Noise / tap under acceleration in 3rd - inner CV joint?

Featured Replies

So if I'm idling in 3rd at around 30mph and give it a little bit of acceleration (not flooring it, but brisk) I will often feel and hear a series of taps through the accelerator pedal (3-4 taps over a couple of seconds).

I've always had a single clunk on first setting off about 5 metres down my drive - likewise can feel through the accelerator pedal.  Wonder if this is related?

Inner CV joint or other suggestions?  Been doing it for around the last 1000 miles or so.

Can also hear it sometimes in second.  Is there any way to check the state of this without getting the car up in the air with the wheels unloaded?

Still got this problem.  Anyone got any ideas?  I understand the clunk on setting off first thing is probably the ABS self test so unrelated?

Find a big car park and do some circles on full lock?

I'm not far away from replacing both my outer CV's.  Same symptoms as yours.  I've had enough of it now.

Thanks for the suggestion.  It doesn't seem particularly related to full lock when I've given that a go, it seems to have a preference for making the noise around 20degrees to the left on the steering wheel with a bit of acceleration.  The best way to get it to happen is the entrance to a roundabout with a slight incline.  I can get it to go in a straight line, usually by backing off to around 30 and then giving it some acceleration, but it is harder.  And on occasion it is instead of tapping a moment of creaky graunching (if you know what I mean).

I've got someone having a look at it next week as I'm not too keen under the car.

I had both outer CV boots done around 50-60K ago, neither are split at the moment, however they were both split when they were done so I guess there could have been some damage manifesting now.

I'll let you all know what fixes it if anything.

I've also noticed she is occasionally a little spluttery on first starting, I guess at 108K miles now I've probably got some duff glowplugs...

To think, I was up in Norfolk last week.  Would have been really interesting to compare.

My nearside one is really noticeable on full lock.  My offside one really notices similar to yours - I've a couple of right turns going uphill out or my workplace and if I put it under load it's really noticeable, even in a straight line.  I swear road surface affects it too in that it's quite evident on a rough surface.

I've got a dual carriageway about a mile from my home which has a steady uphill drag that I like coz it sorts out cars with grunt from those without.  But I tend to not open it up at the moment - at least not on full song, coz of the creak/clonk/tick tick tick which diminishes the enjoyment.  Guess I ought to shut up whinging and get 'em fixed.

And I'm pretty sure I've got a glow plug in the twilight of it's career, but mine settles down after about 10 seconds from cold, so that'll be okay for the foreseeable, given the risks associated with getting them out.

Mine's coming up for a service which I was going to do myself, but I might just book it in to my local indy and have the CV's checked and done at the same time.

That is a shame, would have been nice to compare notes :)

Do you (or anyone else for that matter) know if any of the aftermarket joints / remanufactured driveshafts with joints are any good?  Or is OE the only way to go for these kind of things?

I bought a GKN replacement CV joint kit from GSF for my 1.9 Passat about five years ago and it's still going strong.

Still not got anywhere really with this.  I've just put a used driver side driveshaft. which although has given less vibration at idle with footbrake on, and taken away a twangy vibration on going from N to D and N to R, has done nothing for the clunking.  Old shaft had a small amount of rotational play in inner joint.

Today I found a nice long road with no traffic and was able to reproduce at will by slowing from 40 to 30 fairly quickly, then accelerating again (all while in 3rd on the tiptronic).

I made a recording of the sound over a few attempts.  This is fairly typical - sometimes it is louder, sometimes quieter.  Have a listen if you like:

The gearbox people said they were sure it wasn't the gearbox and thought either engine mounts or driveshaft.  I've bought a new snub nose mount to fit (as I guess mine is as old as the car).  But welcome any other ideas of something to look at once I have the car in bits :). The main engine mounts will be way beyond my ability so if those are worth doing it will be going to see my man :)

Sorted now by VW Technics (http://www.vwtechnics.com/) in Willingham (Cambridgeshire) - turns out my exhaust was catching on the bodywork.  Looks like the flexi-joint might be on the way out, but for the moment it has been adjusted enough to stop clunking.  Extremely happy, can't recommend them highly enough - this had foxed two other specialists.

Always good to find out what is wrong, I don't like posts that leave things blank.

Looking at my 11 year old motor the exhaust looks it is in good nick apart from the rear box joint exiting the box. Looks like it will fail soon. :(

Hopefully it will hold together for you.

Did you see I revived your thread about VCDS code 01341?  Did you ever get anywhere with it?

Mine has always had this fault, I clear it and it comes back after a while.
