290k Octavia Replacement

Featured Replies

I am fairly new to this forum and i have had a 2006 Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI 140 from new, i am now looking to replace it as it has just clocked 289,000. I am heading down to my local dealer on Friday to test drive the new Spaceback 1.4 DSG and a 1.6 TDI 105 but I'm dubious as they look too small. I thinking of a 1.6 TDI Octavia Mk3 possibly in a similar spec to what I've got already.

Any ideas what sort of price i can expect to be paying for a 1.6 TDI Mk3 Octavia, i mean i know the book price but are dealers discounting at the moment. Plus has anyone gone from a 2.0 TDI 140 to a  1.6TDI, how have you found it? Im dubious as i love the performance of the 2.0 tdi.

I can see myself ending up with a 2.0 TDI vRS :-)

I used Carfile to negotiate 12% discount direct with dealer but this was before the 0% started as I ordered last March. I did get free servicing and £500 deposit contribution so all in about 16% off list, and there was no trade in to cloud the deal.

I think if you go for an elegance or se you should be looking at 7-8% discount with the current 0% deal, not sure what you would get off a vRS as the demand is high but I have heard some say that 5-6% was possible with the 0% so you should aim for at least 12% off imo.

Regarding performance, I have the 150CR Elegance and power to weight is almost identical to the 185CR vRS and it is more economical but the downside is the torsion beam rear suspension whereas vRS has independent rear susp so will handle better on the bends. Personally, I would avoid the 105CR 1.6 but I hear the new Greenline gets the higher output 1.6 and is a good choice but limited on options if you like bells and whistles. Obviously the vRS looks the business and has xenons and led rears as standard but does away with a few of the toys that are included on the Eleg, such as Amundsen, elec folding mirrors, cruise, high beam assist and colour maxi dot, but £ for £ you get what you pay for on each model just depends whether you want sporty or comfy!

Good luck and well done with your old hyper miler!

I would look at the new Greenline if your not going for the 2ltr 150 rather than the standard 1.6TDI, slightly more power and a six speed box.

I just got a call from carfile today after requesting a quote last night. He confirmed ALL Octavia's have 14% off list for cash buyers.

To take advantage of the 0% finance (2.9% on vRS) it drops to 5% off list - this you would need to talk to the dealer about directly for the details - carfile just intro you and the dealer will prop you for the finance.

Delivery is made in the Midlands, so if you are up there then it makes a lot of sense.

I am thinking of going for it despite being in Dorset as 14% is hard to argue with, and who doesn't want a decent drive home in their new car!?

I will just take out a 5 year low interest bank loan which would have similar repayments to PCP anyway, and then pay it back early at 3 years. I did the sums and the outstanding balance would be equal to the guaranteed value of the PCP anyway (I have a PCP quote from my local Skoda dealer). This is what the guy at carfile suggested many people do to take advantage of the higher cash deal discounts - I was dubious when he said it but having looked into it in more detail it does make sense.

I did very similar, I took a 5 year loan linked to mortgage and got 3.1% apr, so over 3 years I will only pay 4.7% of loan amount in interest charges, even if I keep it for full 5 years, it will have only cost 7.8% of loan amount in interest.

I also rang round my 3 nearest dealers and did a deal over the phone with one who price matched carfile, don't assume you have to order through carfile to get these discounts!

Given the amount of time you'll be spending it in, the small extra for a CR150 over a CR105 will be well worth it. If you work out the cost per hour it will be tiny.

A Greenline with the 110bhp engine and 6 speed gearbox might be worth a look, but you'll really notice the performance drop to a standard 5 speed 1.6.

The 2.0 150 power to weight point isnt entirely correct.

There is about 12hp/ton difference between the two so the 184 TDi vRS will be a bit quicker despite the fact it weighs in between late 1300kgs/early 1400kgs depending on variant (compared to mid/late 1200kgs of the 150). Point is the new 150 performs significantly more strongly than the 140hp mk2 models it replaced down to better more powerful engine and significantly reduced weight and isnt much slower than the vRS.

The one I test drive was every bit as fast if not faster than my mk2 170 CR vRS.

I understand the 105 and 110hp 1.6's are a vast improvement on the old units too. I bet a Greenline would be a great balance between reasonable performance, good equipment levels and extremely cheap running costs

I did say almost identical, it boils down to a difference of 0.1 secs on the official sprint from 0-62 mph. The 150CR does this in 8.2 secs, compared to 8.1 for the vRS. I think the old 170CR vRS was officially 8.4 secs so it is fair to say that the 150 CR is no slouch, just don't expect to throw it around on country lanes as the torsion beam will start beating like a drum!

Its a fair point but on paper the manual hatch breaks 62 in 8.5 secs and the estate in 8.6 if the brochure is to be believed.

I agree though the O3 150 TDi seems to be easily as quick and punchier as the Mk2 vRS TDi.

You can if it's a quattro ;):giggle:

Even on the raised ride height option

Skoda Website says 8.2 secs....

Yep, 4x4 gets the indep susp even with the lower power engines so they can fit in the haldex. My first Octy was a MkI 4x4 Hatch, great car!

What a cracking endorsement for Skoda reliability and quality, over a quarter of a million miles. You must be very fond of the old girl. Good luck finding a replacement and I hope it serves you as well, whatever you choose.

The original brochure said the same, then it was amended in later revisions.

God knows where Skoda get their figures from then as they seem to be different week on week.

Guess theyve amended the 150 TDi figures as the 184 TDi wouldnt have looked so attractive if the 150 was nigh on as quick.

Agree suspect low 8's is possible with a 150, lots of vRS TDi owners are seeing high 7's

The August brochure which includes the VRS says 8.5 for the CR150, the March 2013 which doesn't says 8.2.

As you say, they need to have a clear gap between the two to avoid the VRS looking pointless.

My car was ordered on launch weekend and built in April 2013 so I've obviously got one of the quick ones!

Spring horses are more powerful :)

Not long now Doc before you get your baby!

Indeed. Skoda CS phoned me earlier which I missed , so I should get my latest update on exactly where it's at.

I know, i have always looked after my cars and this old bus is an absolute gem to drive, it still drives like a dream now and i have every receipt from new. The other reason i need to get a new one as the box file that all the paperwork is in for the car is getting full.

wow, what a lot of information on this page to take in. I am slightly steering away from the Rapid as i tend to agree with themanwithnoaim  i just think its too small i have to received a brochure for the new Octavia and the Superb and now i really am in a pickle as by mistake i ordered a Superb brochure and i love the look of it especially as an estate car.

I paid just over £16k for my Skoda back in 2006 and now I'm looking at cars double that!

The green line (I'm assuming this is the 'eco' version) looks pretty good on paper but my OH has a Golf Bluemotion and she doesn't get anywhere near the MPG advertised so I'm dubious of 'eco' brands.

I like the look of the Octavia Estate SE 150 CR DSG, I came from a Tip tronic Passat before the Octavia and i loved auto but when buying the octvia last time the auto wasn't an option on the Ambiente as it was a limited edition with sport pack (looks a bit like a vRS but it is based on an Ambiente).

However for the same money i could get into a Superb S 1.6 TDI 105...... looks like friday is going to be full of hard decisions.

And finally if i had my way, id just stop being sensible and get the vRS ! but my fuel bill would be out of this world.

I had a Superb II before the Octy III and there is no doubt it was a great car. Just be aware that the facelift is only cosmetic so the architecture and technology dates back to 2008, even the audio kit is still the 2008 stuff so if you plan to keep the car for another 290k miles, bear in mind the Octy III was a new platform last year with new engines and technology, so for example the infotainment fully integrates the audio and driver info systems and the engines are more refined and economical. On build quality, the Superb probably still just edges the win over the Octy in my opinion but I would still choose the Octy at the moment as it has many more pros than cons, we'll have to wait until late 2015 for a completely new Superb, now that will be on my shopping list when it comes to choosing my next car!
