Scan with VCDS to see if any sensors up the spout.  This is why I asked about the coolant temp sender as symptom of that being a dud is poor fuel consumption.  Also check tyres evenly inflated to 32 (ish) PSI.  Maybe check tracking all OK too?

ill get it on the vcds tmox, tracking does pull to one side, been like that since ive owned the car didnt think that would use 100miles of fuel lol

  • There's some of your low mpg right there.  Keep in gear down sharp hills, revs about 2500 - I promise you, you use ZERO fuel as gravity and your gearbox keep the engine ticking over, and the fuel inje

I've thought of another option, are you driving it like a diesel should be driven?  Not knowing if your old Anni was a GTI petrol or a GT TDI, I'm not sure if you know the best way to drive a derv? :)

Re: tracking.  The car will always follow the camber pull to the left.  When you have to start fighting it, then something is wrong.  Again to half your usual fuel consumption is something else.  Unless you are stuck in traffic everywhere you go.

it was a petrol, but ive never been a heavy footer, i drive nice an easy if i drive any faster my mileage will be doin 150 miles with a full tank lol

I live in the area and in my Stage 1 mk2 vRS Fabia I still could get plenty more Mpg than that in around town driving. Hills go up but they also go down, avgs out not too bad. Have also driven other less expnomical Diesels around Hudds BMW 330D etc and always got over 40.

Needs looked at/serviced/investigated etc, whatever you do, don't go mapping it until it's right.

How old is the car, whats it's history?

2004, full service history mileage is 128k

ill take it to local garage tmoz put it on the vcds machine

Downhill - do you put it in gear and use revs to hold back the speed, or dip the clutch and use the brake pedal?  Doing the former uses ZERO fuel, doing the latter uses some fuel as engine still needs fuel to tickover.  Gravity keeps the engine running on the other option.

Anything sub 40mpg in a fabia vRS diesel is simply a sign of something being wrong "somewhere".....  :)

i dip clutch and use brake

There's some of your low mpg right there.  Keep in gear down sharp hills, revs about 2500 - I promise you, you use ZERO fuel as gravity and your gearbox keep the engine ticking over, and the fuel injectors literally stop injecting.  Easy way to tell - put on your instant mpg next time - dip clutch / brake, and mpg will probably read about 60/70 (instant mpg) - put it in gear and reading will change to ------ - i.e infinity mpg. :)

You can also use engine braking to "ease and squeeze" in traffic, to allow gaps to engine brake in to, rather than the actual brakes. :)   All this saves fuel.

Couldn't agree more with the using the gears thing! However mine shows ---- if I go into neutral at 50mph+, it will be using fuel but i'm guessing the display doesn't show over a certain number.

Terrible mpg that is .

check your brakes too, could have some dragging which will reduce mpg.

when you brim your tank what does the display show for fuel range?

done 230 says ive got 70 miles left, soon as it hits red i fill it up

Mine usaully says 480-500 when fill up, in reality get 450-60 on a tank full, circa £54.

Travelling 20 miles to work sticking to speed limits ;) it shows just over 50mpg :)

You should do 430 before light comes on it my opinion,.   General rule of thumb - 10 gallon tank, 50mpg = 500 miles to empty, not including reserve bit which is around a gallon.

Right gear, right speed. Fuel consumption can drop dramatically if you have to regain lost energy when braking. Approching a junction, for instance I lift of, change down to match the conditions and what the engine's doing. I hardly need to use the middle thingy pedal in town. I've had one or two taps on the window to tell me my brake lights aren't working :D

thanks ill give it a go, so im losing about 150 miles somewhere,

200 more like!  I am surprised the engine is running well chucking that much fuel through.  I don't know where to start looking.  What is the smoke like generally when you boot it?

If you are not losing fuel out the tank, then it must be overfuelling the engine somewhere - maybe dodgy injector or tandem pump is leaking like a sieve (the silver block on the right side of engine as you look at it)

lol... dont really boot it, ill have a look at the pump tmoz

perhaps it needs a good clearout?

From my experience with diesel engines atleast once a month when upto normal temps give it a right hammering :)

WOT in second upto rev limiter, same in third and fourth if you fancy, clear the soot out ;)

Red line in 6th just to make sure it's all clear

I get 350 miles out of a 2.0 TFSI Turbo Petrol Octavia vRS! Definitely something wrong with your 1.9 TDi...

I'd suggest a full service (inc air, oil and fuel filters) then if it still persists look at the MAF and fuel pump.

VCDS also, as if not the above it could be an injector problem.

A good specialist will (should!) be able to find the fault using VCDS.

I'm surprised no one has suggested that the car may have been previously mapped and, maybe mapped badly?

Might be worth taking it to a reputable mapper and they can check to see if the ECU is as it should be and hasnt been played with.

Alternatively there are a few guys here that could take a look at logs collected from VCDS and see if anything is acting funny :)

I used to get 30+ out of my tuned Leon CupraR!! 44 mpg now and that is truely mixed driving with spirited runs in there!
