It doesn't, it has a larger 55litre one like The Plumber just said....

  • Having read through the thread, I think we have learned the following:   1. It is ok to buy/own a VRS as it based on personal choice 2. It is ok to buy/own any other version of the Octavia as it is

  • It's the one that comes with a better spec as standard

  • Alternatively, buy a VRS...that should also fix the problem. In all seriousness, I think it's expected that more VRS stuff is discussed on here. The buyers of these cars are more likely to be petrol

True, the bodykit, seats, brakes, different suspension components and bigger wheels probably help contribute to its weight too, cant think of much else.

Normal tank is given as 50 ltrs, with the 4x4 that bit bigger to give it a similar range to a 2wd 150.

Someone asked earlier in the thread if anyone has bought a 1.2TSi 5 door - we did.

Nice to hear you are pleased with it. It's definitely the best value for money Octavia you can get, and as you say it isn't really basic at all. It's not that long ago that you'd have needed a much more costly car to get that as standard.

Yeah, don't sweat the small stuff...respect diversity and lets discuss important stuff like mud flaps and winter tyres. No bones of contention there then.

Don't forget colour choice. Another non-contentios item.

Tee hee. Are you playing up bitchi? I like your style. Lets all play happy skoda families once more ;-)

Agreed!

I like shallow and pointless its easier on my small mind.

Certainly beats the toing and froing between 2 posters on the technical guides thread (now locked I note) in January where the posts got longer and longer as each tried to outdo the other.

All threads are relevant or irrelevant depending on your point of view or knowledge of a particular subject.

Nothing like a feisty debate. Having seen a few Elegances on the road I would have to say that they look far too high off the ground, and very mundane.

I would be massively disappointed if I bought one thinking it would look anything like it does on the brochures I have. The one I have on front of me on my desk right now looks fabulous, it's the one where the family is sat looking through the pano roof in a silver estate on a car park roof top. Open the page and there's a saloon which looks like it's riding on 19 inch alloys with squat lowered suspension. It looks fantastic, it's close to blatant misrepresentation if you ask me, and it's about time it was stopped. I am sure an elegance on sports suspension with 18 inch rims looks pretty much like a vRS, and that would be a nice spec.

I'm sorry if I am offending, but to my mind a standard car on 17 inch wheels looks like a car that Mr Safely-Rogers from East Cheam would drive.

No petty arguments. I purely said i believe Xenons will be dangerous for on coming drivers as i would have thought the brighter light would mean more chance of dazzling the other drovers. If i am wrong, then i apologise, but i am yet to be convinced.

Don't understand how the xenons can be considered dangerous. Lots of cars have them and I don't find them dazzling at all. On the contrary, the auto-levelling that all xenon light systems have prevents the dazzle that you get with conventional lights when the offending car has a heavy load in the boot or is towing a caravan - the driver has to manually adjust the lights to compensate - and how many drivers do that?

A psychologist would say that man's need to have a fast sporty looking car is a sign of an inferiority complex and a small todger.

I considered the Vrs tdi aswell although my top two were the 2.0 tdi and 1.4 tsi, but on the afternoon I was trying to do the deal there were only two already built vrs tdi's in the stocklist as far as I can remember, one was an auto which my wife wouldn't drive and the other had every extra under the sun bolted onto it, so sadly they were out of the equation.

I think all in all the octy range has a fabulously varied set of engines and every person has a favourite depending on their own personal requirements.

Have to disagree. The range is crying out for a 2.0 standard tsi. They have them abroad. What makes Skoda think we don't need them here?

Would that be said by a psychologist who can't afford a fast sporty car? Lol ;-)

Too similar to the vrs tsi? I don't know just asking.

Mind you the 2.0 tdi is too similar to the vrs tdi!!!!!!

Not the highest paid profession I would imagine!

Never met a poor psychologist yet Furby.  Anyway, do skoda manufacture fast sporty cars?  Didn't think it was their niche.

Having had the first two monikers of the vRS, the latter being the diesel species, I have to say that there seems to be a little discourse in this mk III sub forum. I note that a fair few on here are Skoda first time buyers in both vRS and non vRS camps. So let the Mr Safely-Richards and Mr Edgely-Turbos team hug commence. Nowt' like this on the Mk II side

Is that because the gap between the vrs and standard engines was greater in previous editions of the Octy?

In the Mk1 you got 180bhp in the VRS which was 30 more than the best Elegance.

In the Mk2 you got an extra 30bhp again in the diesel, or 40 for the petrol compared to the 1.8.

This time round it's 34bhp difference in the diesel or 77bhp for the UK petrol.

Haha yeah I doubt many are "poor" but sadly there isn't very much money in mental health these days!

Agree Skoda don't have a sports car in their lineup. Drove the vRS TDI today (wife was keen to look at options for replacing her Fabia II vRS) and was quite underwhelmed tbh. Looked nice enough but no drama, fun or sense of occasion. Was quite slow compared to my 120d too. Also had a go in a 150tdi elegance which makes much more sense as a family tool but also not for me on this occasion. She actually quite fancies another Fabia vRS but in estate form....... Noooooo! ;-)

The kerb weight of the vRS cannot be down to the rear suspension alone. If you compare a vRS TDI 184 Estate with a TDI 150 4x4, then the later is given as 27kg lighter. The 4x4 also has independent rear suspension, plus a haldex box with associated prop shafts and a larger 55ltr fuel tank to drag round :wonder:

So where is the lard coming from :giggle:

My understanding is the 184CR is a minor development of the old 170CR and is a particularly heavy lump whereas the 150CR is major overhaul of the 140CR and has been on a healthy diet which probably explains why the 150CR Elegance is only 0.1 sec slower on the sprint to 62mph than the 184CR vRS?

Been having a look at the parts book briefly and both the 150 and 184 share quite a number of common parts and their design differs from the 2nd gen CR engine, in that these newer motors use a separate camshaft module bolted to the cylinder head (same module for both the 150 & 184), instead of directly fitting the cams into the head; valves though are carried over being the same part number for current and previous CR engines. Oh pistons differ but rings are shared.

Only odd thing is the 150 has a replacement cylinder block part number but the 184 does not, stating you have to replace with a full base engine :wonder:

There's a lot of Vrs jealousy on here I think, elegance is a nice car but the Vrs just stands out on its own. End of story. And the 184bhp is a lot more than the 150. There a few lads on here could not wait for the Vrs and bought an elegance that are kicking themselves I'd say.

I'd find it very have to go back to a basic style octavia. Just put one beside the other and there's no comparison.

No jealousy. If there had been jealousy, id have got one. But it was the last car on my mind. Therefore cant be jealousy. Certainly not on my part, and i havent seen it with others.

As for no comparison. That is purely in the eye of the beholder. I myself would say the opposite.

Youve not offended me. But youve just offended my new car!!

Although im starting to wonder if someone stuck a different suspension on it. In fact whther they put suspension on at all.
