Mid section resonator removal results

Featured Replies

Loved the Vrs from new however always felt it needed a bit of burble from the exhaust as it's completely silent. Took my tsi to my trusted exhaust dealer/fabricator and had the mid section resonator removed and replaced with straight alloy pipe. This does not affect the cat converter or two rear exits either side of motor

Took about an hour and was charged £60.

Around 100 miles or so later pipe began to soot up and settle down. Now has a real nice note to the exhaust, nothing loud but I would now compare it to a stock mk7 gti. Also about 12kg saved if anyone's interested.

Just thought I'd put this up incase anyone was thinking of doing the same. A relatively cheap little mod. Yes it will void the warranty on the exhaust. This will tie me over until milltek release a full system.

Very interesting mod. Well done for going for it. Would love to hear a sound or vid clip if you get the time.

One thing, having had custom exhausts in the past, was there any boominess after the resonator removal at all?

Nope, no drone or boominess. Wouldn't even say it was raspie. More of a deep note with a burble. Google mk7 gti exhaust and this is an indication of sound

Also have to mention my motor is a manual so not sure if this would give you the dsg farts of which I am not a fan

Me neither, deep note with burble sounds like a decent result to me. The absence of drone is reassuring. Might have to have a crack at this at some point.

I really want this but so many questions.....

This could be considered not really a performance change is it (i.e. you aren't changing the cars exhaust for another), just making the car sound properly ?

Any more info? What/where can anyone go to achieve this without going to somewhere to pay a grand for the exhaust?

It ruins the existing one so probably worth waiting until out of warranty?

Hmm. Where can I get this mod done?

Theoretically - its just replaced with stainless exhaust pipe section ....so could be done by anyone- exhaust fabricators ?

Sounds a bit hardcore though, I certainly wouldn't want to be in the minority testing it out as its been described as a bit raw etc.

Also there is the "ain't broken don't fix it" mentality which steers me to be honest. Hence I'll probably be doing nothing except following interest of what others are doing.

Rather sad though to have such a capable car so refined and quiet you can't hear it and need a Soundaktor to feel like its doing anything :/

I've done it, you can bring it to any exhaust shop to 'chop' the resonator and replaced it with a pipe. Very simple, under one hour job.

Sound level is acceptable however there is resonance at around 2500rpm. Car 'feel' slower as the exhaust sound is somewhat 'looser'

Better option is to replace the stock resonator with a smaller one. I did this as I couldn't stand the resonance. Quieter than straight pipe but sounded a lot better and smoother. You can really feel and hear the 'sportiness' during downshifting.

If you going to replace the resonator with smaller one, pick the one that has stainless or ceramic packing. I used a cheap glass pack one and it burnt out after 8 months.

Another tip I can think of is to install flanges on the pipes, this way you can always go back to OEM resonator without re-welding.

Great contribution

No resonator just sounds plain nasty and raspy. If thats what you want, great. Not for me I'm afraid.

Where did you get the 18" resonator though? That sounds far more recent, nice almost seamless improvement. Difficult to tell real sound difference though but sounds like you are loving it.

You can obtain such resonator from any muffler shop, depending on their business model, most tend to stock the cheaper one aka glasspack. They come in different sizes, 12, 18 and 24 inches are the more common sizes. The longer the resonator the quieter the sound.

Alternatively you can source it from the world wide web. Magnaflow, Jetex, Vibrant Performance from the top of my mind should have resonators on their product line-up. Jetex is a good option if you live in the UK. FYI, our piping is 2.5 inch.

Difference is subtle, when the car is cruising it's as quiet as stock. Only 'bark' when you step on it, sounded really good at downshifting. Very good balance between engine and exhaust sound, still retain that 'urgency' sound and feel. Also induce DSG Fart if that's your thing ;)

I've since reverted back to stock as the glasspack has burnt out and I need the car as stock as possible for warranty claim. I do miss the sound hence looking at purchasing another aftermarket resonators.

Yeah sure, thats what I figured if anyones look for one. Plus look at the notes it suggested the ultra quiet is for 6-8 cylinder so its for those guys with a serious noise problem - not the Octavia is it lol

It's generally easier to quieten down turbo car compare to non-turbo car, the turbine soaked most of the engine noise, hence enthusiast's concern when Ferrari and AMG decided to turbocharged their sonorous V8 engines.

I'm actually contemplating of using two of the ultra quiet one to replace both rear mufflers, looks like a good fit, I'll report back if I do decided to go this route  :)

I think I prefer the sound of the Milltek cat back system but then that's about £700!

I know at the end of the day most cars built for mainstream motoring are like this, but I really expected a bit more from noise from a petrol (though used to it with diesels).

It's a shame because the engine does have a nice noise, it's just super quiet.

I believe they target Octavia vRS towards a more sophisticated/mature audience hence quietening down the exhaust as much as possible compare to a say a Golf GTI which shares the same engine but with considerably more drama from the exhaust.

It's worth mentioning that GTI and vRS shares a similar looking resonator however the one on the GTI has a straight pipe inside the box with notches (I counted two) in the middle of the pipe, whereas vRS one is perforated all the way.

I believe the 230 version address the lack of noise form the exhaust, more roar and pop from videos on YouTube.

Different exhaust setup ? Is this confirmed ?
