A Non VRS Forum?

Featured Replies

This forum seems to be monopolised by VRS topics.  OK my monika says 3xVRS but they were Mk1 Fabias - now I've got a 2 litre TDI SE hatch on order and can't find diddly squat on the things I'm interested in.  Such as:- Delivery dates, Fuel consumption, Performance, Driving on 'normal' tyres, mods, etc.

Yes I wanted a fast car but perhaps 134 mph max and 8.6 secs 0-62 mph will be sufficient?

By the way, my 2 years with a Greenline Yeti have been fantastic and if I get around 12.5K after my 15K purchase price my cheapest ever!

  • Having read through the thread, I think we have learned the following:   1. It is ok to buy/own a VRS as it based on personal choice 2. It is ok to buy/own any other version of the Octavia as it is

  • It's the one that comes with a better spec as standard

  • Alternatively, buy a VRS...that should also fix the problem. In all seriousness, I think it's expected that more VRS stuff is discussed on here. The buyers of these cars are more likely to be petrol

Why don't you start a thread asking some questions?

Perhaps time to edit your 'User Name' as well then? SEx3dave ? :giggle:

In all seriousness, I think it's expected that more VRS stuff is discussed on here. The buyers of these cars are more likely to be petrol heads and more in the detail so to speak.

The delivery dates threads I've seen have all octy 3 models on? Maybe we look in different places on the forum but in my opinion I dont think its monopolised by vrs related topics :) sometimes you just have learn to use the right words in the search bar ;)

Id say its cause people are car enthusiasts and that type of person will probably buy a sporty...ish car rather than a normal everyday basic car.

This isn't a vRS forum anyway, it's for the Octavia III, no matter which type.

I took delivery of my 2.0tdi elegance estate about a month ago and at the moment getting around 40mpg in town and 55mpg on the dual carriageway. It is surprisingly pokey and refined car and overall really nice to drive. I'm not a car enthusiast in anyway so I can't get my head round most of the threads on this forum.

One question I have always considered asking others is how much different is the vrs tdi to the basic 2.0tdi. Is it that significant a step up in power like the vrs tsi is to the 1.4tsi?

Back in Apr-Jun it was all about Elegances and a few SE's as that's what we were all waiting for, so its fair to say that as vRS's are finally starting to come through in significant numbers that most of the threads are vRS related. I think over the coming months, the thread topics will even out and be more about general ownership issues that we can all relate to.

I'm sure I've seen just as many Elegance threads.

Well I've certainly not seen anyone asking about a 1.2 S.

Has anyone bought one?

As section leader I don't want people to feel it's all about the VRs. If you want specifics about a model then you can start a topic if not already available. There will be some crossover of options and probably some symptoms/characteristics across models.

Post away and enjoy the forum.

Test driven a Elegance 150 DSG back to back with a vRS 184 DSG and within legal boundaries I didn't think there was much in it performance wise. The torsion beam on the 150 was noticeable by it's presence, as was the case when I had a TSI 140 SE to run round Lincolnshire for a day. However if I had to choose between the two I think I'd still take the Elegance; noticed a lot of tyre roar associated with the 18" wheels fitted to the vRS.

Interesting, thanks for the response.

What is this mythical non-vRS creature you speak of?!

I got a 1.2 SE Leon

Going from a MK2 Blackline estate DSG to a 2.0 TDi Elegance estate manual.

Like my vRS but performance wise its never 100% sold me, wanted a manual car again as dont rate DSG with the diesel engine and also find the ride with the sports suspension uncomfortable. That last issue for me makes it a compromised family car.

With the O3 Elegance spec is very nice, as is the manual gearbox. The combination of the revised 2.0 engine and low kerb weight makes for a car thats easily as quick if not quicker than the MK2 vRS CR and on normal suspension its very refined and still handles quite well. I also like the fact it is quite non descript and ordinary but probably goes better than its looks suggest.

It was pay just under 23k for one of these or 25.5k for a vRS TDi. I didnt think it was worth the premium.

IMO even the vRS TSi is no performance car, its a warm hatch. I dont personally need a family car that can hit 60 in less than 7 secs (had that in my old Fabia vRS estate), I need a cheap old school performance car that can do it in 4 or 5 secs that I can drive on my own without the family on board, or take to track days. If it dies it goes to car heaven or sits on the drive until its fixed. Thats my plan longer term anyway, bored with having family cars that look quicker than they actually go, v underwhelming....just need the cash and approval and im set haha

.....all that said though if someone offered me a 335d xdrive M Sport Touring id probably have myself a bit of that!

You can't beat an Elegance spec with a few toys added in my opinion. Bit I am a bit biased LOL!

Sent from my phone so please excuse brevity and spelling

People always define and remember a model by its sporting version.

Everyone remembers astra gte not astra gl and discussion, pre internet, even motoring news would always be on more fully loaded versions, I've seen plenty of non-vrs material on here, you just have to think that rock bands headlining a concert will naturally have a bit more talk.

But more importantly, from a new-to-skoda point of view. I've never seen people so eager to talk down it's sporting variant. The VRS to a newcommer is the SRi of the range equivalent. Sports Refined, not motorsport thoroughbred. Skoda should be careful here as the VRS is starting to mean different things to different people. They need a different moniker for sporty than for motorsport! Even Vauxhall added extra letters for their sporty mainstream production models. You had SRi (like vrs power derv - 0-60 8s) but if you wanted to go faster you got a GSi or Turbo.

Also current vrs are within touching distance of GTi/gtd and we don't see them undermining their brand, so maybe it's time for a new badge variant?

Whatever model you have I hope you are as pleased with your car as I am with mine.  Just waiting to put the rubber mats that Father Christmas brought into it.

Happy Christmas to you all.

Another thing to remember is the site probably wouldn't be here if there was no vrs.

The clue is in the name after all

Skoda has dabbled with a Sport badge which was used on the Fabia I & II and Octy II but they didn't seem over popular particularly in the UK.

However the Monte Carlo tag seems to have gone down very well, which is basically a revamp of the Fabia II Sport spec. Think the success this time lays with the black pack theme, which subsequently migrated itself to the vRS and then xenon headlight packs.

Maybe the vRS has become too successful; see quite a few Mk II FL's about probably equal in number to the more humble SE etc. :wonder:

Still not owned a vRS myself, have toyed with the idea on a number of occasions, even test driven a current TDI version but I decided again to stick with 4x4 and good ground clearance.

Really? I've seen the same thing happen on every car forum I've ever been on, the new sports model comes out and every slates it before they even driven one, 2 years later a lot of those same people own one. It's just generic car forum stuff.

Very true, human nature that people don't like people sort of saying somethings better than what they have. When i had my mk2 and then went in the mk3 it was no comparison :).
