JOhn,

There is an A road approx 3 miles from where I live and when the road flooded, without fail - prior to the ABS unit failing -  the ESP light on the dash flickered. Tonight (in worse conditions) nothing

I am well behaved:) . Well at least I try my best :)

but , (question from t'other half, who is peering over my shoulder as I type this) how would you know if the esp were functioning correctly. Is it enough that there are no warning lights on the dash?

All best

It's linked to the traction control so find a quiet junction and boot it out like you were when you were 17 in your Dad's car. It should kick in then and cut the power pretty vicously. I wouldn't like to test the rear end control.

Find a muddy entrance to a field or a wet grass verge and try spinning the wheels.

That could have been as a result of the sensor or look being knackered and throwing a wobbler.
