And for our younger readers, what was the best 90s hot hatch?

Featured Replies

Just re-read it, overly touchy Mk2 owner

Ah, you have a proper one then :)

Original Leon Cupra can be had on a 99 plate. Corrado vr6?

In no particular order

Fiat Tipo Sedicivavole (2.0 16v 148Bhp engine from the lancia integrale minus the turbo)

Renault 19 16v (same engine as clio)

Seat Ibiza Cupra from '99 sneaks in(156 bhp 1.8t?)

as does the mythical beast that was the 2.0 fabia

So the Clio Williams

Cant believe no one has mentioned this one. Reliable, quick, easily the BEST handling car in its class if not of the whole 90s..

Not guessed it yet?

Primera GT.

I had a drive in a 16V Renault 19, much preferred the drive back in a 3 litre Peugeot 605 SVE.  It's got to be the Escort Cosworth and it's got the added bonus of being Sierra based.

Is it true they were heavier than the Sierra version?

Theres also the pulsar and almera GTI :)

Primera GT.

Is it not a saloon?

Wouldn't really class it as a hot hatch.

Hot hatch imo is a 3 door sardine tin

From what I can find out the Escort came in at 1275Kg, compared to the 4 wheel drive Sierra Cosworth at 1302Kg, however (this may be what you've heard) the 2 wheel drive Sierra Cosworth was 1250Kg.

Wah? Its still quick today!

Your Mk2 GTI 16V will be (never had one, but I had a Jetta GTI 16v). The valvers are a great car, and the only Golf I'd look twice at.

Mk2 and 3 GTI 8V's were pretty uninspiring. I owned both and went back to a Polo or a Mk2 Rocco both times for the fun factor.

The Mk3 16V was quick, but not a patch on it's predecessor for bringing a smile to your face.

Primers Sri the non cat version was the better one from what I can remember.

Pulsar gtir was a weapon but unreliable.

Mazda 323 familia 4x4 I'm sure is early 90's

Hatch. Was available in a saloon also.

Golf gti classed as a hot hatch, primera had 150bhp just like the golf. And yes, were classed as a hot hatch

Wasn't there a 323 turbo? Not sure if that was the 4x4 as well but would be epic.

306 gti6 / rallye

That's the one it's 4x4 as well

Honda Civic Type R for me because of the engine but the offer me one or a Clio Williams and it would be a very hard decision!

One that has not been mentioned yet is the early 1990s Astra GTE. It did not handle but with the 150bhp engine it was pretty rapid.

I had the 1995 SE version - lower tune (125 bhp) version of the GT engine, full leather, full electrics, spoilers, a/c etc.  One of the best handling cars I have ever driven, the speeds it would do on long sweeping corners and sets of bends one after another beggared belief.  Inspired total confidence, fluid handling, excellent roadholding (and all on 14" tyres, which were dirt cheap meaning that you could get a full set of top quality ones for less than £200.  The GT versions must have been unbelievable.  Fantastic car.

Sierra XR4x4 (available up to '93) was a great car too.  Highly underrated (despite being far, far better than the terrible XR2i and the even worse mark 4 XR3i).

Escort Cossie was a bit too in your face for me.  I preferred the more subtle Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4, preferably in a nice metallic shade.

Mark 5 Escort RS2000 and XR3i 130bhp weren't bad motors (unlike the standard versions).  The RS and XR were certainly far better than the garbage mark 3 Golf, the GTI 2.0 version of which couldn't even break the ten second barrier to sixty...

I did like my Fords in the '90s, as you can probably tell.  I don't buy them now though, as I had so many that were utter crap, sadly.

Peugeot 205 D turbo - the first diesel "warm" hatch (along with the Golf GTD).  There was also the (rather unfortunately named) 205 STDT, a D turbo engine in a GTi bodyshell but with better looking alloys and silver bumper inserts rather than red.

Don't know if it was still available in the '90s, but if so, honourable mention goes to the Skoda Rapid coupe.  Great styling, individual, great value and handling reminiscent of a "widow maker" 911.

Oops, forgot the VW Corrado VR6 (preferably in 1993 last of the line Storm guise).  I know it's a coupe, but there's a mark 2 Golf under there somewhere and the back has a hatchback, so it sort of counts.

My old 205 1.9 GTI, super fast but poor quality inside the car.

I have a Sapph Cossie 4x4 on a K plate and do like the understated looks (but its not a hatch !!!) compared to the Escos but a well sorted Escos was the best affordable hot hatch of the 90's and so easily modded to 350 bhp which made it a weapon but more importantly a reliable weapon.

Integrale's are awesome as well but break very very easily and cost a fortune when they do !

So its got to be the Escort Cossie
