Oil Warning Light less 3,500 miles?

Featured Replies

I had the 1.4tsi in my other Octy and that burnt some oil during the first few thousand miles, but it settled down and oil consumption was minimal when I changed it 12 months later. This isn't meant to be unkind but many people never lift the bonet anymore as cars are so complicated so this is probably as much to do with your parents failing to do routine checks on the car than there being anything wrong- I wonder if he's not checked other things like the tyre pressures either? Obviously if the oil consumption remains high it needs to go back to the dealers to be checked out but I suspect theres actually nothing wrong with the car

Good luck

A new engine will burn some, as I said above, until the piston rings seat. But for the warning light to come on.... Hmm its low oil pressure that triggers that.... It would be very low by that time..... I wonder if it has a little leak somewhere.  Could be as easy as a filter not quite tight, could be a little leak from a gasket... Top it up, check it regularly, if it is still going down after 3500k then I'd speak to the dealer or look for a leak myself then speak to the dealer. Should be easy to spot and to fix if there is a leak.

Is this just an issue for the petrol engines or does it effect the diesels in the same way?

burning oil in a new engine can happen to any type of engine. my CR blackline gulped some during its first few thou too, but like my previous TSI has settled down now. on the other hand similar engines use none at all.... its a bit of a lottery and nothing to worry about unless it becomes excessive. Just get 4l of the correct oil from eurocar parts off ebay for under £30!

Diesels the same. Same piston rings that need to seat(wear to fit the bore) so same oil passing the ring and burning early on. Diesel may burn a bit less though by virtue of the thicker oil they run.

I have told the dealer that I will not buy any oil.  I buy new cars so that I don't need to bother with all that jazz.  I have never filled up between services even on rubbishy old motors.  I'll check it and if it needs any oil, they can fill it up...the dealer has agreed to this after telling me that I won't even need to use the bottle provided...then again, the same dealer and indeed the manufacturer did tell me that the car would be able to return almost 70mpg...you guessed it that was poppycock too...

To be fair, I think they told you under European test conditions the car will do 70mpg which, as we all know is something quite different.

Indeed!  Blood statistics.  Those same approved figures did tell me that I'd return 10 mpg more than my old C5 though...in truth it's actually over 10 mpg less.  Still, I like the car so all is good.

& how many miles did you have on C5 compared to the Skoda, loose diesel engine runs cheaper, you know that, your just after a moan arn't you.

LOL you know I'm pulling your leg, that part of the reason I went petrol, I'll be at full fuel efficiency in about 1k miles, your new oil burners will be ok at 10k but, not really getting their best till about 30k which by when I'll be getting a new one.

Not everything is so black'n'white when working out the 3 years running costs of cars but, 60mpg real world averages ain't happening from day one thats for sure.

Was he looking at the correct brochure LOL. Combined figure in the 1 I've got is 61 which also says the TSI is 45 and we all know how accurate that is!

The VRS does 72.4 mpg... Says it in the brochure so it must be true. If I get a tuning box that'll add 20% to those figures. It says that on web sites. Result! The tank isn't too small after all. Whey hey.

You're right manwithnkaim, I like to grumble. I got a degree in critical thinking with no work at all. Can't understand why...

It wouldn't be so bad if all in the real world you knew it was X% worse than the official figures but its not every car to car can be different. Compare two cars and they might have the same official figures but drive them in the real word and you could find 10mpg difference.

Naw, Elegance spec me so, there's only a about 10mpg difference & over 10k p.a. @ £1,800 list less with the DSG not be as smooth the oil burner was never gonna make it.

Makes sense. It was the higher residuals coupled with an overly generous discount on the diesel that swung it for me. It's a good car but had I realised how woeful it was going to be on diesel and therefore how little it'll save me I might have gone for petrol. Had I gone petrol, I'd have had DSG. It was great on petrol but just feels wrong with the diesel.

I too got the oil pouch as described earlier , containing 1 L of Castrol Edge Professional.

I check my oil level weekly, & after 3k plus miles there's only a gnats knacker amount used so far.

I went to Halfords to price it in case I need more in the future & was told the "Professional " version is trade only - the " normal" Edge was about £41.00 (!!) a 4 L can, so hope my car isn't going to use much oil !

Is the normal Edge oil OK to use in place of the "issued" Professional version ? I might need a mortgage if it's a heavy user !

Is there an alternative oil ? The handbook gives code numbers of recommended oils, none of which I saw in Halfords , or will other 5w-30w fully synthetic oils of a decent make do ?

Grateful for any thoughts /advice - thanks in advance.

Hmmmm. Residuals were only about £800 difference on the Elegance hence, I'd have had to of spent a grand more on fuel in 30k miles, i couldn't see that happening and with some stuff I've seen on here regards Ron99 giving better mpg, I'm even more sure, the residuals would have been way different on the VRS though so, you may have made the right choice in that spec.

BTW. I got 8.65% discount on the Elegance, how much did you get on the VRS TDI?

The first few thousands miles usage should be the heaviest so you've probably got plenty till your first service.  If you need anymore, either smile sweetly at your dealer whilst telling them how bewildered you are by the choice and ask them to put a drop in for you to make sure it's right...or take a look at a car on the forecourt paying particular attention to the little zipped pouch in the boot whilst wearing a large jacket.

Seriously, my dealer had no problems agreeing to top ups if required when I questioned oil consumption. Actually, the last dealer, when I bought my Citroën specifically asked me to go back to him rather than buy any as the wrong oil can cause all sorts of problems ..I never filled up between services though. The oil level barely moved.

I was offered about 4% on the elegance but around 7% on the VRS. The repayments were about the same.

Did someone say a 1.4TSI burning oil?

Anyone ever been to the Fabia II forum lately? :giggle:

Not the same engine.

Asda sell it a lot cheaper than Halfords. From time to time it is on offer when it's worth buying for future use.

Can't recall what I paid last time, but was a hell of a lot cheaper than dealers & Halfords.
