How long does it take before your new car is just a car again

Featured Replies

How long is the period from the time you get your new car until you no longer worry about where you park it?

In France knocks are par for the course and there's no way of preventing that.

in fact, it's not a real car until it's been dented at least once !!

I would say about 6 months is good.

Must admit it's a lot less stressful when we are past that period.

Personally speaking about 2 weeks, then its just a car

Most people would probably say until the next reg plate comes out.?

For me it was when a lorry tried to push it sideways down the m6.

Although normally probably a month or so ?

Yep, I think it takes the shine off it when it's no longer the "new" number plate.

That or when it stops smelling like a new car.

To me its just a normal car from day one,imy time and effort goes onto my rs1600i escort and my 63 mk1 cortina gt show cars, having said that though,i wont take it on tip runs park it miles away from other cars at asda, though I usually come back to it and there would be the biggest pile of scrap parked next to it about 3" from the door handle,

The 'honeymoon phase' is not just applicable to the fairer sex, it can also be applied to anything new and shiny, and the duration of the honeymoon period is usually directly proportional to how 1. expensive and 2. shiny an object is. Therefore cars are usually at the top, being both expensive and shiny.

You know the honeymoon phase is over when it gets dirty and you don't care anymore.

This is also applicable to cars  :giggle:

I'm going against the general flow in this thread I think! All my new Skodas have felt fresh and 'new' right till the day I exchange them. I'm just as careful and worry about supermarket door 'prangers' right up to the last day with the car.

I've had my car for almost 2 months now, still definitely feels new to me.

Hahah this is so true for France, I've been several times in Paris and i have deliberately looked out for a car on the street that is not dented or scratched :)

Otherwise for me the new car feels new and I am happy with it until I sell it. But it's just a car after the first few weeks

However when I am in a hurry (i.e. most of the time) I park where I find a spot and drive less careful. Careful driving mostly for the first 1000-1500km

I've never owned "new new" so have planned for the car to be "new" for the duration of the PCP! Given the next car in the fleet is 2002, and the ones after that are 1984, 83, 82, 82 respectively!

One careful owner, like it. Should boost your resale price.

My current ST is three and a half years old and I still park it miles away from anyone else. It has one tiny dink on the passenger door and that's it. I'll be doing the same with my vRS as well.

My vRS is 4 in April and I'm afraid I'm still over protective!

Sarge.

Yep as above, I always park away from anyone else (and find that of all the places unoccupied when I get back, usually its not the ones either side of me) !

I am very paranoid about leaving it anywere, I think that started as soon as I got to the stage I could afford something nice.

mine was after a week once the "thing" had been in and my  6 year old on a day out..........

foot prints all over back of front seat......chocolate on seats................slobber hanging from roof and white dog hairs every where,,,,,,but hey ho its just a car.

I said 6 months but thinking about it I will be lucky to get past a month, but hoping for good blast for the holidays.

Most likely will lose interest the first time my 3 year old pukes in the back. Truly christened.

Hope not opting for leather seats was not a mistake  :@

I'm not there yet. Car is ten years old in June.

Ha - bet he's a handful when he does a Usain Bolt.

Mines two and a half months old and I park it anywhere in a car park so I guess it ain't new new to me anymore.

Its normally around 6 weeks for me to lose the new car thrill, trouble is I normally get an itch to trade my cars in for new ones just before they run out of warranty and need an mot. Has cost me a fortune over the years and im not even a car fanatic.

For me, it's just a car when you give up trying to clean the brake dust crud off the alloys. So far a weekly wash n wax including groping inside the rims of the 5 spoke Golus alloys has done the trick, but due to a recent illness, it has been neglected for a whole month so I spent over 2 hours the other day cleaning the wheels, even removed the fronts from the car to attack them with a clay bar and fresh rim wax, fortunately they still came up like new so with over 14k miles covered in 9 months, the honeymoon continues!

That's the beauty of black or anthracite alloys, they require much less cleaning. For me a new car feels new for about a year, after when I will park it anywhere, stop counting the scratches, and give it less baths.

Opel Ascona 3.2V6 (omega block)

MK2 Yellow Cav GL (C20GET pontiac block)

Sorry last one should have read 72 not 82 (Manta A)

Also an 83 cav I rescued for £100. Oh and a Portuguese Chevrolet Monza!

From your name though.. I have a really soft spot for 70/80s escorts / cortinas from my Grandad who loved them. For me it was opel as when my mum died I was just ten, and I got her Jamaica Yellow cav GL!
