Diagnostics Tester

Featured Replies

Hi, i am now a proud owner a v reg 1.3 mpi felicia and was wondering would it be possible/worth buying a handheld diagnostic tester for it.  if so where would you connect/plug it in, because Haynes are very vague about this subject and just tell you to take the car to a skoda dealer  Also if it was possible would it also work on my fathers 2nd Gen octavia.

Not at all sure about the Felly but MkII Octavias certainly have a diagnostic port but I don't know where it is.

The felly that i dismantled to get the 1.3 mpi engine had its diagnostic plug at the bottom( of the dashboard) of the driver side.

There are diagnostic cable units on ebay for sale but i haven't actually bought one yet. i might buy it later when i might actually need it.

price is quite cheap and looks like it supports various models

hi i asked around (on facebook )and well they told me that that cable is only to diagnose and does not clear errors or the check engine thingy.

Most are recomending something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/U581-OBD-OBD2-CAN-BUS-Auto-Scanner-LIVE-DATA-Code-Reader-Diagnostic-Cable-Tool-/390569630332?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item5aefc39a7c&vxp=mtr , http://www.ebay.com/itm/C99D-Car-Engine-Scanner-Code-Reader-Diagnostic-Scan-Tools-Universal-OBD2-II-EOBD-/321247268720?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4acbd44f70&vxp=mtr

neiter of those hand held devices will be of any use to you for a felicia, they are eobd interfaces and probably wont connect to an obd vehicle like a felicia

So what do you suggest TeflonTom?

i would go for a proper legit version of vcds to be honest

have a look at this Czech software company in Prague.

contact them and ask what is best for your car.

This is all giving me a headache, i think i should stick to something i know about. Good old hammer and spanner mechanics

So moving on i'm going to change the oil and filter and skoda recomend oil to spec VW 501 01 or for best VW 500 00(which i would prefer)

Not wanting to get rubbish oil can anyone recomend a really good oil (makeing sure i wouldn't be wasting money going for a super expensive advanced formula one)

VCDS Lite and a cheap cable from ebay, usually less than £20.

(Oh and before the ignorant go wetting themselves: VCDS Lite is designed for the 3rd party cables, so no piracy here http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/faq_3.html#NeedAdp )

MKII Octavias you can get two versions of the cable, but the software is the same. The Micro-CAN cable is around £210 and will do CANBus only, the full-on cable will do everything but it closer to £300. Always, always, always buy the cable from a legit source (See RossTech website) as VCDS piracy is met with some extreme hostility on here, not just form the Mods, but the members too. Also, you have no idea what else a hacked version can be doing. In the past there have been reports that cars have been bricked by using a fake VCDS. Also, going legit keeps the investment going, so we do see new features from time to time. (the new wireless version looks interesting)

Both cars have the diag port by the driver's right knee. It looks like a cousin of the SCART port on TVs and VCRs.

This diagnostic tester reads diagnostic codes for a limited number of vehicle systems. But my preference would be to use VCDS Lite in its place. VCDS is the bee's knees but costs. I used it on my R reg Felicia 1.6GLX well as my Mk 1 Octavia and the two Skodas in my signature.

A mineral or semi synthetic 10W40 will be suitable for a MPi Felicia.  Felicias use K line for the diagnostics so VCDS lite would be what I'd prefer to use as you'll be able to look at the Airbags (taking suitable precautions) and the immobiliser as well.  The Octavia 2 uses CAN for the diagnostics.

Just to wrap this thread up, i just bought a handheld VAG tester from Gendan, not the one mentioned above but one that gives you the definition of the code aswell, and allows reset of codes/lights, and oil sevice reset.

Just tried it out on my felicia and it works perfectly, and it retrived some codes.

I've started a new thread for these in the diagnostic forum http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/301360-first-time/ as i was unsure how to proceed.

Anyway Thanks to everyone who suggested possable systems to me.

P.S.  VCDS was a bit out of my price range

By any chance do you have a link to the VAG tester please? i am interested in having something similar

This is the one I bought http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_GDVAGPROO.html i'll point out that this is a USED tester and does NOT have full fuctionallity on cars from 2009 onwards. But i can confirm it will read codes on the 1.3mpi felicia, I have not yet tried clearing codes but i can't see why it should not. I bought it because of some of the extra features it has over this one below: (most of the extra features are for later VAG models)

http://m.gendan.co.uk/product_VAGVG2.html (this is the one from a previous post)

I was told both these would retrive codes for the felicia and both supported the CAN protocol for my fathers octavia2 which i also wanted.

Also have a look at this one it is the latest model http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VAGT55.html

Just E-mail them at [email protected] if you have any questions, and about compatability. They are very helpful and quick to respond
