Stop Start - Power Consumption too high.

Featured Replies

Not done 1,500 miles in the vRS and the Stop Start has stopped working.

I know it won't work if the engine temp is too low, or the incline is too high, but tonight I had the info state "Power consumption too high".

I only had headlights on, no heated windscreen, air con and fans were off, heated mirrors were off.  I checked the power consumption and it was showing pretty much 0.

Engine mode was in Eco.  So I don't understand it..  After another mile or so with no changes it suddenly started working again.

Anyone else come across this?

Any advice?

Mine often doesn't work when it should.  Then it'll then be fine at the next set of lights. No warning message though.

If you press CAR on the head unit, one of the options on screen shows the A in a circle (start stop logo) - press this and it shows you why it's not working, if it's ready and what the reason for the last start was.

Brilliant. I'll do it now and let you know what mine says. Thanks

Think it's just one of those things, it clearly decided there was a good reason not to work, I just let mine do its thing.

So, you were in Eco mode ie. not many revs being used, your headlights were on, reasonable amount of battery power being used and the petrol alternator wasn't generating enough ummmph. to keep the stop start working.  I really glad to know in the interest of fuel consumption the car won't turn itself off when it can't re-start itself, by the fact that a mile further down the road it could highlights to me it was a borderline issue.  This actual vindicates SUK decission not to fit heated screens to further vRS TSI's, I take it you used the screen this morning.

Just my take on it though.

T

I'd question the dealers IMHO, mine came up with a generic error message, and then a week later (this morning, funnily enough) it self destructed at the dealers.

Not doom saying, just saying ignorance isn't bliss unfortunately!

Nope - no heated screens this morning - only water on there so a quick wipe and I was off.

It does the same in Normal mode as Eco - i.e. doesn't work.

I can understand the messages about temp and gear engaged - but telling me power consumption is too high when it's not really using anything is complete nonsense (especially if the same system tells me it's not really using any additional power).

How the hell does it Blow up?  Worried now

It's the thread below, and don't let me worry you. My symptoms were different to yours. I was just using it as an example to tell you not to be afraid of bugging your dealer for answers!

Will give them a ring tomorrow..  Might be a simple "press this button" fix..

Can you permanently turn stop start off?

Yes  - there is a button to disable it.

Pretty sure pressing the stop start off button does it only the once and has to be pressed every time you drive the car to disable it. Could probably be coded out with VCDS but not sure why you would as it is actually quite a useful feature when working correctly.

I'd pay for the button to be coded the opposite way I.e start car the function is off and user turns it on if needed

Might the "high power consumption" be that the alternator is working hard to recharge the battery after a cold start, once that job is done, normal "stop-start" service would commence?

My Roomster doesn't have inbuilt stop-start, except yes it does, I switch the ignition off when stopped at traffic lights where I know there's likely to be a longish delay. And the headlights switch themselves off, sensibly.  On our new works Vauxhall Combo van, IF the stop-start works, it leaves the headlights ON.....poor battery methinks!

I know it doesn't work straight from cold start - but once the car is up to operating temp, it used to work.  Now it takes even longer to start.

maybe your battery is shafted as it will only turn off if its above a certain charge level?

Exactly. I was searching again and again in the options and couldn't believe we don't have a choice here.

Sometimes it just engages too early, i.e. waiting for somebody to get on and off your car or just pausing at a stop sign. So in all these case that I know I will be stationary for 15 seconds I press the button to turn it off...

Is yours manual or dsg? I ask as I know in the dsg cars the start/stop only functions when you press the brake pedal by a certain amount. So u can sit their forever as long as don't push it all the way down ?

Start/stop is a fairly complex function as already discussed previously in a few threads (i.e. here) so I'm not surprised at all when it behaves differently in similar situations. I'm sure it's working properly in your case as well.

Yes, it is a dsg. What you say makes sense, I have noticed that start/stop engages when I properly press the brake padal and stationary.

When it's lightly pressed the engine does not turn off, but also the car is struggling between being stationary and engaging the clutch...so in these cases I just manually turn off the start stop

Handbrake and park setting.......

Handbrake and park setting.......

Handbrake and P at every stop? Have a word. Not least when you go through reverse it scares the crap out of those behind you and makes it look like you don't know how to drive. DSG boxes are designed to be held on the footbrake as this disengages the gearbox (unlike the handbrake) when in D.

Why do you need the handbrake on when in park? Does the DSG not behave like a conventional automatic when in park?
