Driving's good but cycling is better !

Featured Replies

Guys, So how do you guys transport your bikes when on a drive n ride ?

I have ordered the pre-fitted tow bar and will buy the standard 2-bike carrier from Skoda accessories. Any problems with this? Idea is that in a hatch bike will have to go outside when going on holiday to accommodate the family - because I have to take them along as well. Also I used to use option B) with the old car but don't think that will work with the Octav due to it's massive boot door,.

A) In the boot

B) Using a bike carrier on the boot

C) Using a bike carrier on a tow bar

D) On the roof

Thanks for your comments - I salute with my face cheeks in your general direction   :moon:

In the boot.

I'll be chucking mine in the boot - its one reason why I wanted a larger car.

I've always been a keen cyclist and since buying my first Octavia in 2000, I've never had to put the bike(s) anywhere else but inside the boot. We even manage to get four (4) adults, one bike and associated luggage for a two week holiday in the alps every summer. That was in a hatchback, we have the combi now, so even more space.

I often see people turn up at trail centres with estates (single occupancy) and have a bike on the roof or tow bar, I don't get it.

Got to be in the boot, as although the bike carriers are good, I don't like the thought of the all pressure from wind (and wind direction) multiplied by speed being on the wheels.

Mine will be in the boot most of the time especially on short drives and when single. Only issues is with holidays as I would think the hatch is too small to take the bike plus the rest of the gear.

Obviously I can't comment on what you take on holiday, you might have different needs. People might be wondering how I manage to get 4 adults plus bike plus luggage for 2 weeks in my boot. I'll let you into a secret - don't use suitcases :)

Seriously, we stopped a few years ago (unless flying obviously), now we just use vacuum bags, they're amazing.

PS, this is what I'm talking about.

Makes short work of fleeces, towels and almost every thing else. Surprisingly, creases aren't a problem, though the bag crushes down, it actually seems to lessen the crease problem.

Sounds like efficiency should be your middle name. Do you use vacuum bags on the way back as well?, sounds like something we should try.

Yes we do, we always stay in rented cottages or chalets these days, much more civilised than either hotels or B&Bs and there's always a vacuum cleaner around.

Even better, the vacuum bags are really cheap.

I managed to take my racing bike in the boot of my Golf , OK strip off the wheels , pedals , seatpin and saddle then it just lays in the bottom of the boot. I then pack the luggage around the bike (again Not suitcases) and lay the wheels on top.

Got sick if transporting my mountain bike in the back of my mini wheels off seat off and front seat pushed fully forward so i could get it in

I got thule roof bars and bike carriers so I could carry more than one bike

When I only need to transport one bike I will chuck it in the boot

I will be using them for my vrs estate when I get it in March just need to buy a new foot pack for about £70

Looked into a tow bar and rack but the extra cost was to high for me

Car lives out front, bike lives in garage ready for sunny days...

Oh.... you're talking about pedal bikes.... thought you meant proper bikes (i.e the ones with big motors slung under them).

Depends what type of biking you do......

as an MTBer, towbar rack FTW every time!

In the boot - slowly scuffs and marks the interior, have to take wheels off (faff and risk of disc brake issues if lever pulled with nowt between pads)

On the roof - quick, easy, wrecks economy.

On the Towbar - quick, easy, good on fuel, keeps muck off and out of car, leaves roof free for roofboxes, canoes, etc

My tuppence,

Niall

Would your bike work inside a vacuum bag?
