, I think they work really well to illuminate the road when cornering (or reversing...) adding to safety.

PS And I reckon the FL low set 'fogs' should be more useful in the fog - just hope they don't have an orange tint and flash...

Sorry to hear about your problem Graham, you will have to get a modern box with buttons rather than those levers.

Seriously get well soon.

Hi Graham,

Sorry to read about your problem with Carpal Tunnel. I have had 4 operations now, 2 on each wrist. What used to help alleviate the pain in the hands and the forearms during the bad times was a wrist support incorporating a thumb support. I hope you get your operation soon.

Over the past year I have enjoyed your expertise and cutting wit along with the other stalwarts of this forum. Best wishes for Christmas and the New year.
