And for our younger readers, what was the best 90s hot hatch?

Featured Replies

As well as the leftovers from the 80s, the next decade brought us quick Clios, more Golfs and lots of other cars I've probably forgotten. As before, which is best?

Once we have a list of suggestions I'll add a poll.

One for the road rally fans proton gti. Owned one for 8 years great car to drive spot on handling and feel of the car. Yes not the quickest but must be one of the quirkiest looking cars.

Other than that escort cosworth

Mentioned in the previous thread but it has to be the Renault Clio 16v. I was allowed a weekend away in my mother's brand new M-reg. Phenomenal car (Avon and Somerset thought so too the amount of times I was tugged). To be honest its the only real 90s hot hatch I can think of barring the idiotic turbo Fiesta.

Stand corrected, Peugeot still knew how to build a car in the 90s. Never drove a GTI 306 but my boggo 1.9d handled sublimely- I can only imagine what the 106 was like.

The only 306s I drove were diesel with a blue light on the top. One was, to be fair to it, a knackered old shed without a turbo, but the new good one was a real treat to drive. I'm sure the GTI was great fun.

106 gti's were good too. Same as your saxo vts but less chav

Aha! The 90's. Where car manufacturing approached it's 00's zenith.

Some of my favourite 90's hatches:

Clio Williams

Civic Type-R (the first one)

Integra Type-R (the first one - yes it's got a hatch back)

Pug 306 GTi6 (the last good Peugeot ever made)

Ford Puma Racing (though the standard 1.7 vct would work too)

Alfa 145 Cloverleaf :D

Nope. There's a "best 90s penis substitute" thread for that kind of thing.

May not be the fastest, but it's fantastic around town and moves like a go kart. Plus, modifying is like playing with lego - snap on and off with no grief!

There was nothing wrong with the Saxo at first. It was only once the prices started to drop they all migrated to a McDonalds car park.

Honda civic 1.6 vti......hmm that engine!  Even better is the Honda integra type r.

Wah? Its still quick today!

When it come's to the 80s im all there but the 90s.....well thats when i started to chase the fairer sex so talking about a" great ride" in the 90s means something completely different to me.!

Lancia Delta Integrale. Preferably in Evo2 form. Yum.

Only one for me

Unless it's in vr6 form, the mk3 GTi's were pretty asthmatic. IIRC even the quick ones were only just sub 9 secs to 60.

Just re-read it, overly touchy Mk2 owner

Maybe one of these...HondaCRX1-1.jpg

My old man had a Polo breadvan that overheated and blew up once. That was pretty hot
